Do a WHOIS on the IP, then call the contact number. The conversation should go like this:

In the OTV Studios security department, a phone rings, a man answers nervously.

NORM

Security, uh Norm, Norm speaking.

DADE

Norman? This is Mr. Eddie Vedder, from

Accounting. I just had a power surge here at

home that wiped out a file I was working on.

Listen, I'm in big trouble, do you know

anything about computers?

NORM

Uhhmmm... uh gee, uh...

DADE

Right, well my BLT drive on my computer just

went AWOL, and I've got this big project due

tomorrow for Mr. Kawasaki, and if I don't get

it in, he's gonna ask me to commit Hari

Kari...

NORM

Uhhh.. ahahaha...

DADE

Yeah, well, you know these Japanese management

techniques.

(pause)

Could you, uh, read me the number on the

modem?

NORM

Uhhhmm...

DADE

It's a little boxy thing, Norm, with switches

on it... lets my computer talk to the one

there...

NORM

212-555-4240.

You then dial that number and own the box. If the dialog you have doesnt match the above... Then hang up and call back.

just read this again...

it has no open or closed ports

than what are the ports

this is what I got from it:

Starting Nmap 4.11 ( http://www.insecure.org/nmap ) at 2006-11-03 15:58 Eastern Standard Time

Warning: OS detection will be MUCH less reliable because we did not find at least 1 open and 1 closed TCP port

All 1680 scanned ports on 209.96.105.20 are filtered

Too many fingerprints match this host to give specific OS details

Nmap finished: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 389.671 seconds

that doesnt mean it has no open ports, it just means there not responded to a basic ping on the ports. try scanning it with something like nmap -P0 ip

also, you can guess as to what ports are open, is this a web server? if yes then they would most likly have port 80 opem, try to connect with an ftp client, do you get a connection? if yes then they have an ftp server running and the ftp port is open.

If you ask me though, if you dont know how to find the open ports when nmap fails then you shouldnt really be worrying about someone else's system instead you should be worrying about your own and how you can secure/break your own security ;)
