  1. eh yeah but these arent brand new laptops... they are from a corporate reflow, out with the old in with the new and all that.
  2. it was more of I could get some P4 laptops for 100 bucks or so each idk what I could get an optiplex for. as far as the backtrack, I wanted to keep it on a separate machine so that I could upload my packet captures and let it run on a brute force and generate new rainbow tables. let's face it, not every SSID is going to be found online from the church of wifi or other places. And even then, the key may not be in the dictionary used to generate the table. This is why I was thinking another machine I can leave running indefinitely would be the best solution. Also a large chunk of the processor would be used to generate some of my own tables. Which is why I think virtualization might defeat the purpose of having these boxes
  3. I have a connection that can get me some laptops at an inexpensive price, I was thinking about setting them up and just letting them run... The short version is this... Do you guys think its worth having one running the latest Ubuntu for misc things like tunneling and other general learning (basically a box I can destroy, reformat, and learn more about linux on) and the other running running BackTrack 4 R1 so I can just transfer capture files to it and keep my rainbow tables and everything on it. Thoughts? Opinions?
  4. you could probably just use a DD-WRT compatible router... if you only want people to connect and go without any kind of authentication or charge that's easy... otherwise you need other software to handle that... DD-WRT supports a HTTP Redirect for that. easy setup if you dont need them to pay and its just connect and go... simply turn on wifi, secure it with a key or not and just have the key in the menu when people order or something like that. configure the VLAN settings so that the wifi is separate from the wired network and viola! edit: oh I almost forgot, be sure to disable "Wireless GUI Access" so they cannot access the router configuration page.
  5. I can't think of any books off the top of my head... However it depends really on where you want to go... I think a good place to start would be to get a copy of BackTrack to play with and read up on how the tools work. In doing so you might learn a thing about the (in)securities of technology. aside from that I'd say look for reading material on Penetration Testing.
  6. All I will say on the subject of installing a software firewall is check out episode 810 and tell me what you think. http://www.hak5.org/episodes/episode-810 Note to listen closely about Teredo
  7. if you are able to access vnc by typing in the external IP but not the DNS then your router is correctly configured as would be our windows firewall. It sounds like the issue there is with the DynDNS settings... what happens when you ping your dyndns address?
  8. I have a similar story to yours, I had an iPhone 3G however there was a twist... I could get out of my contract no problem... I couldn't stand AT&T's customer service or their poor cellular service... my solution? I went to Verizon and got myself a HTC Incredible and LOVE IT! I have yet to find something I cannot do with it besides blend in with the trendy apple folk. Verizon's plans are a little pricey but I like the phone selection and the service is waaaay better than what I had with AT&T that said I'd look @ the phones with other carriers if you can, Sprint and Verizon have a great selection of Android devices imo so I'd check them out if you are able and willing.
  9. im trying to set up a torrent box on a dell running vista home sp2, i have a dyndns setup as well as utorrents web gui, where im running into problems is with tightvnc and the port forwarding on my actiontec router. im running windows 7 home with ie9 beta. i would like to have the computer be a remote torrent box to access it form the win 7 computer, any help would be awsome! Ok so first off, are these computers on the same network? if so and you don't need access from the outside world then you can skip the whole router config, except some ports to help your torrent connection. Your torrent server if you have a web interface on your client can be accessed on your internal network by either the http://computername:port or http://ip:port as far as accessing it, the easiest way would be to add a share of your download folder. Maybe if you can lay some more details on us that would help. Also instead of opening ports on the router and making yourself susceptible to port scans run hamachi or teamviewer to get a vpn connection to the torrent box.
