Do you really find those barriers just because you happen to be a Muslim? That would surprise me, because unless your *really* fanatical about your religion (I worked with a guy doing website support a long time back who refused to support sites which featured sexual content, i.e. a online sex toy shop) I couldn't see it causing a problem.

Under Windows expanding RAID arrays and changing the RAID level is largely down to the RAID controller used, be it software or hardware. You just need to replace all the disks in the array with larger ones. Expanding the partition is easy under Vista/2008 or higher, and is done via the storage management mmc.

I should clarify, consumer Dell is shite, enterprise Dell is really good. A problem like that with a Latitude would have taken a 10min call to fix.

Macbooks are excellent for people who either don't care about computers (only the things they do with there system), or people who want a usable version of UNIX to work with. I do like the look the the pro's but I can't stand the trackpad, the non-removable battery is an issue and they don't do on-site repairs for portable systems which might be an issue if its going to be exposed to harsh conditions (vibration is always a killer for laptops, especially the newer LED screens).

We've been using Dells at our place for years. The E series is sturdy, reliable, has drivers for both the x86 and x64 versions of XP, Vista and W7, you can customise your order to suit your needs, excellent keyboard, spare parts are easy to get hold of years after dell stops selling a model and the 3 year basic warranty (in the UK) is NBD on-site. If you really need a laptop you can cart around and not worry about, you can get the ATG version which is semi-rugged for about £300 more. Not sure about Asus, but it would appear that if it breaks (or you break it), it has to go back to the service center for awhile.

Both those traces show the correct IP, but in one case the packet is dropped by either Hak5's VPS or the router in front of it. So the site is resolving correctly, and packets are reaching almost the entire way. If it was redirection you would see evidence of this when you attempt to browse the site, not just have it time out and fail. This is where I need to look when I get somewhere sensible.

In answer to question 1: Set Microsoft Updates to check daily and install automatically, install windows defender. For AV I like MS Security Essentials and Anti-Vir, both are free and easy to use.

OpenDNS won't make a blind bit of difference as he can resolve the domain correctly.... If the OP can PM me the IP's he's using at each site, I will check the server but I doubt anything at our end is blocking you.

In layman's terms, its agreeing to sell some hi-tech widget for £100 to someone, but just before the money switches hands turning around and going "Billy Bob just offered me £110, deals off". I can't enforce this, but its an easy way to piss people off.

At the end of the day, if you want Android and you want to get crap free, timely updates then spend the money on a Nexus One, google are still selling them as developer phones.

If you have to spend money, don't bother unless heat is an issue. But if heat is an issue, consider doing PFsense embedded on a Compact Flash card instead. Disk IO isn't going to be an issue either way so buying a fast disk is going to be a waste of money. Even if your using a 4200 rpm disk and running squid, its still going to be way faster than your internet connection buy a long way.

I purchased a Nexus One direct from Google, as I want Android updates ASAP. Prior to that I had a HTC Hero I purchased directly from HTC, and a Nokia E71 purchased directly from Nokia. All of these can be used on any GSM network on the plant (given radio band support). Rooting an Android handset has nothing to do with the network lock. By default, you do not get superuser permissions on an Android handset, you can use various exploits to enable root access, which allows you to remove carrier installed apps which are otherwise permanent, and run applications which require permissions elevation. A rooted handset can still be network locked, and a unlocked handset still requires rooting to run apps with superuser privileges. This is again seperate to unlocking the bootloader, which is required to install a custom rom. (Windows Mobile was so much easier)

In the EU its simply a matter of googling "<phone model> sim free", as we use SIM cards here. Sites like Clove.co.uk offer a large range of phones that are unlocked, and you can just put any networks SIM card in the device and use it. You will end up paying full price for the handset, so an HTC Desire is going to cost you around £380, compared to £0 + a 18 month contract at £35 a month. All in all, it costs you about £100 more over 18 months, but you get crap free firmware when it is release, and not when the carrier has finished fucking it up. I started doing this as the phones I wanted were not on the networks that offered me the best plans.

This is why I will only buy unlocked phones directly from the manufacturer. Network provided phones are always full of crap, anyone else remember the Orange Homescreen?
