  1. I setup a fedora web server and it was surprisingly easy, I just googled for a tutorial and burnt a fedora cd
  2. Here's what I would do: 1) Remove the RAM from the machine, see if you can get the BIOS speaker to go off 2) Try a known good power supply 3) Reset the BIOS using the reset jumpers
  3. Hey good hak5 forumers, I made a 'Security Best Practises' document, that kind of explains the answer to 'how do i secure my windoze machine', but since I was too lazy to make another document it's got a little bit of more corporate style practises. Anyway, let me know what you think and if I could add anything... http://pastebin.com/Ey6ww84Z (it was a word document originally, but I couldn't upload that so here's a paste which works fine, apart from one hyperlink doesn't work)
  4. Can you not clone the physical device (dd maybe, or acronis/ghost, or whatever)? At least that way you'd have a backup of the thing. Forgive me if this isn't possible, but I've never come across this before...

    Challenge

I've cracked a password with !BIOS, which worked for my machine - http://www.technibble.com/downloads/misc/BIOS320.EXE

    Challenge

I've been fiddling around with my schools network for a long time, and the easiest way I've found is to befriend an IT teacher (they usually have admin/better privileges than you), and I got mine to give me his moodle password which was the same as his user password. The other way was that all machines are locked down with active directory like all corporate networks should, but I found one machine had issues with this and was far more lenient than the others, for example allowing an executable to run if it was named 'explorer.exe', from which I managed to enable command prompt, and from there you can access everything.... If you're serious about this then post more details on how the machines are locked down using EDIT: it's worth trying backdoor bios passwords, because if you could boot from cd/usb then the machine doesn't stand a chance. Try googling for some
  7. Yeah I've used this many times on my ubuntu machine because I always forget the password for that (I reckon it changes when I'm not looking)
  8. I started to learn VB.net and I'm pretty glad I did; it's partly GUI based, the code is fairly standard and easy to pick up
  9. Nice exploit :), but I imagine it'll be plugged pretty quickly :(
  10. Finally got my hackintosh laptop fully functional:
  11. That's funny, in the Uk they recommend the blackberry and ban the iphone because apparently the iphone doesn't support the encryption http://www.pcr-online.biz/news/33745/UK-Go...ent-bans-iPhone
  12. I think this may be what you want: http://blogs.technet.com/b/markrussinovich...mited-user.aspx GPDisable working download link: http://rs272.rapidshare.com/files/74267191/gpdisable.zip

  14. This could still be used to stop people seeing the activity, but I just wonder what people would do if they saw a screensaver that they've never seen before... I wonder if there's a way to induce the black screen that windows' power management uses.
  15. Are you sure that the 40gb drive is functioning correctly? There may have been reason behind it being in the closet
  16. Firstly I'd try using TestDisk to recover the corrupt partition, or failing that use PhotoRec to recover whatever files you can based on file headers. Remember to clone the drive before doing anything... More tools that may be useful include DiskDigger, R-Studio and EASEUS Data Recovery. This happened to me not too long ago and I managed to get pretty much everything back using EASEUS' software
  17. Offline NT Password & Registry Editor Konboot Puppy Linux Hirens boot cd Hirens mini xp RIP Linux (Recovery Is Possible) BackTrack 3 Ultimate Boot CD 5 GParted AVG Rescue CD Vista PE with diagnostic apps, virus scanners, etc menu.lst
  18. Offline NT Password and Registry editor - http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/ WirelessKeyView - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_key.html (and generally most of password recovery stuff from Nirsoft) I use these tools several times a week and they're godsends
  19. So you should, it's a great wallpaper
  20. Easily one of the best quotes ever is from the 1995 movie 'Hackers': "Oh my god, you got a 28BPS modem!" :o
  21. My friend went swimming with his iPod nano and we tried everything to get it working, but it was stone dead
  22. By choice I'd install ESET Antivirus; great performance, great detection, generally a great all-rounder
