  1. Ooo. $8.50 for the player, $30 for a 1GB card. That's under $40 for a 1gb player and if you've got a SD card reader in your PC... Bliss.

No ipod killer but I know for that price I wouldnt mind one in the car for when I forget my ipod (I've always got a SD card in my cellphone)

  2. First off, it's great to see viewers from Torrent. That was quick, it just launched on the 6th. Welcome Canadians (and everyone else bit-torrenting torrent ;) )

There is a mouse plugged in, just incase things get borked but for the most part it's not needed. The system currently boots windows XP straight into MAME32 which has the controls mapped with proper menu support. It works great right out of the box. We'll get flamed for not using KnoppMAME (I think thats the name of the distro) so I'll throw that suggestion out there too if you want to do it with linux.

In episode 5 I believe Wess goes into more detail about the hardware and software of the unit.

I know of a few people that have gotten interested in the do-it-yourself arcade project from the show, mostly on the arcadecontrols.com forums.

  3. yeah ive been looking at alternatives since youtube put that 10 minute restriction on and it looks right now like google video is the best option. some of the episodes has already been uploaded there which is great, but we have no way of getting stats from google video like we did with youtube which is a bummrt.

I'm looking at alternatives but for right now I'd rather not go the route of converting the video to SWF and hosting the flash version ourselves since it would eat up precious bandwidth.

  4. Just took a look at the image. Normally I'd freak out about it not being 300 DPI for your print size, but in this specific case I think the pixelation will actually add some retro flavor to it and it should look great at a distance.

The hak5 poster was done in photoshop at 3'x5' at 300dpi then saved as a PDF which the copy shops like. Vector is your friend when blowing up images like that.

I've always wanted to find some way to save the google maps satelite images for my city to one huge 3'x5' 300dpi image to have printed but that would require google api hacking that I unfortunately dont have time for :(

  5. Fedex Kinkos plotted it. $0.75 / sq. ft. for black and white (our old poster) or $3 / sq. ft. for color (our new poster)...

It gets expensive doing full color that size but I think it was worth it for the set.

Cafepress will also do 'em, but not as big and for way too much money.

  6. There is some very interesting discussion going on here so I'll break from my vacation for a few minutes to add my 2 cents. I apologize in advance if I don't cover all of the issues raised here.

First of all, on the idea of a common studio space for vidcasters I have to say being one and knowing lots of them this has been a dream we have all had for a long time. I can't count how many times this topic has come up in discussion with other vidcasters. While I think it's a great idea and fully support it there are a few minor details that have kept it from coming to reality. This is not to say that I don't want it to happen so don't read it like that. But firstly there is the question of location. There are many shows that I believe could benefit from such a studio, however we are so spread out geographically that it seems infeasible. There seem to be a few IPTV hubs right now, first of which being Toronto which consistantly brings us great shows like CommandN, LabRats, and Openalpha. Then there is the west coast with vid/podcast networks like TWIT and Revision3. Then there's us, Hak.5 in Virginia, StepONE in Florida, AlmostAGeek in Hawaii, etc, etc. When we decided to convert part of our apartment into a studio it was because there were no other vidcasters in our area and building and breaking down the set every shoot day was getting tiresome. I am also a firm believer that a good vidcast set can be built out of a spare room with little money. Total cost of the Hak.5 set is probably in the range of a few hundred dollars. Secondly shows like CommandN don't really have a set. They shoot on the streets of Toronto or other interesting places and I think that adds a lot to the show. Openalpha is shot out of Jenn Cutter's bedroom with a nice backdrop, some lights, and a really kick ass camera.

So in the present, while I believe the major tech IPTV shows that have pioneered this landscape are already doing a great job on their own and while we could benefit from a shared studio things like geography and monitary and logistical issues come into play.

As for vidcasts yet to be seen I think one of the best things to do is take advantage of your local colleges resources. In film school at VCU you could schedule time using the green screens, or even borrow cameras and audio gear.

