  1. @ circuit, No I never did get it joined to the domain. I'm sure it works with encrypted wifi I don't see why it wouldn't. I had mine hard wired. My opinion on the product is this is a nice NAS for linux guru's. The web gui configuration is in a linux friendly format if that makes since. It lacked a few options that I thought it should of had. Support for the product is hard to find. After buying the product and trying to get it to setup like I wanted, it really would have been better to build a FreeNAS box or go with another alternative. On a scale of 1-10 I'd give it about a 5.
  2. Agreed. There should be specifics though. Say each tutorial should be video recorded if possible, with audio or txt based instructions and a typed version/notes. Then, not only would we have to wait once a week to get our technolust, there would be new things to learn all the time. I'm sure Darren and the crew would even be interested in some of the tutorials with the mass variety of topic's discussed here.
  3. I just had an idea and figured I'd post while it was fresh. There are an unlimited number of brilliant minds on hak5. hak5 is always giving away some nice swag for trivia, contests, etc. I just had a thought, that with all the brilliant minds out there in a variety of area's that us "hacker's" enjoy, why not people just start posting tutorials on what they enjoy doing? Have a separate section in the forums just for tutorials and break it into sub-categories. Just a thought. The one with the most views at the end of the month, etc. or whatever time period could win some hak5 swag.
  4. This sounds interesting. Kinda makes me wanna play with this. Speaking of the topic and Google Voice. A friend of mine did something with his cell Android phone where he can make free calls using google voice and receive calls for free as long as he had data or wifi enabled on the phone. I forget all the steps I set it up also, but have since forgotten everything I've done. I may contact him again and get the steps and post it, because I'm curious if there was a simpler way and other's may be interested. Anyway, back to the point I believe it was maybe a year or 2 ago when Matt was on the show, he did a series on VoIP and covered a windows based platform solution. I believe it was 3CX? http://www.3cx.com/VOIP/softphone.html I'm to lazy to look for sure atm, but just thought I'd throw that out there.
  5. I figured it out. After hours of frustration, but now I am documenting everything. As far as the fix for anyone interested I should have tried to connect after each change I made, but it was either... 1. Symantec Endpoint Protection in the Network and Sharing Center -> Network Connections -> Advanced -> Advanced Settings -> Provider Order tab and what I did was arrow up the Microsoft Windows Network to be first in line. Prior it was set for Symantec SNAC network provider order. or 2. A Network policy (after the many many many that I've created and modified) that the only difference is in the Conditions I added authentication type MS-CHAP v1 & v2, v1,v2 CPW and EAP and the only Constraint I added was Microsoft Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2).
  6. I actually saw this link while searching that night and tried everything as listed here to no success, I just forgot to mention it. I was just so frustrated. NPS is a pain!
  7. About to seriously pull out hair that I don't have! I've been working on this for the past hour and a half looking at YouTube how-to's trainsignal vid's, etc. For some weird reason even I'm testing locally right now once I get it working locally I'm sure it will work remotely. I've created my polices with NPS, removed polices, created new one's, modified policies, registered NPS with AD. As far as the user accounts go I've set to Allow dial in access and I've tried even setting to control access through NPS. I've unticked the box in the policy to ignore user's dial in properties, so it should work right? Wrong. This has got me pretty frustrated, because working with NPS seems easy and looking at the log file I wasn't able to make much sense of any error's there. However I did see in the event viewer in the network policy access events that "user account USER connected on port PORT, but does not have remote access privileges. I don't understand how that is if I have granted access to the user account? The funny thing is the default Admin account connects just fine. Looking at and comparing the user attributes to a second admin account I've created the only difference is a few groups that the secondary account does not belong to. My goal is to create a working PPTP VPN connection and Radius authentication for wireless. Neither are working. As far as Radius goes every vid and learning module I've watched always used certificate services and joined the machines to the domain. Can this be done without using certificates and joining the pc to the domain?
  8. No, no one else has access to the servers. It is a bit weird, once I got everything back up and running when the cold temps came I started getting weird error messages when I tried to open AD User's and Computer's and anything related to AD. I'm still learning AD also, so it could have been some change I made and wasn't to sure what I was doing. I did actually just wipe everything and re-install a few nights ago so far so good.
  9. Hmmm, maybe should have worded what I'm looking for a little different, though those are all great monitoring solutions, what I'm looking for is basically something that will tell me how much data has been used per day, week, month, etc. e.g. my ISP has a monthly bandwidth limit of 250GB, so I'm wanting a solution to monitor how much traffic has been used.
  10. I know this has been asked quite a bit, but in case there is something recent and better that I don't know about I'll ask again. I'm looking for something that could sit at the router or really anywhere on the network, but keep track of all data incoming and outgoing data on the network not just 1 box. Is there maybe a linux distro of some sort, maybe something I can throw in a VM and have it monitor all data in and out of the network, but only calculate usage. Not concerned about certain types of traffic as much as I am about usage. I have DD-WRT running on an old wrt54gs, but I've heard the bandwidth monitor in that distro wasn't too reliable. Thanks in advance.
