  1. If you've never used Linux before I would suggest going to your local public library and getting some books on Linux. It will help you out a little bit, even if the book explains a distro that is different than the one you are running. Basically, keep at it. In the beginning it can be difficult and confusing but the more you use it the easier it becomes.
  2. Yup, works great. Make sure to submit to keyservers.
  3. www.ubuntuguide.org music: Rhythmbox or Amarok movies: Xine games: Enemy Territory, ET:True Combat Mod, Doom III, lots more open office is great and comes preinstalled, open .doc files and stuff, powerpoints, excel files, etc. it's sweet. HTH. :)
  4. Well, I finished generating a very small table. Just uppercase letters for MD5 and tested it out and it seems to work quite well. Doesn't handle lowercase and numbers but I guess that will be next. ;)
  5. So I would need to make a custom character set in order to create a rainbow table that stores upper and lower case as well as numbers? Thanks.
  6. I was reading this: http://www.antsight.com/zsl/rainbowcrack/customcharset.htm Is there a difference between the uppercase and lowercase alphabet?
  7. This kinda creeps me out. Couldn't a government create something like this and basically get into anything? You would need a lot of storage but....
  8. Is it possible to append or update a rainbow table? For example, let's say I finish the configuration #0 example and have just alphabet characters as the charset. Is it possible to update it and add the numbers in instead of deleting and starting from scratch thus losing everything I've done?
  9. I first heard about Linux back in high school. There was one computer in our lab that had some version of Linux on it but I was too stupid to try it and figure it out. Fast forward a year or two and I started getting into Open Source and trying all kinds of distros. Mostly, I'm a Debian/Ubuntu fanboy, but I wouldn't mind branching out and trying Gentoo. Now I listen to podcasts about Linux, visit forums, etc. I ran Linux as my main desktop for about 6 months but I couldn't stay away from all the games on Windows. So now I dual boot. I think I'll still dual boot for awhile and play games but I'm certainly not getting Vista. After hearing about the price and all the crap they're putting into it, it sounds terrible.
  10. Ubuntu ownz all. Don't be a playa hata.
  11. So I've been reading about these rainbow tables and started generating my own for md5. Ugh, gonna take awhile. They probably won't be done until tomorrow morning. Anyway, would it be possible to use this same strategy for the RSA encryption used in the contest?

  13. How about a camera? How "professional" does it have to look?
  14. Could you use the strength of the connection to figure out the distance? For example, from these two wireless routers, the strength is poor but from this third one, it's good so the person is close to the third router.... that's probably too complicted though.

How did you get it for free? There was a quick 2 minute survey for my college and the prize was a nano. Needless to say, I was very surprised... but happy. ;)
  16. Oh I know. Java would never work for a "real" client. I just want to know more on how it tries to crack it and Java is the programming language I'm most familiar with at the moment.
  17. I'm sure many of you are familiar with the distributed.net project. http://www.distributed.net I know virtually nothing about how you would technically go about writing a program like that so I found something simple online. It's in Java and after looking at the code, I can't make heads or tails of it. Can someone give me some pointers? Thanks. :? http://hewgill.com/rc5/ Direct D/L to the code: http://hewgill.com/rc5/rc5java.zip

I like my Nano (cause I won it so it's technically free) but I still can't get ipodlinux on it working. I wish they would update their installers.
  19. There's tons of stuff on Google. Here's what I found: http://www.lanparty.com/theguide/ Do you have any routers/switches etc? You will also need a dedicated server or two. 80 people will require a lot of planning. I've had some that are small around 10 or so and that was pretty easy. I would suggest starting small and work your way up. :)
  20. Yeah, you're probably right. Bittorrent is just really handy for downloading stuff that's really big. Don't ask how long it takes me to get the latest Linux .ISO..... *sigh*
  21. So I'm at college here and pretty much everything is blocked. I can get online and view websites, but that's about it. Bittorrent, online games, and pretty much everything that's fun is blocked. I know for a fact that they use a combination of a firewall and a PacketShaper. After pleading with them to open up and even writing letters to the college paper, nothing has helped and it's actually getting worse. There are some ports open like MSN/AIM etc. work, IRC works, but SSH doesn't. Is there anyway to get around this issue? I thought about running a proxy outside the campus network but that just gets annoying. All I want to do is d/l some of your guys episodes. It sucks. Plus we get like 40 to 50 Kbps down and that's on a good day. The connection is extremely poor. Anyone have any suggestions besides me paying for an alternative ISP?
