Yes, I agree. Problem is that we lost camera2 back around ep6 or 7. we're making due with what we've got and don't have the funds to replace it yet. Sorry about that, I'll keep it in mind when filming ep9.
Thanks for the great feedback!

thats enough you guys ;)
still coming soon. probably going to shoot it this weekend. :)

The sketches page has been updated to include "Borked Bits" aka GeekyBar, aka the TikiBarTV parody. If you don't get it you might need to first watch "Red Oktober", episode 9 of TikiBar TV ( http://www.tikibartv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=9 )
I also found this image while posting it. If there is interest I can post the full rez version.

Not much to say in these show notes aside from

Enjoy the .5 release!

I loved the old one. One problem, we don't have rights to it. Shhh, we don't want to be sued out of existence. This new music captures the fun feel of hak.5 and I promise it will grow on you.
I hope you can all understand our decision.

Ok, so this is driving me nuts. I still cant get it to work. It might have something to do with my router. I have a Netgear RP614v2. I set up the DynDNS Host and Domain name. I've got Port Fowarding enabled to "PPTP start port1723 End port1723 192.168.0.3". I can get it to work when using my LAN ip address for the host name, but when I try my DYNDNS host name all I get is Error 628. Also, does Port Triggering have anything to do with this? If so what should I set the Outgoing and Incoming ports as?
I really want to get this to work because this is a great feature that I can use especially when going to my friends house's to help them with their PC's instead of me having to take my external HD with me to access my files.
Thanks for the help.
It could be that your ISP is blocking port 1723 incoming (some residential ISPs are really nasty about closing incoming ports such as 80, 21, etc), or it could be as kYd wrote that your trying to connect from inside and not looping back. (don't get me started on this issue, it's driving me crazy). I'm sure any of the hacklings, or even ourselves, would be willing to help you test your VPN. Send a PM with the IP and we'll test. You don't need to provide username and password. If we get as far as getting an invalid username and password error that tells us we were able to connect.

Hey guys, thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. But hate to say it, I'm still having problems. I went to that site and got a DynDns, but now when I log in all I get is the error 628. I set up the virtual server on port 1723. I don't have any firewalls on except for the built in Windows one on SP2. I'm not sure what else to do? And again thanks for the help.
Make sure you port forward 1723 to your computer on your router, and enable VPN passthrough. Then to open port 1723 in your windows firewall use the following DOS command:
netsh firewall set portopening TCP 1723 VPNserver
Also make sure that the user you selected to VPN in as has admin privs.

hah don't want to divert from the coolness that is Hak5 showing mame cabs on a hacking video! but www.arcadecontrols.com is the king of all websites for this business. Just click examples, and view over a thousand examples.
In terms of a front-end, there are a lot of solutions now a days, MameWah is a big one. I personally just use Mame32 for the time being until I get a collection of snaps & artwork. MameWah can do every emulator you throw at it pretty much as long as the emulator takes command line input.
and for a keyboard interface, the I-Pac VE is getting way cheap, I think its down to something like $35 plus shipping from the UK. www.ultimarc.com Hacking a USB pad is cheap, but the disadvantage is you're not using actual KEY maps, so any program that only takes keys, and not Joystick inputs if you're not using Joy2Key you're hosed. I personally use an I-Pac2, saves your key inputs, works wonders, has a keyboard passthrough for when I need to access the computer and type quick.
Arcadecontrols.com is awesome, we did a lot of research there. I need to update the shownotes with all of those links, it was a mad rush to get them done on the 5th so I'm sorry they're a little skimpy.

I've had trouble with the last 2 episodes with bittorrent. I have a "problem connecting to the tracker" and the download never starts. I don't have any trouble with any of my other torrents so I don't know what the problem is. It appears that there are over 200 seeders so it should work.
Any help? Thanks.
What BT client are you using?
We may be moving to another BT tracker soon so that could help.

