  1. Hi. Thanks for that. Pretty sure it's 32-bit version but I'll check. Also I will test a liveCD ( great idea by the way) also I've tested my own laptop in that area more than once but I will re-test to see what's up. I just find it strange that it only goes when u do anything on LAN, and internet stuff is fine... but the next step is defo Live CD. only problem is that the adapter is USB but fedora / ubuntu or something will probly pick it up fine. I'll give it a go. Thanks again.
  2. Thanks for all your help guys. However it still isn't working for me. I've changed the channels on all 4 routers. 1,6,11 and 1 again The two with channel 1 are opposite ends of the building and their signal areas don't overlap. I've been doing some testing on the vista machine and it mostly seems to drop when I do something on the LAN, web and email is fine.... how I've been testing it is to go to \\nameofserver - which is a PC on the LAN with a printer attached, it's ok when I 'run' to that location. but when I click open or connect on the printer it usually drops then. a simple disconnect and reconnect works fine but it shouldn't really go down because of this ? I've turned off the windows 'firewall' and for some strange reason now rather than it going down altogether when I click on the printer, the continuous ping test I'm running to an internet server only times out once. So I thought I had it sorted but it still seems to be going when I'm not around and I'm pretty sure it's not something the user is doing. Could it be disconnecting after a few minutes of non-activity ??
  3. Yeah I know vista sucks!!! :-D I'm having a really annoying problem with a new PC I installed for a small business. Basically, it's a wifi connection that keeps dropping (Vista). I've been doing ping tests to the DSL router and to a local university out on the interweb and they both time out when the drop happens. It's an Acer PC (Vista Home Premium, Phenom Quad core >2GHz, 2GB, 320GB HDD and I can't remember the spec in any more detail at the moment). And the wireless adapter is a Belkin F507050, Version =[v4003 uk]. This is a USB Wireless G adapter It's Atheros based if that's of any help. It's a hotel and the connection is unsecured as they don't want to worry about giving out WEP / WPA keys etc. Please don't give me a lecture about security / sniffing / whatever - I've tried to tell them but they're the client and whatever they say goes. I've setup a static IP address on the adapter (192.168.1.10) with a standard class C subnet (255.255.255.0) - just like the rest of the network. The default gateway (ADSL router) is 192.168.1.1 And for DNS, it's using OPENDNS. Any laptops etc that I have tried on the wireless get 100% uptime so I'm pretty sure it's not the Access points or the DSL router or the ISP. I tried disabling IPv6, BOTH Link-Layer Topology Discovery Protocols, even QoS (clutching at straws) None of these things made a difference. The 4 Access points are TP-LINK TL-WA501G http://www.tp-link.com/products/product_des.asp?id=36 They all have the same SSID + Channel and seem to work fine with other machines. I don't know if this is any use, but I did a 'netsh wlan show interfaces' Name : Wireless Network Connection Description : Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter GUID : 3fc5d979-deleted for security reasons Physical Address : 00:1c:df:deleted for security reasons State : connected SSID : deleted for security reasons BSSID : 00:23:cd:deleted for security reasons Network Type : Infrastructure Radio Type : 802.11g Authentication : Open Cipher : None Connection Mode : Profile Channel : 11 (I have also tried 6) Receive Rate (Mbps) : 54 Transmit Rate (Mbps) : 54 Signal : 80% Profile : deleted for security reasons I'm not in that building at the moment but I did do a 'netsh wlan show drivers' and forgot to email it to myself. I did however notice that the driver was in C:\windows\oem so I think it's using Microsoft WHQL drivers or whatever u call them. When installing, I did put the disk in but I think there were only XP drivers on that disk anyway so when I hit automatic install, vista did whatever (it doesn't tell you) and it looked to install fine. Had a look on belkin.com and couldn't find vista drivers for this bit of kit. But it's hardly a driver issue ? is it ? Anyhow, Maybe somebody has had a similar problem. Any help is very much appreciated. P.S. If it was me, I'd just buy XP Pro on ebay (as I did for my own machine)
  4. ah. I didn't realise that I just thought I was being dim. ah well. at least I know what to do

good point. completely forgot synctoy. i use that to keep backups of websites I do on my USB stick, among other things. Does anyone know if synctoy is scriptable by command line? or would u have to do an autohotkey / autoit job on it ?

