joeypesci
I might of mentioned a while back about getting ripped off or an attempted rip off (I got my money back via PayPal) on Ebay with a Nokia E71. But I recovered data on it and was able to recover images and 3 phone numbers. But just brought a N900 and haven't been ripped off. Was a decent guy it seems but, it's in my nature, I WILL try and recovery every time. I've found his porn clip collection :) nice. I haven't warned him about that, I don't want to embarrass but told him if he sells any more phones he needs to secure wipe them. As he sent it to and had forgotten to remove all his contacts, phone numbers and e-mail address'. I've told him it's fine, they're safe as I'll secure delete it. So have you found anything interesting when doing data recovery?
digip
Not while data recovery, but when people bring me their computers because they've been infected or its locking up, if its female, usually limewire problems, if its a male, 99% of the time, its porn sites and getting hit with spyware, malware, etc, etc. One guy, who brought me his laptop, had a fake anti-virus software popup, that you couldn't make go away. I rebooted in safemode, did a rollback, then rebooted and it was gone. I then proceeded to see where he was in his browser history, just to see what was what. Yeah, like almost every site were porn sites, and google. oh, and he had an anti-virus installed already. It was disabled and not possible for it to get updates, because the malware had blocked updates, as well as windows updates, via the hosts file. nopenopenope
i was given an old laptop for helping some oldish lady while working at radioshack (i had to re solder her car key fob because the soldering job on those suck) and she had left her resume with ssn as well as a excel sheet with her banking account and routing number on it..... hard drive whipe, i cant beleive what people leave on their computers. if you must, put it on a flash drive, and keep it in a safe, where you would normaly keep such stuff. and then when your done with it, hit it with a hammer, run it over with a car, have your dog eat it, idk something people come on, i could have just stole that persons life. Mr-Protocol
I had a guy sent to me by referral to try and recover his data for the past 8 years from his desktop. I guess his nephew was using it and I guess it was having problems and told him to do a system recovery on it from the recovery partition. I told the guy I probably will not be able to recover anything on it with the tools at my disposal but I would give it a try. I ended up finding a few pictures in web cache from porn sites, other than that is was a basically clean install. When I called him to pickup his machine and told him that it would be $50 he kind of gave me a weird look like he was pissed he had to pay but got none of his data. Obviously he had no concept of how much data recovery costs and how great of a deal he got. Given if data recovery companies don't find anything they don't charge, but this is side work for me so yeah I wanted something for my time and knowledge. Funny part was that I told him I found some adult content on the drive and that if I would have found anything illegal (child pornography) I would have been obligated to report him to the authorities. He tried to blame it on his nephew and his friend visiting is what caused the porn to get on there.
Infiltrator
A college of mine had problems with getting his computer to start up. So after a few attempts and troubleshooting managed to get it to boot up. After a few minutes of investigation, found that his PC was infected so I told him that would have to backup all his data and start from scratch again. During the backup process, guess what I found Adults movies, lots of pictures and every website he had visited were porn. That didn't surprise me at all, why the computer was experiencing difficulties booting up. Its a good thing that I am the one, repairing my computer problems. If it wasn't, I would've been so ashamed of myself. Edited October 5, 2011 by Infiltrator
digip
I think pr0n is like the 99 percentile of finds on computers which tend to have problems. Not surprising in the least, either.
joeypesci
Not an exciting or funny story at all but thought it a bit interesting, maybe cause I knew to security :) Was on Game's wifi the other day (store in UK) because it was open and free. Then decided to pop onto the router page to see if they'd secured stuff properly. Was nice to see DD-WRT was on the router. Cool. So looks like someone in that store knows what they are doing. Or do some routers come with DD-WRT now?

Once I was working on this guys PC backing up his data, I found some naked photos (actually about a dozen) .. its was pretty funny until I realized they were of his daughter lol then it was reallly funny

Any time I had to fix someone computer I would do a backup restore. I havent had a chance to really use software to restore files or anything like that. It would be good to learn some of tools that are good to recover data after the drive stops working or has been formated.
int0x80
One time, I accidentally the whole database. Also yes, some routers do ship with dd-wrt :)

Saved me big time when my NAS drive decided to wipe both drives.

TheKingUnderTheHill
Bought a netbook from a second hand shop, all of the standard data had been removed, but literally booted up Cain (I know, right?!) and got passwords for pretty much everything, went into the hotmail just out of curiosity, and there were e-mails to everything needed for her wedding, which was in a few days... Didn't do it, but the black-hat in me was tempted to message all the services the day before the wedding, cancelling it. Good thing on her part that im not a total asshole. :)
bobbyb1980
A year or so ago a cute girl told me she was having computer problems so like a true IT player I offered to fix it for her. She was a real girl next door type, quiet and shy. I was backing everything up and found very graphic pictures involving her, no clothes, a mirror and a carrot. That was pretty awesome, we're friends now and I've never mentioned it. I've actually fixed a lot of girl's computers and found naked pictures of them (some more graphic than others), they don't really hide them either. The torso breast from the neck to the waist line seems to be the most common. I think it's pretty common.
