  1. well first thing's first, you more than likely have a network card installed in the PC and Linux has a ridiculous amount of driver support for said hardware. I assume you know how to open a konsole window, so open one up and type sudo ifconfig eth0 up this is essentially the same thing as ipconfig /renew in windows sudo ifconfig eth0 down = ipconfig /release Here's the breakdown so you can play with it and understand a little better sudo = super user do, lets you run administrative commands without being logged in as root ifconfig = interface configuation command (essentially ipconfig for *nix) eth0 = the interface we are dealing with, if you have multiple network cards you can have eth0, eth1, etc also Wireless cards can have different interface names like ath0 is one I see for atheros wireless cards. up/down = what to do with the interface, up makes it active and down deactivates it. I hope you find this information helpful.
  2. Have you tried a factory reset on it? a little googling got me to the Cisco site with this nugget. Q. How do you set the router back to its factory default settings? A. To set the router back to its factory defaults, you can either use Cisco SDM or you can go into the Cisco IOS Software CLI and do a "write erase" on the router itself, or grab the factory default configuration from Cisco Configuration Express. In addition, when the reset button is pressed within 5 seconds of the boot up and there is a valid xxx.cfg file in the flash, the router boots up with the xxx.cfg file and avoids the startup-config file in NVRAM. http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral...cd8028a982.html Hope this Helps

    got a Q?

yeah I don't think the virtual machine tech works that way or can even be rigged to work in that fashion. the closest thing I can think of is maybe using a PE boot image and mount the vmdk using vmdk-mount (i think thats the program) to copy things over. However there is the matter of the registry and... well It just wouldn't be pretty. I think what you want sounds more like Citrix, wherein a machine boots up and connects to a server much like a terminal server connection. Anywho, best of luck with this endeavor

    old iphone

there really isn't much out there in the iphone scene for non-activated phones, I think the best thing you will find at the moment for jailbroken iphones in this nature is PDANet for tethering the phone to your Mac or PC. But there's already a carrier setting hack for that. Best thing you would do with it is toss it to ebay and get a few hundred bucks for it.

    got a Q?

