Hey all, I'm looking to change my linux-based samba server over to FreeNAS. I'm gonna get a few 500 Gb hard drives. I want to make the jump to RAID 5 for obvious reasons. However, I want to know if I should be looking into some kind of controller card with hardware based RAID or is software based RAID works just as well. I've heard great things about FreeNAS, I'd just like to know the best way of getting the RAID 5 setup going. Thanks.

ok, everything you pointed out is true. However, vista is designed for new machines. If you're getting a new machine, get vista. Nearly all hardware on new machines these days is fully supported by vista. Vista has some good security features and some terrible ones, but in the end you have to be a competant user to be secure on your machine. And some people value good looks. What do you think the appeal of Apple computers is? Basically, Vista isn't perfect but its nowhere near as terrible as everyone tries to make it out to be. So if you don't like the GUi in vista and your current machine is too slow to run it, don't. And don't complain about it.

Yeah I'm running in on a secondary desktop machine. I just recently switched over from XP and I'm loving it. As moonlit said its easy to tweak it to have all the features you could want and I've have no issues getting any hardware to work. Its very stable, which is awsome.

Also, don't expect to get "Surround Sound". If you have an old receiver you aren't getting real surround sound anyway. AKA your MP3 player only outputs on 2 channel, left and right. Whereas surround sound has 6 or even 8 channels.

Ok, I recently came across an IBM 73PO596 mobo with some form of pentium 4 processor on it. Its in the original thinkcentre case but it has a new Thermaltake PSU. The PSU works, I tested it. However, when all plugged in, the system will not post, it will not even power on. I was wondering if there are any ways to narrow down the problem? Is it the motherboard or the CPU?

Just to clear something up, a healthy human can hear down to 20 Hz. So you would be filtering out those sounds that are still a part of the music. Second of all, if the sound penetrates the walls, the best solution would be to change the walls, not the sound. If you wanna rock, don't take away from that. There are lots of easy and cheap ways to sound-proof a room. Large, thick curtains and egg crates tend to be the cheapest way and tend to be effective. You are correct in saying that the low freqencies will cause the most disturbance in the rooms next to you, but they ones that are disturbing are in the audible range. Also something to consider is the time it would take to run a frequency filter like you are suggesting on your entire music collection. If I were you I'd buy alot of eggs and get some old stage curtains form eBay or something and soundproof it up. Cheers.

So I was going through a box of old MP3 players and I found a couple of those Sony MD players that were all the rage like 3 years ago. Obviously, since they are a Sony product, they didn't last very long. However, I noticed that I have a significant amount of those MD discs. I don't think they'd store much data, but it would be a neat mod. So if any of you have found out how to do it, or already know how or have any idea on how to get this started that would be awesome. Also, if you know this isn't possible, please let me know. Thanks.

Hey all! So I was doing the annual clean up of my mom's computer the other day and Norton Antivirus popped up asking to be renewed. Now I loath Norton with every fiber of my being, but I'm not familiar with any open source antivrus that is good. If anyone can recommend me any other anitvirus software that they've used that they actually like it would be helpful. Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm checking out K!TV right now and I'm also looking at DScalar. It allows me to put a bunch of filters on and allows deinterlacing so its kinda nice.
