  1. where religion, race, sexuality, or nationality don't mean jack

    Modification to Hacker's Manifesto anyone?

come to think of it, your right thats probably a subconcience inspiration.

For anyone that hasnt seen it:

Another one got caught today, it's all over the papers. "Teenager

Arrested in Computer Crime Scandal", "Hacker Arrested after Bank Tampering"...

    Damn kids. They're all alike.

But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950's technobrain,

ever take a look behind the eyes of the hacker? Did you ever wonder what

made him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him?

I am a hacker, enter my world...

Mine is a world that begins with school... I'm smarter than most of

the other kids, this crap they teach us bores me...

    Damn underachiever. They're all alike.

I'm in junior high or high school. I've listened to teachers explain

for the fifteenth time how to reduce a fraction. I understand it. "No, Ms.

Smith, I didn't show my work. I did it in my head..."

Damn kid. Probably copied it. They're all alike.

I made a discovery today. I found a computer. Wait a second, this is

cool. It does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake, it's because I

screwed it up. Not because it doesn't like me...

    Or feels threatened by me...

Or thinks I'm a smart ass...

Or doesn't like teaching and shouldn't be here...

Damn kid. All he does is play games. They're all alike.

And then it happened... a door opened to a world... rushing through

the phone line like heroin through an addict's veins, an electronic pulse is

sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought... a board is

    found.

"This is it... this is where I belong..."

I know everyone here... even if I've never met them, never talked to

them, may never hear from them again... I know you all...

Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They're all alike...

You bet your ass we're all alike... we've been spoon-fed baby food at

school when we hungered for steak... the bits of meat that you did let slip

through were pre-chewed and tasteless. We've been dominated by sadists, or

ignored by the apathetic. The few that had something to teach found us will-

ing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert.

This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch, the

beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying

for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering gluttons, and

you call us criminals. We explore... and you call us criminals. We seek

after knowledge... and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color,

without nationality, without religious bias... and you call us criminals.

You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us

and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals.

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is

that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like.

My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me

    for.

I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual,

but you can't stop us all... after all, we're all alike.

  2. Salvador,

Dude, sorry everyone bashed you for the all-caps, not knowing a ton about computers thing. What everyone seems to forget is that we were all noobs at one time.

If you haven't already I highly advise using http://wikipedia.org/ for your research needs. It's a great starting point with a lot of useful information and links to other resources. Once you have more specific questions or general input on topics I hope you'll join us in the discussion here, in lowercase letters.

  3. Ask anyone on IRC what I'm doing on the 3rd and 4th of the month. I'm cracked out on so much redbull / mt. dew amp / anything i can get my hands on that it gets pretty bad. trying to post files to the torrent tracker when your hands are shaking is always fun.

damn, why do i kill myself over this.

/me looks forward to season break ;)

  4. wet, I *almost* agree with you, but now that im part of the problem i think i'd rather stay non-on-fire. again, just joined because it's become such a stupid big deal that i dont want someone else posing as me. so it's really just a safety registration, which im sure is the same for a lot of people. i'd be interested in seeing what percentage of myspace accounts are actually active.

oh and i think every educational institution should block myspace.com

  5. level 9 sounds interesting. if there are google video / youtube links please share.

as for shows like that... i remember a cartoon on nickelodeon when i was a kid about two koala bears that lived in a tree outside a boys room. thats about all i remember. it think it was a little anime but really not sure.

then there was one about some archaeologists, at least two of them were kids/teens exploring mian temples or something.

thats the problem, we've got google. we can find it, if we know what search terms to use. me, I've got nothing.

  6. i would be lost without ctrl+k define: <word>

actually google has become my fav. spell checker too... I really should get a firefox extension for that though. then again i hear macs have spell check for every text field.... can't wait for those new imacs. sorry, way OT

  7. thing is, we're all geeks. if your not, how the hell did you get here?

anyway, geeks by definition are cool intelligent people. and a lot of us have grown up online, where religion, race, sexuality, or nationality don't mean jack. What matters is I've got an IP address, you've got an IP address, and through network voodoo we're all here on planet Earth.

btw: wess is straight but and i think it's awesome he has a few fanbois. makes for good mic-check material. ;)

  8. all you need to do is make a program that starts vlc with a directory in the paramaters and it will start playing the contents as a playlist, use --fullscreen too. not sure about random but there might be a paramater for that as well. then from what i understand just rename the exe to scr and its a screensaver. or is it not that easy? im really not sure, just what i've read.

    sorry, thats a darren-duct-tape solution.

  9. We've been considering beta testing a live show during the off season (coming up pretty soon). It will likely be a proof of concept beta-cast only announced in #hak5 on irc.hak5.org so we'll see how that goes in a month or so.

  10. I hate to say it, but I checked the other hard drive and I can't find them anywhere. I'm afraid we might have to re-write the missing show notes.

I really should have put them up on the wiki when I had the idea to back around episode 3. Or I should have kept better backups. I'm a geek, I should know better.

So flame your heart out, I take full responsability for the absense of the notes. :( Hopefully once we end the season soon we can revisit all these loose ends that we haven't been able to tackle between our crazy production schedule.

    Ok, back to filming.
