Help! Hak5 USB Hub/Alfa Woes

So I just received my new Mark IV last week and finally got a little time to play. Setup was smooth and no problems adding USB storage but I wanted additional ports to use the Alfa and storage at once (and maybe some addtional goodies later on...)

So I bought the Hak5 powered USB hub and got it in the mail today. First I checked if the hub was going to backfeed to the Pineapple and after confirming it was I opened the case and snipped the red + wire. Now the hub works great and no backfeeding but there's a new problem. Now I can't get the Alfa to initialize (although USB storage still works fine through the hub). It works fine when plugged directly into the Pineapple's USB and when plugged into my laptop through the USB hub. Has anyone had this problem before? Any ideas of how to get it working?

I was able to get the device to show up correctly in lsusb right after boot but iwconfig never shows the Alfa. Interestingly wlan1 shows up in the Network Manager on the web interface but trying to enable it causes the Pineapple to freeze up and then reboot (ifconfig after seeing it on the web interface causes the same freezup). For this testing I have the wall adapter powering the Pineapple and the Juice pack powering the hub (the Juice isn't the problem since this works find when plugged into my laptop and is recognized correctly).

It just hangs after ifconfig wlan1 up and the blue light never comes on. If I have the Alfa/USB hub plugged in at boot the Pineapple never finishes initialization (I have to unplug the hub to let it boot up.)

I'm using the black Alfa that came with the Elite bundle. Also I don't think it's a power issue since the hub/Alfa works fine when powered only by the Juice pack plugged into my laptop.

I'll have an Anker Astro3 to test with later today just make sure its not power related though.

Well I just tried using the Anker Astro3 and still no luck. The Pineapple just isn't working with well with the Hak5 hub, even though the hub works great on battery power when hooked into my laptop. Does anyone have any ideas other than "not enough power"? I would really like to get this working.

Did you have success just using a different port on the Hak5 hub?

I had the same thought so I tried using a different port on the hub. Maybe all my cables are bad since I have issues on all ports, and not just with the Alfa. USB storage is at least recognized but there's all sorts of errors. All the pads look ok and no visible defects on the board so I'm not sure where the issue would be though.

I'm going to try with another powered USB hub in a few minutes so I'll report back (with either success or more logs...)

RIght now, no.... not a hub cable anyway. I have a powered 7-port Moxa hub I'm about to try but there's no way that's fitting in the Pelican case....

What cable are you using now? I like the Alfa port on the Hak5 cable but it seems rather cheap and well, you get what you pay for. If I buy another one I would need some kind of guarentee it will work. I would return the cable I already bought but well, you know, I snipped the red wire so....

Well, I have 3 alfas (nh, nhr and nha). The original usb cable that came with the "nha" didn´t work with it so I tried with another one. In my case and due to my location it was easier to try another one rather to return it. What seems weird is that it works in your laptop (assuming you are using the same usb cable). Did you try plugging the alfa directly to the usb port of the Mark IV?

I've tested the same cable on two different systems, one Windows and one Linux as well as under VMware, and the cable seems to work just fine (although the case keeps falling apart so I may need to glue it back together the PCB looks good too).

I just tested with my Moxa industrial grade 7 port isolated hub and (after setting the Alfa's txpower low to prevent the hub's protection from locking it up) managed to get everything working! So now I'm very confused as to what could possibly be happening. Perhaps a difference between my other machine's USB ports and the Pineapple's? My last thought is to try cutting the GND wire as well on the Hak5's Data port. At first I didn't want to lost the ground but I can't think of much else to try at this point. Failing that I'm burning the hub and posting a video.

So I think I'll start looking for a new powered hub that will fit in the Pelican case and provide 4-5 ports and not backfeed into the Pineapple. If anyone has a suggestion I'm open to it.

Well it looks like I spoke too soon. I'm having issues with my Moxa hub too (I have a feeling it's mostly due to hard reset caused by a power surge when the Pineapple first loads the Alfa). Storage by itself works fine on both hubs. I still have a couple more things to try, including cutting the black wire on the Hak5 hub. I may edit the WiFi script on the Pineapple to set low power immediatley on the Alfa when its plugged in to see if I can get my Moxa to work for more than 5 minutes.

I've been reading the forums and am now looking at one of these hubs:

Anker Uspeed USB 3.0 4 Port Compact Hub

IOGear 4 Port USB 2.0 MicroHub

Does anyone have any experience with either of these hubs?

The HakShop one is the one I'm having lots of problems with. It was backfeeding power and just isn't working. Read the rest of this thread for a full explanation.

I've read the D-Link hub works and doesn't backfeed so I'm going to go ahead and order it. I might order the Anker as well just for good measure.

