  1. I am finally starting to assemble my rack and hopefully start a business. I have two PowerEdge servers and am looking for something I'm not sure exactly what it's called. I'm looking for a rack mountable storage enclosure that I can add hot swappable sata drives. I've seen them before just don't know exactly if theres a specific "term" or name for them. The one's I've seen were for scsi disks, I'd like to have one for sata disks. I don't want to go into to much detail, but for all the 1337 admins out there what "primary" server and enterprise grade router/switch would you recommend to one as far as running a business from home? Currently I have a PowerEdge 2500 and 2600. I'm a bit buzzed and thinking/dreaming out loud... giggity
  2. ahhh, I didnt even think about using linux. About the touchscreen the phone has a passcode (of course) and a saved access point it wont even automatically connect to it no more. Ill try Ubuntu. Thanks
  3. I haven't posted yet in any iPhone forums, figured I'd ask here first. I have a 3G that recently no longer responds to "touch". I'm with Sprint now and have an Evo, but on this 3G there are video's and photo's on the disk I'm curious if there is anyway I can retrieve? It's running 4.0 firmware, but pluggin it into the pc is about as far as I can access anything as the screen or calibration is out. It's not jailbroken "wish it was" and I have tried with EASEUS to see if it saw the partition, but it didn't even see it.
  4. Got it figured out guys. I was getting and error indicated in this link and resolved it with the solution provided: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library...593(WS.10).aspx I then had to add permissions to the installation directories as mentioned by Infiltrator. I was using Putty and Tunnlier as the clients. With putty I log in just by typing the username. With Tunnlier I had to type DOMAIN\USER. I was using winSSHd, but had to switch back to copSSHd, because winSSHd personal use license doesn't support domains.
  5. Hmmm, well I'm running enterprise edition as a DC I'll check the permission settings on the directory's. All user's whom is going to be using ssh does have access to cmd.exe and they are all local user's. I haven't tried SFTP yet I'll give that a go too then I'll definitely post back results.
  6. Will definitely do. I tried WinSSHd and still the same thing. Access denied so I'm positive now it is a permission setting somewhere in 2k3.
  7. @ Infiltrator, Yea I can definitely ping the DC VM I also use it as a VPN Tunnel. As far as I know the correct permissions are set for the ssh server. Using copssh it said once I activated each user that it can now access the ssh server. I have not generated certificates yet for it. I may try that. @ Bit Hunter, Yea as soon as I posted this thread I discovered winSSHd. It was my first time hearing about that one and I installed it in an XP VM and it worked just fine. So I think I'm gonna try it now in the 2k3 DC VM.
  8. Having major problems trying to get any SSH Server working in 2k3. I've tried OpenSSH, FreeSSHd and copSSH currently. OpenSSH I tried using the following config from this thread: http://www.hak5.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7118&hl= I had that working along time ago on XP just fine. When I tried in this 2k3 VM executing the following 2 lines mkgroup -l > ..etcgroup mkpasswd -l > ..etcpasswd it just hung in the prompt and done nothing. So I tried freeSSHd which I actually like, but everytime I went to connect using Putty, putty just came to a hault and freeSSHd would crash in the VM. Now with copSSH I used this link to install http://blogs.windowsnetworking.com/wnadmin...3-using-copssh/ but no matter what every user I activate when trying to connect using putty I get access denied. What have you guys used and recommend for ssh tunneling in 2k3?
  9. I have the WVC54GCA. It works great I just wish it was at least 1MP resolution. For some reason though I could never get it to record anything using the web interface. The other utility app kept crashing on win7 64-bit and I just really haven't messed with it since I mainly just use it to view live stream.
  10. I have one of the linksys cams suggested by Infiltrator and I must say it works well. Live streaming and viewing via my iphone and all. I would recommend you get all network camera's instead of USB and assign each camera it's own unique port. I been thinking about trying USB though. Grabbing a few HD web cams and they now make USB over Cat5/6 extender's so I can route them through the home nicely.

    Home Proxy

Hey guys, trying to setup a proxy server for a few friends to use from remote locations. I have heard of Squid, but this will be running in a VM so I'm looking for a setup that will require the least amount of configuration for the user's. I'm gonna try this, but am curious if it will work for their needs. http://www.webstuffscan.com/2006/12/21/acc...server-at-home/ The town they live in has free wifi access throughout the town and some sites the frequent are blocked for whatever reason. I thought about letting them SSH or VPN, but I want it to be as simple as can be for them to use such as "just point and click". Am open to suggestions. Thanks.
