  1. I just gave it a shot and tried to watch a couple of his videos; the key word being "tried". I found him to be rather annoying. When watching the video about the USB lighter he went off on a tangent about how he was not a smoker. Who cares whether he smokes or not? I don't and certainly anyone that's watching doesn't. That's about all I am going to say about Chris Pirillo. I have wasted enough of my time. One last question. Why would anyone waste their time posting a bashing thread or site?
  2. Damn it, someone figured out how to grow a pineapple with a Fon inside, before I could do it, Curses!
  3. Doh, I forgot to mention to connect via ethernet then try using that telnet command. That's what I get for trying to trouble shoot during finals.
  4. Do a "telnet 192.168.1.254 9000" without the quotes. If that works then shutdown some background programs Like firewalls (ie Zone Alarm) and any anti virus software. the flash utility will sometimes be blocked by these programs with out notification. Strip Windows xp to the bare minimum if you have to, but start with said programs and try the flash utility again. When it starts you will see something like "transfering <file> to root...." Don't worry 9 times out of 10 its a firewall or an anti virus. If you don't see any indication of a file transfer in the flash utility, it just has not been flashed yet.
  5. Does anyone know if a hamster and Ferret program exist for Linux? I tried to do a search for such, but with no success.
  6. Here ya go, it's a pineapple and a lamp. http://www.hawaiiankinestuff.com/vipila3.html http://www.hawaiiankinestuff.com/vipila1.html
  7. Diemonkey, This is a quick fix that might help. First, remove some files from the temp folder also Kill some processes too. Just be careful which process you kill. I had the same issue too and doing that helped get rid of the memory allocation error.
  8. You know what I was looking at the PCB for the fon and if I go get the AA battery holder I could quite conceivably attach some standoffs. If I cut off the threads and then find some suitable adhesive the Fon could sit comfortably on the battery pack. Damn it it all. the batteries in my Sony DSC-H1 died. I'll have to wait for them to recharge. I'll post pictures later. What do you guys think? Good idea or bad idea?
  9. Hey guys, I have a battery holder that holds 4 AAA's. Will this work to? I can imagine that the battery life will be reduced, but it takes up less space in the pineapple.
  10. That is a good idea while you are at home, but lets say you are not at home and you are traveling. There will be a point where you just connect without thinking about it (it happens we are all human). I would like to see some sort of application that would pop up a window with some granular information about the access point so I can plainly see whether it's a Fon or not. Wait a tick, I could work on that next semester in Java. The only scary thought is that someone with enough savvy could apply Jasager (or something like it) to a Cisco router and apply a clever naming scheme.
  11. Success! I have flashed the fon and now I have karma installed oh look a some ones trying to connect I'll have to "nmap over to help them out"
  12. I noticed this when I was flashing my Fon. Look at the last 3 identifiers on your MAC.
  13. If you were like me and the Ap51 screwed up during the flash, I found a handy guide on how to flash the fon back to it's original (or close to it) at dd-wrt.com. note yat you have to set up a TFTP server to do it. Links provided at the end of the post http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/La_Fo...iginal_firmware "Reflashing LaFonera original firmware 1. Download the firmware: * Download and unzip a pre-converted zip file: 7.1.1 version (Enable-SSH hole is OPEN in this version): Link 7.1.2 versions (Enable-SSH hole has been patched in this version): Link * If you want the firmware directly from FON, download it here: Fon.com (Direct link) then follow these steps to convert it to usable files: 1. Remove the first 520 bytes of the downloaded file. o On Linux, Mac OS X (or other *nixes): tail --bytes +520 fonera_0.7.1.3.fon > fonera_0.7.1.3.tar.gz o Windows: Use the mirrored zip files which are already converted. 2. Change the extension of the resulting file to .tar.gz and untar it. 2. You need 2 files from the steps above, kernel.lzma and rootfs.squashfs. Put these in your TFTP server root directory. If you don't have a TFTP server, go back the beginning of this document and set one up. 3. Connect to the RedBoot prompt and type in the following commands: ip_address -l 192.168.1.254/24 -h 192.168.1.2 fis init load -r -v -b 0x80040450 rootfs.squashfs fis create -b 0x80040450 -f 0xA8030000 -l 0x00700000 -e 0x00000000 rootfs load -r -b %{FREEMEMLO} kernel.lzma fis create -r 0x80041000 -e 0x80041000 vmlinux.bin.l7 fis load -l vmlinux.bin.l7 exec or with Fonera 2200 ip_address -l 192.168.1.254 -h 192.168.1.2 load -r -b %{FREEMEMLO} kernel.lzma fis init fis create -e 0x80041000 -r 0x80041000 vmlinux.bin.l7 fis free load -r -b %{FREEMEMLO} rootfs.squashfs fis create -l 0x730000 rootfs reset Reboot the FON and you're done." La Fonera firmware: http://rapidshare.com/files/18083671/foner...packed.zip.html TFTP software: Windows: http://www.jounin.net/tftpd32.html Linux: http://mirror.usu.edu/mirrors/gentoo/distf...pa-0.48.tar.bz2
  14. Woot, I finally got it! I took a tip from fonerahacks.com and turned the power off then back on and telnet'd over to 192.168.1.254:9000 and now I have a redboot prompt. Now I just need to figure out what to do next. This is odd. I had to switch to my linux box where I had most of my tools and for some reason I cannot connect via telnet. However, when I use my Windows XP machine it connects just fine.
  15. Sorry, I had to go to work at the last minute last night and I did not get back until now. I tried port 9000 but it did not work, but I still can ping 192.168.1.254
  16. Mine has not completed after an hour. I closed it and tried to telnet and it did not work, but I can ping 192.168.1.254
  17. I got this going again, how do I know when its done?
  18. Well, the news came from above when I was in database today. OSU (Oklahoma) Institute of Technology is giving in and installing some hardware to block p2p traffic. While this is some good news because all of the bit torrent clients have been bringing the network to a crawl. I just can't help but think that this is not the right solution. Despite what I feel it's going to happen anyway so I guess it's back the sneaker net. BTW this will probably cause all sorts of problems with WOW since it uses file sharing for updates. I can see a few hundred students getting really pissed off because of that.
  19. I think I killed it. I tried a second time and the flash process went to work I waited 20 minutes and nothing changed so I waited a little longer still nothing. I thought that I should try to telnet to 192.168.1.1 but the connection failed. Right now there is no SSID or any wireless activity coming from it. although the fons LAN light responds when you plug the cable in.
  20. I started the Flash process for the fon but nothing has happened after an hour and a half. So for nothing has been displayed in the Freifunk window. This step was pretty straight forward so is there something wrong?
  21. I know, I have when back and had copied the out.hex over each time but for some reason the folder and the file are not showing up I found a solution. I opened a seperate terminal and performed the scp copy with out SSH and it worked
  22. root@OpenWrt:~# cd /tmp root@OpenWrt:~# mtd -e "RedBoot config" write out.hex "RedBoot config" Couldn't open image file: out.hex! root@OpenWrt:~# reboot I tried this command with the path to out.hex and got the same error