I'm not quite sure what you are asking here, are you wanting a Preinstalled Environment with a Virtual Machine? Or are you just looking to take an existing set up Virtual Machine and copy it to a different computer? no idea on the former, but on the latter you can just copy the folder that has the vmx, vmdk(s), etc etc and open it on vmware player on the new pc. It will ask you if you copied it or moved it. I tried moved it before and it seemed to usually fail, so the best option would be that you copied it. If I'm off base with what you are asking please be a little more detailed. Hope this helps!
  6. just a side note, if you wanted to make a PXE boot menu using pxelinux.0 and having the default option boot the first hard drive after x number of seconds. that would be the failsafe if a computer booted to network instead of to the hard drive first somehow. Otherwise You could just select network boot from the boot device selection menu on each machine as needed. as far as gParted i believe it depends if it's a software raid or a hardware raid. hardware raid you shouldn't have any issues with. Also a BIG selling point about having virtual servers on one beefy box is you use less power, you need less cooling options (room wise) so there are budget reasons as well. As far as your co-workers, I think they would love the fact of a ESX/ESXi Server. they don't need to sit at the computer directly for access, and they don't need to have 13 or however many Terminal server connections they would need to manage them all. Just access to the ESX/ESXi box and the vSphere software. I'm not certain but I believe you would be able to manage it through vSphere remotely when connecting through a VPN. (big concern there would be bandwith) and you can have virtual machines running any operating system you want.
  7. a couple of suggestions if I may, I recently have been tinkering with a PXE server and found all kinds of great things I can do. First, as far as making a virtual machine of each computer the program is VMWare vCenter Converter, I do not know and don't believe you can convert back from a virtual machine to a physical machine. http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/ A suggestion that has been given to me before on this very forum is called FOG or Free Open Ghost. It looks magnificent with a web interface to track what machines have been imaged, when, etc etc http://www.fogproject.org/ as far as resizing partitions, I highly recommend gParted, to put quite simply it can be run from anything, CD, USB, and even Network boot. configuring it to run from USB or Network depending on your situation can be a little tricky. But I have it set up on a VM now and running over network boot very solidly. http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ as far as if you wanted to go a solid VM route you can make one server and make it quite beefy, then run ESX or ESXi on it and manage the machines with VMware vCenter. ESX vSphere The ESX page has some great benefits to help you convince your boss if you think it is a route you want to go. One last thought I'd like to plant is with a VMware ESX/ESXi Server you can power off and on a machine easily, rather than having to remote into the machine etc, etc, etc and again you can turn on the machines from the vCenter Interface rather than setting up wake on lan configurations. best of luck!
  8. When it comes to drivers, I think paying someone to tell you what the driver is, is a ripoff. I use a Stand Alone disc from Driverpacks.net and in the event that does not work I go into the device manager, go to the properties for the device in question, go to the details tab, then select the Hardware IDs Property. then you can take the information from there plug it into google and find a good chunk of results. typically it's like "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1092" at most that you need. occasionally when it's a TV Tuner the SUBSYS information is needed as well. Driverpacks.net will get you quite far just so you know ;) it's a bit more running than running a program, but it's free!
  9. cool, I honestly feel stupid that I didn't google it before posting. again thanks for all your help. I'm downloading the Windows 7 WAIK Iso now.
  10. So... my friend comes over as im trying to find a vista disc i can borrow to make a VM for the WAIK and says HEY! I found this thing I wanna try... today he comes over and his tablet is all set up and happy... he borrowed my usb floppy drive and used the Bart's Netboot disk or something like that. And installed the machine from a share off of his windows XP desktop.... I start to wonder why these little gems don't pop up sooner... Sorry for the headaches and thanks for all the help! I wonder if MS is going to make a WAIK that can be used in windows 7
  11. ok so here's what happens when I go to use the whole USB stuff. and it's the same with my USB Floppy drive connected to the unit. It loads the USB Drivers and BAM! now it can't find the floppy drive anymore. I also tried another USB Driver for Dos that allows you to pause and then connect your drive, I tried it both ways with that but still, I end up with the old time error of cannot find command.com or it is corrupt. Options 4 and 5 are sounding like they might be the most viable.... or I can take some time to play with options 2 and or 3 with hopes that I may use them in the future.
  12. Why do I feel like I'm just digging myself into a deeper hole? let me ask this, if i were to take the windows 2008 R2 from dreamspark (yay for MS Loving college students) would I be able to even in the most remote chance be able to load this thing without having to take asprin for the rest of my days to cope with the massive headache? lol
  13. Their video says its for deploying servers, can this be used to deploy Windows XP Tablet Edition with some sort of tweaking or modification?
  14. Ok I'm going to give that a whirl now. Thanks!
  15. The bios itself does not have support for USB Booting, it's an older tablet laptop, Toshiba Portege M205-S810 It has an option for booting from an SD card, but nothing over 512MB is supported (or so the last bios update says). I know the USB ports are functioning because I am able to boot using a USB floppy drive. I tried also installing PLoP to the hard drive and selecting the USB Boot option there and I get bupkis, the screen goes black and hangs eternally. I thought at first ok maybe it's just taking it's sweet time but I let it sit overnight the first time and in the morning still nothing.
  16. That does seem like a bit of overkill to load this little tablet lol, having said that I think I might have an old laptop running windows 2000 if you think that would work for domain and windows DHCP.
  17. I have tried Googling Altris Rapid Deployment pack and just Altris, I either get results for a piece of hardware from altris or mixed results about an HP Deployment pack, do you happen to have a link with more information? Not what I'm looking for at the moment, but definitely something handy to have and think about! Much Appriciated! This might just be me being windows-stupid this morning but don't I need windows server 2003/2008/2008 R2 for this? ------------- Thanks for all the info you guys have been providing, I think I'd still be ripping my hair out from trying to get UDA to work had I not asked here lol
  18. I may have missed that episode but if you are in windows you can use it's built in magnification tool. It's not perfect but it's functional. it resides in... %windir%\system32\magnify.exe
  19. the issue you may be seeing is that either a.) the ports are not forwarded in your router or b.) Your ISP is blocking the commonly used ports for Telnet, HTTP, etc When I ran a FTP server on my home connection I could not use 21 so I used a ridiculously high number like 9001. I do not recommend you set DMZ for that computer's IP unless you just want to test it momentarily to see if your ISP blocks the port.
  20. Hmm I'll have to look at it again then. For the moment I have TeamViewer installed and I'm gonna give that a whirl. thanks again :)
  21. Hello again all... I'm back again because I have a friend's Toshiba Tablet PC here it's a PORTEGE M205-S810. we are trying to get windows reinstalled on it and not having much luck. We cannot find the original toshiba optical drive it came with and attempts to boot via USB optical drives and USB Memory Sticks have failed as well as the supposedly supported option of booting from an SD Card. So we have found we can PXE boot the machine, we have tried several things so far from "WINNER" to "Ultimate Deployment Appliance" and seem to get one error or another. WINNER for example gets all the way done with it's little setup and reboots starting the windows setup and it dies because amdide.sys or some file resembling that name is missing. UDA first tells us we don't have drivers for the NIC and when we add them through the web interface we then get what can only be described by my friend as "gobbly gook". The drivers we downloaded were from Toshiba's support page when entering the appropriate model. I am currently looking at "Unattended" but I'm not expecting a miracle at this point. I really don't want to have to find a Toshiba optical drive just so we can reinstall. Thanks in advance all!
  22. CrossLoop looked pretty cool however it seems you sign up and get a random person's help and looks like it only works in windows. Teamviewer looks like it might just be what I am looking for. I will post back once I know more. Thanks to everyone that contributed! You Guys ROCK!
  23. I have thought about netmeeting but I don't believe there is mac support for it. Something to look into i suppose. Thanks
  24. Hey Guys, I am finding I have to support my remote family more so now than ever since their manufacturer warranties ran out... I looked at go to assist since they sponsor hak5 but it's a 60 dollar monthly fee or a 10 dollar daily/per use.. I have also looked at webex and thought about logmein but webex is just as expensive and logmein I think would be just a big a pain for their free service. Not to mention thier pay service "Log me In Rescue" is ridiculously overpriced... I don't need Free but I don't mind a fair price either. VNC is not currently an option because of the old firewall/router conundrum and trying to help not-so-savvy people open ports is like pulling teeth. The other thing that I absolutely need is ability to help Mac users from my PC... So all that being said anyone have any suggestions or ideas? Thanks!