  11. @ Infiltrator, Thanks for the link. That's exactly the error and issue. Just funny, because I'm not using this server for DHCP at all, but I'll dig a little deeper tonight. However I did last night give one last test before I went to sleep. The nic light does remain lit, I captured a few packet's while starting and stopping RRAS while also doing a continuous ping from another box on the lan, but haven't looked at the capture file yet. @ digip, I couldn't agree with you more and that is probably what I will do, because I noticed a few other funky things such as in the active directory users and computers console alot of my user accounts are missing. I can still add them to groups and so forth by the "check names" button after typing the username, but their not visible. I just got this urge to "figure it out" for future references. Also Yes I'm getting in the habit of documenting everything.
  12. I'm not too familiar with ISA, I've never messed with that before. How can I tell if that is running? I've set this up before, but not messing with it for about a year I'm rusty. I'll check if the nic light goes out, however as soon as I start the service "something" gets assigned an APIPA address, but the server itself is static. It is setup as a domain controller and all and I can talk to it just fine until I start RRAS. Then pings time out and everything. Soon as I stop RRAS I can talk to it again. I did notice some default policies were set to deny access, but I even set all polices to enable access and disabled all policies except for the default VPN policy. I just installed wireshark also. I'll take a look tomorrow at what happens when I enable and disable RRAS, hopefully that will help too. The only thing I have to go off as far as the event viewer is once the RRAS service is started it spits out the error's "Unable to contact a DHCP server..." I have even set a DHCP Relay agent to the box running Untangle which is what is providing DHCP so I'm a bit stuck. Thanks for the prompt reply buddy.
  13. Having a bit of a problem with RRAS and server 2k8R2. The server itself is in the garage and I set up RRAS last year I believe and can only run the server in the winter time. (no A/C in the garage) I can't remember exactly how I configured it. The issue now is I'm trying to setup radius for my wireless connections and vpn connections. However when I start the RRAS service it kills the network access. I can't ping the server or nothing. I'm thinking it may be something with NPS, but it's been so long ago when I set it up originally just for VPN connections due the summer/fall temps we've had. The server is not assigning IP's I have Untangle running on another box the does DHCP. Is this a policy setting I'm overlooking?
  14. After seeing the latest episode of the show I've been waiting on something like this since '08 After trying a few other solutions such as Jinzora, this one seems perfect and much better support for all that non-programmer's out there using the app. Curious to know if anyone has any idea's how I could force authentication on the server? It appears to only work with Plex Media Server, but am wondering if there is a way to setup some form of authentication/login to view remotely. I looked at trying to implement a way to access it via Adito OpenVPN-als, but it seems as if the media center needs to actually be installed on each machine or device viewing the content. I'd like to do this without using the myplex account if possible.
  15. I think you may be able to do this with Adito OpenVPN-als http://lars.werner.no/?page_id=153 You can create SSL Tunnels and you can install the Putty SSH extension from the extension manager which may allow you to do what your wanting.
  16. Didn't know if you saw this and if it might help you. http://www.irongeek.com/i.php?page=videos/universal-plug-and-play-upnp-1
  17. I see. Guess I misunderstood a bit. I didn't even realize you were trying to port forward via UPnP. I've not actually tried that before.
  18. What model router are you using? Also I had a similar issue along time ago with Adito and I think I ended up adding 0.0.0.0 to the list of addresses to listen on and for whatever reason that seem to have got things working. So you don't possibly have remote management turned on in your router which by default is usually port 8080?
  19. Thanks alot for the feedback guys. My friend actually had to re-do the whole document, but it turned out not being that bad. I think I'm going to try to figure out a way to create a file/script if not handy utility already exists that will auto-sync, save her documents when she is done or on the fly of possible. I must say the autorecover feature in ver. I believe '07 and up has come in handy many times for me, but I don't use the office suite much.
  20. What error do you get when attempting to connect externally. Also does it work externally just using https? It sounds like maybe you might have another device on the network with port 8080 opened along with a port forward rule as well. Another good test to make sure it's reachable would be to use nmap externally and make sure that 8080 does show open.
  21. Hi guys, I have a friend who was working on a word document off of a USB stick and the only copy of the file is on the USB stick. She has lost the usb stick, but I'm wondering is there a way to retrieve the file from a temporary place on the pc? The pc is company issued running win7 with the 2003 Office suite. If I remember right, the office suite 2007 or 2010 autosaves a copy of everyting in the event the document was closed unexpectedly, but being that she was working off of a USB stick I wasn't sure if the file was still retrievable. Thanks.
  22. I actually just found a nice app called BgInfo. Works perfect.
  23. This may be a dumb question to most, but is it an app or a setting in windows OS or is it active desktop that lists the IP, hostname, domain, etc. in the upper right corner?
  24. Just figured I'd post back as I found a compatiable HDMI video card. Went to my local electronic's store and they JUST got these in today. It's a NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS PCI Card. 512MB DDR3. I installed it, but haven't booted the machine just yet as the heat is still a bit to hott. Now if this works, being that the server had no audio at all prior, this should pass audio and video directly from the card itself?
  25. I use OpenVPN myself via Untanle. I love how easy and seamless that is to setup and connect. However installing OpenVPN on a box alone I've never gotten it to work. Also I would need more then 2 simultaneous connections at a time. I'm surprised there's not an app available for this. I checked portableapps.com with no luck did a little googling. I'm shocked actually. The goal here is to make life easy on the client side, have then execute an app, maybe type in a username and pass and click connect. Without having them setup the connection manually.