If anyone has the HakShop hub working (with power on red and no backfeeding to the Pineapple) how did you get yours to work?

Yes. I also tested the hub on mutiple machines to ensure it was working. Powered by the same Anker Astro3 I power the Pineapple with and it worked fine in everything but the Mark IV. On the Pineapple the Alfa would cause the Pineapple to malfunction.

I tried stress-testing the hub with two Alfas hooked up, battery powered to my laptop. The hub worked for a few seconds and then locked up. I was not able to get it working afterwards. It seems the board is fried or maybe it was defective from the beginning? I examined the PCB of the hub and everything looks fine.

If anyone has the HakShop hub working can you share your setup?

Anyway I'm buying the D-Link hub which should work fine out of the box.

I'm getting essentially the same issue in firmware 2.8 on the Mark IV. Pineapple won't finish booting with the hub plugged in, and doesn't really seem to operate correctly with it plugged in after booting. It's not mounting my USB drive (even though it does when plugged in normally) and when I issue iwconfig it shows my wlan1 as having a txpower of 0 dBm. Very weird stuff.

lsusb shows that both the devices are plugged in, but I think this has something to do with the hub not regulating input power. I had the same back feed issue over USB, but instead of cutting the red wire (not very reversible) I unsoldered it. I taped the red lead that was going to the Pineapple and was plugging into a Samsung wall charger (I don't have a battery pack yet) which is 5v 1A. When I did this, the Pineapple didn't detect my Alfa, so I tried plugging the hub (still plugged into the wall adapter) into my Windows box and it blue screened almost instantly. When I plugged both cables from the hub into USB 2.0 ports on my Windows box, the hub worked as expected, I could use the Alfa and see the USB disk. Same thing for my USB 3.0 ports.

I now have it powered via my Windows box (red cable) on a USB 2.0 port and plugged into my Pineapple. As I said before, USB isn't mounting, Alfa shows up but with 0 txpower. I'm starting to wish I would have read up on this thing before buying it. Does anyone have this thing working?

So, I tried unsoldering the black wire that goes back to the Pineapple with some weird results. lsusb shows the hub is there, but none of the devices show up. The other weird thing is that I could now boot the Pineapple while the hub was attached. This leads me to believe that I am working backwards instead of forwards. Maybe we just need to regulate the power somehow to make sure the feed isn't going back to the Pineapple, but the Pineapple can still send power back to the hub. Does that make any sense? I'm new to electronics in general as far as wiring goes.

Short of some kind of solution, I'm going to try soldering the wires back on and checking to see if everything actually works (I just realized that I never did this when I first got the hub). I know its back feeding power, which could harm the device, so I guess I'll just have to watch my amperage. Maybe I'll have to get a low amperage battery pack (bummer, I was looking at a beefy one). If my research is correct, the one the HakShop was bundling with the Pro pack was 0.6 amps.

I tried soldering the unit back to the original state, it now works exactly as it did with the red lead disconnected, lsusb output the devices I had connected, but I was unable to use them. I guess I'll just have to look around for a different kind of hub. What a waste of $6.

I went for the dlink hub, after having the same issues with the hak5 powered hub, it arrived today and works a treat, with both the usb storage and the alfa plugged into the hub.

Will now grab a 2nd usb power cable for the pineapple as this will power the hub from my usb port on my newtrent battery, to have both the pineapple and the dlink hub powered from the newtrent batt.

I decided on Belikin F4U040v 4 port hub after reading up a bit. Tried it today and everything works great. Now to root the mess of cables (starting to think I may need a bigger case...)

It would be nice to have a sticky thread with a list of known good hubs that don't backfeed power. Probably a note on the HakShop that clearly states the hub they sell does not work with the Pineapple (at least not when it's powered).

Another warning for anyone else having issues with the Elite bundle I just found out the angle adapter included in the kit is junk. If you're having any issues with USB while using it try removing the adapter to see if the problem goes away.

I can't remember if I tried the HakShop hub (with red wire cut) without the swivel adapter (yeah, I know) but it's too late now as I've cut the black wire and it's not worth the effort to solder it back on now that I have a much better hub.

Either way the Belkin hub worked perfectly from try one. Then I had some issues and when moving the adapter noticed the USB light go back on. Tried moving it some more, then without it and so far haven't had any more issues.

So moral of the story: save your money and only buy the Pineapple by itself. The bundle isn't much of a deal, although I hope for that to change in the future.

I was at the mall and just decided that I would try another adapter from Best Buy, lo and behold, the Dynex 4Port USB Hub they sold actually worked! No backfeed, boots with it connected, and all the devices work happily with the Pineapple! Now I just have to get around to finding a power pack and making sure it has a barrel adapter that works with this.
