  1. I have friends who have lived in China their whole lives, within the past few weeks they've been talking with me trying to find the easiest way for them to circumvent the Great Firewall of China. In the past it wasn't a big burden for them, the wall didn't block anything they cared about, although recently they've been cut off of Hulu. Ouch. I've already set up a simple web proxy in the past that stripped and obfuscated as much information as possible, the firewall is so inconsistent it is hard to tell exactly what it's filtering. The bad part about the proxy is that it won't stream video or sound, bummer. Now I'm torn on what else I could do, I've done VPNs before, but I'm wondering that with my 1mbit upload, how well will I be able to host streaming video? Will higher encryption slow the speed down? Which of the choices out there will be the fastest? I've had experience with a good amount of the proxies out there, nothing really of this caliber, just me being paranoid at Hotspots. I was hoping to get some assistance from somebody out there with experience with proxies, possibly even other digital asylum hosts out there. Thanks in advance for any input.
  2. First up, a small look into my living quarters. I live in a fairly dilapidated house, and the insulation in the walls let nearly any sound pass through unimpeded. I, like many others, play music while I work, and I like to rock. Now I am a fairly modest rocker and don't play my music loud at all. Now I have a very basic understanding of sound, and what I figure is that the lower frequencies can travel through matter easier, causing less vibrations and deteriorating at a slower rate... higher frequencies doing the exact opposite, causing more vibrations and dying out quicker. Please correct me if I am wrong. Here is my question: Will editing a song to filter out some of the lower frequencies (practically in the infrasound range, 30-60hz and the like) cause my music to stay inside the room? Are there any equalizer settings or treble/bass settings that could be changed? You know, the quick fixes. Will removing the near-infrasound frequencies make a noticeable change in my music? I will tinker with my music once I get some free time, adjusting software is so much cheaper to do than deadening the sound in the room. Any input would be awesome. Thanks in advance.
  3. Sparda> Yeah, I know it's a bit of a bad idea. But if I ignored all my bad ideas, I would never have any ideas at all. Cooper> I have considered another index file, and if I don't get this PHP thing figured out in a couple of hours, the lazy part of me will just go ahead and throw it in. Hm... is it possible to share variables between languages? I.E. PHP creates a variable and in the same script, could Javascript change that variable, then later in the script, have PHP call it again? Ah, and another reason I should probably not wimp out and figure out this PHP dilemma. It wouldn't be a bad idea to be able to filter certain file extensions such as .JS, .EXE, .HTML. sounds like it could be a nice bit of knowledge to have.
  4. On my rented webserver, I have set up a simple PHP form to upload files into a folder on the website. The problem is, I would like to have the directory the files are loaded into stay clear of any index files (the Apache default is so delightfully simple). Because any file can be uploaded, anybody can upload a blank index.html file or an index file that redirects to oh say... homosexual pornography. I must say, my PHP skills are horrible, I am more of a Javascript kind of guy. This was pretty much patched together with snippets. Now, would there be any way to have PHP use a conditional statement to check the text in the upload form (your standard browse file and upload form), and either... A)Continue with the upload, or.. B)Redirect/echo/close the window depending on if the word "index" appears? Thanks in advance.

    LAN defense

It all started out one day at lunch with some friends.. Event one: with some social engineering, a friend made me activate one of those novelty electrocuting cell phones. I let him go, always glad to encourage good social engineering. But all I could think about for a while was "Wow, that sure did suck, my hand hurts now." Event two: Poor LAN etiquette... people have a tendency to reach over and press the power button on your computer when you are becoming a threat on <insert game name here>. Event three: I was browsing the internet and came across http://www.xoxide.com/logisys-multifunction-panel-black.html and then it hit me! Disconnect my power/reset switch and electrify them like the cell phone! Dependent on the remote power/reset switch for booting, of course. So while my gray matter is hard at work, I ponder... What method should I use to electrify the buttons? What damage could this potentially cause to my computer? What voltage should I be thinking about? I have yet to take a deep look into the case and all of its intricacies, but a cursory glance leads me to believe that the buttons, along with its surroundings is aluminum. There should be plenty of room for what I need and I have more than enough experience in case modding to be able to insulate the buttons if need be. It's late and I am not in the "thinking mood" right now, I will get back to this in the morning hours but I leave with this: The buttons are disabled, electrified, and when touched, leave the person with a painful reaction and a vulgar statement in which I can reply, "Turning off the computer won't put the head back on your character's shoulders." Go ahead, reply away.
  7. I like the fan ideas, definately a good idea. Perhaps I can put them together into one Ultimate Mega God Fan! The safety is always a concern for me though, I will take the necessary precautions. But if I do managed to take a shock or two... my mother tells me of a time when I was 3 and I jammed her car keys is a 220 AC socket, another time I stuck a safety pin in another 220 AC socket at school in the.. seventh grade I believe. Those are the two funniest times I remember electrocuting myself. My philosophy: The wounds will heal quicker than the event stops being funny.
  8. What should I do with them? I have accumulated about seven dead power supplies over the years of computer repair and I don't even want to bother to fix them. I thought about fixing them, but then I open them up and realize I don't really need another working 200W power supply. What fun is a crappy working power supply when it could turn into a weekend project?! I have considered opening them up to harvest some parts for Project T.U.N.B.A(See http://www.nukedetected.com/bling.html), or just using the parts for whatever project arises later. Give me a hand, what should I really do with these things? Just pitch me an idea or give me a link to a site, I will figure it out. Thanks in advance.