  10. and I don't know why that double posted >.>
  11. In all honesty it probably would, but I don't get the same geeked out warm and fuzzies as when I build something myself and learn something in the process. Well... as long as it doesn't come at a several hundred dollar price tag that is :P
  12. So I just got a new PS3 Slim and prefer it aesthetically to the old fat PS3 (especially since my old fat one crapped out on me) I have one complaint about it and that is that they removed the handy little power switch. Well the short version is I know enough about soldering and wiring things to be dangerous but not much about some of the background know how. So this is a two parter... First if someone could point me in the right direction of learning what I SHOULD know before I got into all this stuff, maybe suggest a book or a website. That would be awesome... Second... would the following diagram work if built? oh yeah im not much of an artist either... but you get the general idea. Thanks in advance guys!
  13. Wanted to get this out there early for those that didn't know about it.... Giveawayoftehday.com has MultiSet 7.8.1 which this is one of their few that allows for commercial usage. Today's Link: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/multiset-7-8-1/ Here's where the question comes in. This has an option to create a bootable USB Flash Drive. I just want to get the idea started to see if we can get this put onto the USB Multipass. Anyone know how we can do it?
  14. so with the wifi and the wired you think i should VLAN them to be separate? also do you know if smoothwall or pfsense etc etc support USB wireless cards? thanks again!
  15. Thanks guys for the input! definitely some great info here. And Mr-Protocol and digip are making me think wifi is definitely a bad option :P Unless I get an access point for B, G and N wifi and set them to only use those (which I think i would have enough hardware lying around to do actually!) I just hope noone decides to run a de-auth tool :P
  16. Do you guys think it would be prudent for an approximate 60-100 person lan party to run a DD-WRT router (like a WRT54G or similar) and then have it run to switches at each table and branching off like a tree from switch to switch? or would it be better to buy two larger switches and run longer cables from them to the client PCs? Also do you think that wifi should be enabled with an encryption key or just keep it off? Thanks!
  17. just wondering about that, were you using teamviewer 5? I have it installed on ironically 7 windows 7 computers a few windows XP and a Windows Vista box or two. I have yet to have any of them crash as a result of Teamviewer. do you happen to know the file reported by the BSoD? Best of luck!
  18. Hey Parman, Might I ask what's the beef with teamviewer? I used to use VNC and Remote Desktop built into windows, and I find TeamViewer to be top knotch. Anyways... if these computers can access twitter, you could do a twitter botnet kind of thing and using VNC to do a reverse connect. *edit* just found it, it was episode 704 that talked about remote controlling your pc over twitter. http://www.hak5.org/episodes/episode-704 *edit edit* the string would be like VNC -connect address(ip or dyn-dns type):port this works because you dont have to open a port on the remote router, but on your home router
  19. Good point Mr-Protocol
  20. I question why your school network would block google images... are we talking about a college network or a high/middle school network? and are you trying to get around the restrictions for your own purposes or ....?
  21. are you trying to mount a share directory directly? \\computer\share I know I experienced some weird issues where it would not accept any password when I was not.
  22. Two things 1.) Is it happening both ways? ubuntu trying to access windows and windows trying to access ubuntu? 2.) Do you really need windows on the desktop? If not then since you hate Microsoft, reformat and install ubuntu. Plain and simple.
  23. Hey guys... I have been googling for several days now and can't get anything to work. What I am trying to do is extract the img files for both the AmonRA Recovery and the ClockworkMod Recovery so I can get a better understanding of how they work and possibly add a spin to it myself. The Short of it is I'm trying to learn by playing around. I have two .img files and have tried both windows and linux versions of unyaffs, i have compiled the yaffs2utils on ubuntu and I continue to get errors. And as a last ditch effort (didnt think it would work) I tried to open the files with winimage... Does anyone else have any ideas?
  24. for anyone that doesn't know Tapatalk is an app for all the mobile platforms except palm and windows mobile that makes browsing / posting / etc on forums smooth and easy from the device. There is a free plugin that the forum owner needs to download and install to get it to work. currently the plugin works for vBulletin, IPBoard, phpBB, and Simple Machines forums. http://www.tapatalk.com/ for more info
  25. easy question lol Am I the only person that thinks support for tapatalk on the hak5 forums would be great? :P