  12. My whole purpose is for learning experience. I'm doing a course over server 2k3, AD, VPN's and all that, but I believe in their scenario's their using enterprise equipment. I do use PPTP and SSH tunnel which is nice, I just wanted to step it up a notch and get a little dirty with L2TP. I'll set this up again with one of my wrt54gs and post back if I get it working. Just a thought, I remember reading a thread here something about a virtual router I believe? Is there a way I could say run say a cisco IOS? via a VM and L2TP to that? I have no current experience with cisco router's or switches, but have been looking for a good affordable once that supports the cisco VPN client and GB LAN. @ Infiltrator, I've yet to see a good working tutorial where anyone has managed to get OpenVPN working. I believe Sparda attempted sometime ago I saw a post and asked him if he got it working and I think he said he was still having issues's. Another member said at one point he would write a tutorial and I PM'ed him to see if he still planned to do so, but he is a very busy person and I'm sure just don't have the time. I do use Adito OpenVPN-als. have been since the mention of it the show and love it. It's a bit to easy though. I like a challenge and would like to setup the version from here: http://openvpn.net/
  13. I've seen that link before last time I was trying to mess with this I tried that ProhibitIPSec reg edit and was not successful. I think it's like you said though it might not work over the WAN with my equitment. I'm going to use my wrt54gs again and give that a shot, because I thought I had it working that way. Unless anyone knows of another way to establish a good secure L2TP connection to home. I like DD-WRT and use the built in PPTP server, would be nice if there was a firmware or way to do the same with L2TP.
  14. Ok this brings me to a hault. I thought when setting up L2TP IPSec was part of it. I didn't know I could setup a L2TP connection without IPSec. I guess the Train Signal Lab I'm watching is a bit confusing. That being said I'm not sure if I'm using IPSec. In the connection on the client (windows 7) I have it set on L2TP with IPSec so I thought L2TP and IPSec were the same thing? As far as IPSec I see a policy setting in the DC Security Policy and the Domain Security Policy if that's what (IPSec) is. I'm not sure how exactly to configure that part as the Virtual Instructor has not covered that. Forgive me for my lack of knowledge. I could have swore I had this working over the WAN about 2 years ago with a wrt54gs using CA. :(
  15. Hopefully someone can let me know if I'm doing something wrong here. I have a VM running 2k3 with RRAS I have setup a PPTP and L2TP VPN. I'm able to connect to the PPTP VPN connection fine, but the L2TP everytime I get error 789. So far none of the MS knowledge base articles have seem to help. As for the L2TP VPN I have set a pre-shared key for the connection with a basic policy. After I establish a connection this way I'll configure CA. I have gotten this to work before a long time ago, but I'm wondering if it might be an issue with the router's I have. My configuration is Modem --> Linksys RVS4000 --> Netgear WNR1000v2 acting as a switch. I have TCP/UDP 1701 forwarded all the way to the VM, now I'm not sure what else to do. I believe the last time I had this working I was using a wrt54gs. I am able to connect via locally just not over WAN.
  16. I am also looking at doing this hopefully this year. I asked about this last year and got quite a bit of useful info. There are a few good links in the thread I started here: http://www.hak5.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=12361&hl= Let me know how it goes. I'd be very interested in your setup.
  17. Just a thought after watching ep 7x09. Couldn't you take the webcam out of a lap-top and mount it to your helmet? I've never tried, but have an HP Tablet with a built in webcam I'm going to toy with as a security camera with some motion capturing software. Just a thought, it would be an interesting homebrew mod.
  18. Yes, I'm aware of configuring file sharing and user permission's with windows, it just freaked me out being new to windows 7 only for a couple days to see file's were shared I didn't know about. Apparently when joining a wireless/wired network it prompts you what file's and folder's you want to share with HomeGroup and if you leave the defaults checked it will basically share your entire "User's" folder. Basically everything except root.
  19. Yea that's what I figured after searching online and seeing how the PC version of Kindle worked.
  20. Sorry for all the posts on this same topic, I kept getting a Bad Request error in FF when I tried to post, then I decided to try in IE and seen it did actually post the thread. I didn't see any way to delete the duplicate topics. Sorry.
  21. I have a friend who is using Kindle for PC to read books and he was wondering if there is a way instead of downloading books to his kindle account or buying a hard copy, if he can download/buy books via PDF format online? I searched for a bit and wasn't really able to find anything useful so figured I'd ask here, because I remember the episode over the kindle console.
  22. Thanks. After posting to this thread I did check out the pfsense site and saw it had all those feature's. I've heard of pfsense before, but never new it was this powerful. I'm definitely going to be implementing that asap.
  23. I'm liking what you've done with your HP. I have 2 Dell PowerEdge Servers one 2500 and a 2600. Looking to do something similar with the 2500. What captive portal are you running and how do you have it setup? This would make a nice segment also I think. Thanks in advance.
  24. I do like that Asus laptop alot. It does just about fit my needs and I like the good battery life and 13.3" display. I'll keep this one in mind, hoping to find something just a bit more powerful though.
  25. Thanks guys, I was looking at alienware also. I know those are the way to go for gaming, but I'm not a gamer. Still I'm sure anything alienware will suit my needs. I personally like the D830, mostly because it has pretty much everything integrated, bluetooth, pcmcia and expresscard. The cd/dvd drive pops out and I have a second battery that pops in it's place. Good battery life is definitely something I'll need.
