  1. Yeah, I finally gave in and actually got a twitter account recently. I'm liking it. Not completely sure of its purpose for me, but yeah. I'm now following you Darren. Keep the convo going I guess.
  2. Hey all, I'm looking to change my linux-based samba server over to FreeNAS. I'm gonna get a few 500 Gb hard drives. I want to make the jump to RAID 5 for obvious reasons. However, I want to know if I should be looking into some kind of controller card with hardware based RAID or is software based RAID works just as well. I've heard great things about FreeNAS, I'd just like to know the best way of getting the RAID 5 setup going. Thanks.
  3. ok, everything you pointed out is true. However, vista is designed for new machines. If you're getting a new machine, get vista. Nearly all hardware on new machines these days is fully supported by vista. Vista has some good security features and some terrible ones, but in the end you have to be a competant user to be secure on your machine. And some people value good looks. What do you think the appeal of Apple computers is? Basically, Vista isn't perfect but its nowhere near as terrible as everyone tries to make it out to be. So if you don't like the GUi in vista and your current machine is too slow to run it, don't. And don't complain about it.
  4. Yeah I'm running in on a secondary desktop machine. I just recently switched over from XP and I'm loving it. As moonlit said its easy to tweak it to have all the features you could want and I've have no issues getting any hardware to work. Its very stable, which is awsome.
  5. 1 x 17" Acer LCD, 1 x 22" wide LG LCD and 1 x VisualSensations 17" CRT, plus my laptop on synergy
  6. Also, don't expect to get "Surround Sound". If you have an old receiver you aren't getting real surround sound anyway. AKA your MP3 player only outputs on 2 channel, left and right. Whereas surround sound has 6 or even 8 channels.
  7. What episode's show notes are you looking for? Because 3x01 show notes are up, there is just no link to them. http://wiki.hak5.org/wiki/Episode_3x01 Also epsidoe 3x02 notes are up, but with no link but are at: http://wiki.hak5.org/wiki/Episode_3x02
  8. That's what I was thinking about doing, but I'm an AMD guy so it may be hard to find one.
  9. Ok, I recently came across an IBM 73PO596 mobo with some form of pentium 4 processor on it. Its in the original thinkcentre case but it has a new Thermaltake PSU. The PSU works, I tested it. However, when all plugged in, the system will not post, it will not even power on. I was wondering if there are any ways to narrow down the problem? Is it the motherboard or the CPU?
  10. thanks for essentially repeating what I said but with much more detail digip! and to be honest, blankets would be a much better idea than trying to get curtains....I just happen to have some when I did my room is why I say that.
  11. Just to clear something up, a healthy human can hear down to 20 Hz. So you would be filtering out those sounds that are still a part of the music. Second of all, if the sound penetrates the walls, the best solution would be to change the walls, not the sound. If you wanna rock, don't take away from that. There are lots of easy and cheap ways to sound-proof a room. Large, thick curtains and egg crates tend to be the cheapest way and tend to be effective. You are correct in saying that the low freqencies will cause the most disturbance in the rooms next to you, but they ones that are disturbing are in the audible range. Also something to consider is the time it would take to run a frequency filter like you are suggesting on your entire music collection. If I were you I'd buy alot of eggs and get some old stage curtains form eBay or something and soundproof it up. Cheers.
  12. So I was going through a box of old MP3 players and I found a couple of those Sony MD players that were all the rage like 3 years ago. Obviously, since they are a Sony product, they didn't last very long. However, I noticed that I have a significant amount of those MD discs. I don't think they'd store much data, but it would be a neat mod. So if any of you have found out how to do it, or already know how or have any idea on how to get this started that would be awesome. Also, if you know this isn't possible, please let me know. Thanks.

    AntiVirus

Hey all! So I was doing the annual clean up of my mom's computer the other day and Norton Antivirus popped up asking to be renewed. Now I loath Norton with every fiber of my being, but I'm not familiar with any open source antivrus that is good. If anyone can recommend me any other anitvirus software that they've used that they actually like it would be helpful. Thanks!
  14. Thanks for the quick reply. I'm checking out K!TV right now and I'm also looking at DScalar. It allows me to put a bunch of filters on and allows deinterlacing so its kinda nice.
  15. Hey all. I've been looking around for a decent open source app to run my tv tuner. I don't need anything special, I just wanna be able to see the input feed on my screen. I've tried things like ChrisTV and I've spent alot of time on google, but if you know any off hand that are good, it'd be nice to know. A windows app would be best, but if there's something good for linux or BSD that's be good to know too.
  16. that is the best way, yes. As for your torrent, I dunno cause you should be using a purchased verison of OS X. However, that aside, how are you planning to boot into OSX after you have it on the slave drive? You might want to research that a bit before you jump in head first.
  17. I've had this problem with AOE2 a million times running XP, 2kPro, Vista and 98SE. What worked for me was to upgrade Direct X. Make sure that your cousin is running hte exact same verison of Direct X as you are and then it should work seemlessly. This does work.
  18. If your processor supports SSE2 and SSE3 instruction sets than you should be good to go for iLife.
  19. I didn't run anything over the network. My friend went around and placed the program on all the computers using an admin account we happened to have. There was no security to bypass since we had admin. It was a special time before they upped security this year. And changed all the admin passwords.
  20. Well this isn't a batch file but it was fun. One of my friends wrote a program in VN I think it was that would open and close the CD drive of the computer. We had the prgram loaded on a bunch of the computers at school. It would count the number of times it opened and closed. It was great fun to watch our incompetant teacher try to find out why all these computers were "going insane" as he said.
  21. I tried linux on my primary desktop for awhile. I've found that the linux GUI just isn't a replacement for windows. Also, if your a gamer Windows is much easier. There is no easy way to get all your favoutire games going in Linux. However, I have a 2 linux boxes. Its a really powerful OS for server applications. I would take it over Windows Server anyday. But from my experiences its not a wonderful desktop/gaming environment. Its not bad, bu as said above its no XP or OSX.
  22. It doesn't sound like your over complicatingthings; in fact you seem to have a farily specific idea which is a good start, especially since most of my projects start out vague and then end up half done. Anyway what do you want to monitor the electric flow in a wire for? Also, do you want to measure current or voltage?
  23. lauching any game or app that uses direct X on the secondary display is not possible as far as I know. Direct X and other graphics processing stuff is only on the primary display. The only thing I could suggest is if you switch which monitor is your primary.
