Alfa Awus036H Usb Wlan Bug?

I'm not too sure if this should be reported as a bug or not, but I decided to put it in the forum, and if necessary Sebkinne or others can move it. Although this is not a serious problem for me, it would be great if this was an easy fix:)

So the thing is that when the Pineapple (2.6.3, and prev) is booted with the Awus036h connected the wlan interfaces get switched. Meaning that the internal wlan interface becomes wlan1. I think this might be related to http://forums.hak5.o...-usb-wlan-boot/ which states that 2.6.3+ should be fixed(at least regarding Ralink RT2501.

I'm posting some images to show my findings, and posting logs if needed.

Also the status page says that the internal wifi is not up, although that's what I'm connected via when reporting this.

As a sidenote the Network Manager module is not able to bring up the device, Auto-detect or not. I have to ssh in to the Pineapple and issue ifconfig wlan1 up.

I can also confirm this, when the ALFA awus036h is plugged into the pineapple on boot, it is set to wlan0 and the internal wifi become wlan1. I am on fw 2.6.3, no tested on 2.6.4 yet, gona stick to 2.6.4 until the all the modules that i use are fixed. Would be cool though if this issue could be implememnted into the new fw releases, simple solution atm is to wait until the pineapple is fully booted before plugging the card in.

Yes, there is no problem to just connect the Alfa after boot, however if the pineapple might reboot because of overload or something, then you would have to unplug the Alfa and reboot yet again and then reconnect your Alfa..

However I'm guessing that Sebkinne has enough in the to do list, and somehow I would not like to rush him on things. He has released a lot of dev flashes lately with fixes and new features, so the man's workin' on things! B) Just want to say that I really appreciate the work you do Sebkinne! :D

i have this same issue - and i just plug in my alpha after boot, because my scripts call specifically to interfaces, and i cannot have them switching.i honestly didnt think it was a bug, just one antenna booting before another and being assigned.

Yes I totally agree with you, it might not be correct to call it a bug, but I'm not sure what to call it.. And since it's kind of similar with what Watskeburt reported here http://forums.hak5.org/index.php?/topic/27320-fixedbug-usb-wlan-boot/ I thought I might call it a bug. I'm sorry if this is not correct.

I'm just thinking that it should be possible to add a codeline of some sort, to bring up the USB wlan after the internal wlan. But this is only a luxury issue, no big deal.

Can't say that i have had that problem, what fw version are you running? also double check you're alfa aint a clone, they are pretty common.

About this bug though, you are right, it is because the USB card starts faster.

There are ways around this and they will be explored after the next Stable version is out.

It is a powered hub. I got it from the hakshop, even. I have access to the usb stick whilst plugged into the hub, but not the alpha card. ifconfig -a returns info on wlan1 (alpha 036nha) but can't seem to bring it up. I am using fw ver. 2.6.0. But even on another pineapple, using fw ver 2.5.0 I have same issues.

This is disappointing as I bought it with the markiv pro bundle and now I have to come up with some hacked-ass version of 2 pineapples (one who's internal wifi stopped working) and another one that's brand new. Wait 'til you see this cluster-f@*k of hardware, lol. I'll get it up and take a pic today.

But if anyone has a suggestion as to how to get the powered hub to work with multiple devices, I'm all ears.

A little venting:

I have 3, count 'em, 3 pineapples. One is brand new, just received in the mail on Sat. One will NOT issue ip addresses but sends out beacons. And the last one has to be powered via wall-wart because I have to create tension on the barrel plug in order for it to get juice, and I can't seem to do this tension with a usb to typeM barrel plug. Not to mention that I have no formal training in any of this. Just been playing around for the last 10 years, picking things up.

I'm about to throw it all away, I'm so fustrated.....

I have used this hub plugged into my acer netbook, and I can have all 4 usb ports being used without any issues, it's just the pineapple that has problems, which, again, is quite disconcerting because I bought the damn thing from the hakshop!

I have been screwing around a little bit and think that as a temporary hack one might use some iw comands to first delete the logical names of the devices. But unfortunately my knowledge stops there..

If I issue iw <dev> info I can see that ifindex and wiphy don't "match".

Thanks for the command Peter. But I have discovered that the phyX is not static, I guess that this is rooted before the iw setup and brings up the devices..

Think I have babbled a lot here.. Guess I just have to boot pineapple, and then insert the usb interface. Until there might be an update that is. :)

Just to make a little update about this problem, the problem still occours in v 2.7.0.

But I just recieved my new AWUS036NHA which do NOT have this same issue. However AWUS036NHA is not mounted on reboot, just have to unplug/plug the device and it's operational.

I have noticed the same thing. I am using Mk4 w/ 2.7.0