This is a comment to Wess.
Man, how could you go with X-arcade! Believe me, pick up some happs horizontal pushbuttons and competition joysticks and you will feel a world of difference. Super simple to switch, and you can use those pieces in another independent control panel.
If you need more convincing, Retroblast did a review on joysticks - http://www.retroblast.com/hardware.html he's gotta joystick roundup.
You'll also immediately notice how much better happs horizontal pushbuttons feel, because they use real cherry microswitches. They also use longer but lighter springs, so it feels a lot better.
and where the hell was the Ken infinite combo on that old school sheet?
*don't know if you've also seen this, but free plans! http://users.adelphia.net/~seanhat/arcade/...Design_Rev7.PDF Lusid's plans are classic.
btw, I'm the mod on #byoac irc.scifi-fans.net stop by anyone needs info on this kinda stuff.
Musashi_Sensei,
Thanks for the links, those look great. While I totally understand your feelings about X-Arcade (i know, i know) we wen't with them due to cost. The budget for the project was less than $100, actually considerably less than that (hence the whole broke IPTV'ers thing). X-Arcade's 2 button/2 joystick bundle for $30 is a steal compared to the Happ controls we looked at. At first I wanted the Happs but after looking at costs it wasn't feasible. I would recommend that if your going to do this with a bigger budget, by all means get the better switches and that's why we mentioned Happs and the iPac.
After ordering the x-arcade bundle I was expecting a box of cheap plastic. Well, the plastic isn't as cheap as I expected and I've got to say for the price they do the trick nicely. I don't really notice when playing, however we did not grow up with arcades in our area so some of the nostalga is lost there.
Again, thanks for the links, thats some good stuff, and as long as we're bringing up IRC there is an open invitation to #hak5 on irc.techphile.ca.
I'll bring this up with Wess when he gets home. Thanks for the feedback,

Hi,
Really enjoyed all your stuff so far!
Just a important technical point, which I think has been missed.
So you guys state that you use VPN to encrypt your traffic and stay secure...
Does this really encrypt all your traffic including MSN etc?
Technically doesn't standard internet traffic go directly via the wireless network you are on! Only traffic to your "home" (VPN) machines being encrypted???
A point that was not mentioned... sure this works if you then Remote Desktop into the machine the other end (at home) and generally use that machine.
Please correct me!!
Wouldn't you need to play with your routing table or something?
Yes, I know this was just skimmed over in the segment. There was actually another minute of discussion in that segment that was chopped out for time that went over this in more detail. Basically the way the VPN client is configured is to set the VPN connection as the default gateway. This means once you dial into your VPN all of your internet traffic will flow through the VPN secure. This is good for security and bad for speed. What I mean by that is if your home VPN server is on a 64KB/s uplink, then the fastest you could download while connected to the VPN is 64KB/s. That's not too terrible but its something to consider. You give up a little speed for security.
Now if you wanted to, as you said, connect to the VPN but have your Internet traffic go through the insecure WiFi its a simple setting to change. In the VPN client go to properties then networking. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties. Click Advanced, then unchedk "Use default gateway on remote network". Click OK 3 times and your VPN will be setup so that only communications between you and the host will be encapsulated.
I hope that clears everything up and I welcome your opinions on the segments because we want to give good, and acurate information on the show. I may have been a bit hasty skimming over that and cutting the last minute of the segment but as the producer I'm trying to keep the show flowing and, maybe I'm totally off by thinking this, but an 8 minute segment sounds like a sleeper to me.
Thoughts?

How did you do the split screen thing in Vegas?? That was some pretty cool editing you did. Also what are you using for screne capturing?
ET :D
Just place the overlay on a top layer in the timeline and crop. As for screen caps we are using CamStudio (The one at sourceforge, not Macromedia). To capture linux we run the OS in a VMware session, then capture and crop. I'm sure there is a better way but this works for us.

What is with the BSOD jokes for XP?
XP, I believe, is M$'s first real OS because it doesn't BSOD, I haven't had one in the 3 years I've been running it.
And cause Harrison started talking about music, what do Hak.5 listen to?
.....I would like to request that for epi. 4 is to do the Windows XP/ME/2k/NT/98/95/3.1/MSDOS in VM
You may not see BSOD's in XP because by default it's set to reboot instead of display the BSOD. As for music I listen to everything. I'm too lazy to start listing off stuff so I'll just ls > output and paste it here:
007 (James Bond)
3 Doors Down
311
4 Non Blondes
8 Mile
A Perfect Circle
A-Ha
Ace of Base
Aerosmith
There is a lot more I didnt mention because it's stored on the media center PC in the house and I'm too tired to setup the drive mappings right now, but that should cover at least 50% of it.
I should also note that some of the above music has been integrated with my sister's and ex-girlfriend's collections so you may see some chick/80s stuff.
What do you listen to?
Hahaha...we all know that one's yours!
What can I say? I saw the sign...

/me cant spell
I try and try but just aint happening
Abiword has a pretty good cross platform word processor with spell checker: http://www.abisource.com/
SpellBound is a nice spell-checking firefox extension:

Gasp! Microsoft Word works really well too. Quick tip if you've got it installed:
Windows Key+R, type "winword", <PRESS ENTER>

We started doing that in episode 7 with viewer submissions. We didn't do it in episode 8 since we were already at 40 minutes.
BTW: I'm going over the segment list for ep9 pre-production and this ep is going to rock!