Ok, I'm getting a little long winded here and I want to touch on the 'quitting mainstream television for 5 months' thing because it's a fantastic experiment which I've been doing as well for the last year, but I have to run this second so I'll get back to this post later.

Sorry to cut it like that, looking forward to more insight on this thread.

  7. I can't take credit for any of those wallpapers. Those were done by a great fan, TestMAD (From West Virginia, not Seatle Washington). I'd love to incorporate the style into the transitions for the show.

  8. Thanks for the tip. I'll be checking out both DVD Architect and DVDLabs. I have all the shows in 8-12GB NTSC DV AVI files. I hope DVD Architect will be able to transcode those to MPEG2 without problems.

I'm using Vegas 4.0 so I hope it will be compatible. I have had Vegas 6.0 available for many months but been reluctant to upgrade since I'm very comfortable with 4.0 and can quickly edit segments with it. Thoughts?

  9. Hey guys. Ok, so I know the torrent feed has been fubar'd for a while. Sorry about that. I figured now that ep9 is out I can get off my ass and fix it. Problem was that when filefarmer (the webhost that sucks) went AWOL we lost our broadcast machine which publishes the torrent feed. thankfully the torrent feed is through feedburner so i can easily redirect it.

    Right?

Not quite. In doing things as simple as possible I've created an account at del.icio.us for the torrent xvid feed, which is great because if you head to http://del.icio.us/rss/hak5torrentxvid you'll get a very nice feed complete with episode synopsis. Here's the problem though.

For some reason feedburner will not accept the feed from delicious. every time I try to modify the feed URL I get an error saying it cant read the feed. which leads me to believe maybe delicious is blocking feedburner or something.

Does anyone have any insight on this?

I mean, technically I could just say on the website "hey the torrent feed has changed, here's the new URL" but I feel bad for everyone whos already subscribed that will have to reconfig their podcatchers.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it and since they've been down for 2 months everyone has removed it anyway.

Thoughts? Suggestions? your feedback is helpful.

  10. incase anyone is wondering how to do this in windows the system command will execute the program in php but in order for it to open on the desktop you need to open the properties of the php service and check a box that allows interactive mode on the logon tab.

sorry i cant help with the linux side of things. call me a noob if you want.

  11. Thats a bummer spektormax. I'm no master modsmith but i'd say you might have an easier time doing it with a usb gamepad just like in ep4. should interface with your DDR computer program.

  12. actually, linux. but i can't say which distro. that info was disclosed in ep 7.5 (v-day special). but the evil server character has not finished developing. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of him in the near future.

And as for the easter egg hunt idea, I love it.

  13. Great news people! This morning, April 1st, Technolust Productions has signed over all rights to Hak.5 over to our favorite American tech station, G4. Our show will now join G4’s amazing lineup along side The Man Show and Star Trek – The Next Generation. In order to fit G4’s demographics however a few changes will be made to the show.

The hacking segments will be replaced with game reviews, but don’t worry. We’ll hack the games with cheat codes like up-up-down-down-left-right-left-right-B-A.

The Modding segments now primarily focus on hacking the Xbox. Tune in each week as we show you yet another way to add a mod chip, install an xbox media center, install a mod chip, backup games, and install a solderless mod chip.

The networking tips and tricks will be replaced with game reviews, but don’t worry. We’ll be showing you how to run your very own xbox LAN party. Every week!

And of course Alli will be manning the IRC chat and taking viewer questions. We’ll put on a fake smile and pretend we care.

Don’t worry; it’s not all over though. We’re still keeping the Trivia segments. Though questions will be more like “Which key’s the any-key?” and “Have you ever played Mega Man?”

We’ll also be playing the same 3 commercials throughout the show, over and over again. It’s a small price to pay, but we’re almost positive that the 10% / 90% content to commercial ratio will keep you entertained!

We’re excited about seeing Hak.5 on G4 soon. Well, actually they’re changing the name to Hack-of-a-Show, but I’m sure it will still be cool.

    –Hak.5
