I graduated with a BS in Telecommunications Management and started a MS in Information Security. The best thing you can do is pick a subject you're interested it, get a degree in it, but also explore topics you didn't cover in lecture. Learn as much as you can related to anything security, even if you don't become an expert, you at least have exposed yourself to a specific topic.
  2. I would recommend SmoothWall as a standalone hardware firewall. http://www.smoothwall.org/
  3. Coopers is right, all you have to do is generated one keypair (public & private). puttygen makes it easy, but then the private key can only be used with putty, which is fine if that's all you plan on using. Just make sure you keep that private key safe.
  4. Having the ability to install games to the HDD is a welcomed addition. No more loud whirling of the DVD drive while playing games. I like having the ability to stream netflix on the xbox as well, have not tried it yet though.
  5. i would suggest at least, the nvidia Gforce 9800 or ATI's equivalent if you are going to be gaming. you might want to wait til the spring/summer to build, that's when many more and cheaper i7 Mobos will be coming out.
  6. Looks fine, except for that video card. It won't play Cyrsis very well. And whats up with a screen shot? Don't like to type?
  7. You might want to look into using Linux as the host OS. This would cut down on the amount of resources being used by the host, and allow for more resources to be available for the guest OSes. VMware Server runs nicely on Linux. If that isn't an option, then I would agree with VaKo. Make the host OS the FS and put an extra HDD in the machine that will be used for OS and applications, this way, if you need to blow away the OS for some reason, you don't need to worry about the data being erased. This will also give you maximum storage space on your RAID.
  8. Nice find. I'll have to give that a try.
  9. I found this great Firefox addon called Switchproxy. It allows you to set up multiple proxy configurations to use within Firefox. I like it because it can be used to easily enable or disable a proxy. So when you're out on an open WiFi AP or on another unsecured network, you can fire-up your SSH tunnel and easily switch your browser to use the tunnel. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/125 Just thought I'd share this neat add-on.
  10. I wouldn't say the US has never seen a riot like this. Remember Rodney King, as mentioned before? I will only speak for the US, you cannot say that the US government is doing something right because its citizens are not rioting. More people in the US should be rioting if they had actually payed attention to what has happened over the last 8 years.
  11. I like netscan and angry IP scanner for stand alone and quick mapping on Windows, otherwise Nmap, or ZenMap are great. http://www.softperfect.com/products/networkscanner/ http://www.angryziber.com/w/Home
  12. What Vector is saying, if you are going to preform a MitM attack (Man in the middle) then you would want to spoof the routers MAC. This way, all traffic is sent to through your computer. ps sorry for the double post.
  13. Is he connecting to the wireless? His diagram made it seem like he was connected with an Ethernet cable.
  14. I believe your problem still is that the wireless router is not actually a hub, it's a switch, so only traffic/packets labeled for your MAC address will be sent to you. Packets labeled with your brothers MAC will be sent out the port he is connected to.
  15. I'm experiencing the same issue when trying to open the drive, but I can use the explorer.exe to browse it. I disabled all the modules and installers. The autorun does run and this is a non-U3 drive.
  16. Nice fine, more people should switch to whatever works for them.
  17. Is it one particular CD or all CD's? If it's one CD, try cleaning the disk, you can try polishing the disk with some toothpaste. Always work outward from center of disk to the edge.
  18. There are lot of benefits with going with windows or Linux. How/where do you plan on streaming your media to? xbox? other computers? internet? If you plan on using this box to store/play media from off your local network and have some Linux experience, I would go with ubuntu server edition and then installing a minimal lightweight gui, like xfce (xubuntu-desktop), and run Samba, like WhollyMindless said. Also check out Webmin which I believe was mentioned in Ep 4x14. If you just want to get this box up and running with little OS config effort, then Windows is a good choice. If you plan on using FTP across the internet, look into using SFTP, basically FTP through SSH. Much more secure.
