hakgipc
i herd that sp2 can make torrents slow if this is true how?
armadaender
Apparently, sp2 sets the number of maximum tcp connections to 10. There's a patch for it (below) but that's all I know on the subject. Sparda and VaKo probably know a bit more. http://lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads
Garda
Yea it's true. The reason why is really dumb. As everyone knows, windows gets lots of malware, and to fix the problem, M$ in their divine wisdom decided that since they couldn't make a secure OS, despite how hard they tried and would instead just limit TCP/IP connections to 10. It's the most retarded thing I can think of.
armadaender
"Well, we don't have enough time to fix all of the holes in the door... So, we'll just fix as many as we can. That way there's just a slight problem and we can somewhat control how many things come in at once."
Sparda
No, the maximum number of TCP connections is not liited to 10, thats windows file sharing. The Windows XP SP2 IP stack limites the number of new connections to 10 new connections every second. So if you have set the maximum number of allowed connections on your torrent client to 100, it will take 10 seconds for the 100 limit to be reached rather then the usual errmm... is there a usual time it takes to set up 100 connections? pseudobreed
This really only applies if you notice "TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts" under System in the Event viewer. Unless you are hitting that, you are fine. A nice patch - Use at your own risk, and backup your TCPIP.SYS
Guest Panarchy
Try Using BitTorrent Client. That's worked for me (fast) on both Windows XP SP2 & Windows Vista 5600 & 5472.

cooper
Well, reading that it appears to be a little more subtle. The TCP/IP stack now limits the number of simultaneous incomplete outbound TCP connection attempts. So if the machines you're trying to contact respond promptly, you'll barely notice the difference. The Microsoft logic to this change is however utterly ludicrous. Leave it to them to apply a system-wide fix that will change a user-noticable change in system responsiveness to a new entry in the event viewer that only sysadmins worth their cheddar look at anyways. And all that to make sure a shitty piece of malware doesn't take the box down completely....