I would use 7-zip (command line version) - that way you can compress the files too. if you need them to be not compressed (for speed) you could just make a non-compressed archive. I can't remember the exact parameters but if this sounds like it would be of any use, let me know and I'll upload my script when I get home (don't have it with me). However if you want the files to be just files, and don't want to have to un-archive them later, I would try XXcopy [http://www.xxcopy.com] - this obviously depends if you're using your script to do backups or for some other reason. Wanna give us some more info so we can help more ? of course there's probably a way to do it with normal copy or xcopy but that would probably be os-dependent and seeing as I don't know whether you're running this on one OS or multiple (or even what your OS is for that matter), I've done a bit of guessing. Rant over.
  7. lol good luck with that... I've tried that with nlite a few times and it worked once or twice only (to be honest I probably had the wrong drive file or something). Anyway, the F6 mode is definitely the most likely to work [if you have a floppy drive + disk that is.] The only problem is figuring out exactly which driver to use. some inf setups have 5 or 6 drivers but usually a bit of googling about your motherboard and you'll know which one to use. Or good old trial and error. :-D
  8. ah, my email settings are sorted now - "My Controls" hmmmm I thought I had done that already
  9. Thanks for all the posts guys. for some reason I didn't get an email telling me there were replies. I'll look into smoothwall QoS as I have installed smoothwall before and have an idea how it works. a quick search reveals this mod: http://community.smoothwall.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7922 so I'll look into that also. I'd love to get to grips with iptables but I'm not sure I have the time to learn it at the moment. As for linksys + DD-WRT / tomato - I've already got the hotel to buy a TP-LINK switch and TP-LINK wifi AP (both very cheap chinese models but they do the job nicely) - so I'm not sure if I could now get them to buy extra kit. but if anybody has experience with tomato QoS and stability (over 10 users at a time) I'd like to hear it.
  10. I was wondering is there a linux distro that you could install on a machine with two nics for bandwidth shaping/throttling or whatever it's called. (a bit like the way smoothwall works) - I do a bit of work for a hotel here in Ireland and they have a DSL line (7Mb down,784Kb up) and now and again they have speed problems surfing hotel sites etc. which is an essential part of their business, and their I.T. company based elsewhere has trouble logging in via logmein etc. and after some quick investigation I found out that they give free wifi and wired internet access to their customers and it's all on the same line!!! They're all on one LAN and they're trying their best to not get a second line in due to the current economic climate. There were speed issues yesterday for example and I did some checking with wireshark (learned nothing as I don't think I know how to use it properly) and I got a trial version of PRTG traphic graffer and I found out that nobody was taking the bandwidth at the time (although I think I got there just a few minutes too late) - the local pings to Dublin (30miles) went back to 50ms, which although terrible by US standards, was ok. when the speed issues were there we had pings of 500ms and above... Anyway, to get back to the point, I was wondering if there is some software or a linux distro that can be used to allow certain IPs more bandwidth than others, and/or prioritise HTTP traffic or block P2P, and I could put this "router" PC between the ADSL router and the LAN switch ???
  11. On a similar note, I was wondering is there a linux distro that you could install on a machine with two nics for bandwidth shaping/throttling or whatever it's called. 12. Thanks everyone for your ideas etc. I've found that autohotkey does the job for the time being. Doing the stuff I used to use autoit for. Anyway I'm seriously considering doing a college course in software development soon but for the moment, I'm going to keep it simple. Thanks again.
  13. Thanks guys. would have replied sooner but was expecting an email to tell me I had replies. I'll fix my profile now. Thanks again. Anyone else have an opinion on this?
  14. a quick n00b question. Is SSL email as easy to break as SSL web traffic is? It's just that my company deals with sensitive client information and they're talking about sending that sort of info via email if we start ussing SSL certified email or whatever. I was under the impressions it's still very insecure, even with SSL. Thoughts ?
  15. Hi to all, I was just wondering how anyone here would go about creating simple console apps for windows. All I would need to be able to do would be maybe some simple text manipulation, maybe some basic n00b TCP stuff, it would be great if I could do some DB stuff, perhaps SQLite??? Anyway I've done a bit of VB in the past but all this DOT NET stuff is confusing for a n00b like me. also I'd like to do something with free software, mainly because I'm a bit poor at the moment. The main reason for this post is because we have a logon script at work here (Batch) and I have it calling multiple types of scripts, VBS, AUTOIT exes, Freebasic EXES, all written by me for reporting on each PC on our network and some using other peoples software also. I would like to clean it all up to make it all one script for simplicity and so it's easier to remove some of the stuff that's out of date because there's way too much going on at the moment. I'm considering KiXtart but I'm not sure it will be any better. I'm a big fan of PHP + MySQL and I'm getting to grips with both of those languages fairly well. I like the way PHP just works without being too strict. It's easy to write functions and I'm slowly starting to understand OOP almost because the way PHP handles it is just so easy. It's just a pity PHP can't be used to create simple EXEs Also in the past I've used AUTOIT v3 to do a lot of my scripting here but lately it's giving a lot of vague errors on windows 2000 machines even though it works fine on our XP machines here..I need something that just works!!!.... I suppose I could just clean up the scripts manually like I used to but it just seems very inefficient. P.S. I've also seen these PHP "compilers" lately and I was wondering if any of them are worth trying: ZZEE PHPExe Priadoblender
  16. Thanks for that Sparda. At least I know I'm better off plugging it in now instead. Would anybody have a recommendation - DD-WRT or TOMATO firmware ??
  17. Hi digip I see you didn't have any replies about this but you found webforce. now I know this was a while back but I was wondering if you had any luck because I'm in a very similar situation to you now and I could do with some ideas. Might just download webforce and have a look but can you tell me if there any pitfalls or is it relatively straight-forward?? I have done a few PHP + MySQL sites now and I should be able to do a whole cart myself but it would take me ages and ages. so is webforce the one for me?? [edit]Oh crap I just realised. this webforce is Object-oriented so it's probly only for PHP5 and above. My server has only got PHP4... oh well I'll just have to look for another one[/edit]

  19. Hi all, I have a couple of quick questions.... waaaaaaaay back in Season 3 Wess did a mod on a WRT54G to get it to run on power from a Cat5 cable. I was wondering if anybody could tell me if this will run off an Original XBOX ethernet port? also will the port that's being used for power still work for data, i.e. Will I be able to power it from the XBOX and still be able to route wifi into it if I set-up the router as a bridge? Because as u may already have guessed I'm trying to cheap out on buying an original xbox wifi adapter I've ordered a WRT54G on ebay and am considering installing either DD-WRT or tomato. But I suppose it's possible I won't need either just to use it as a wireless ethernet bridge ? I can just use the plug if needed but it would be nice to have it run from the XBOX power. Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? Any help is much appreciated. [edit] P.S. my current router is 3-Com and I'm not sure if I can setup the wrt54g as a wireless ethernet bridge to connect to the 3-Com one?[/edit]
  20. Hi all, I was wondering if anyone has any (windows) scripts or apps that can do any of the following? List printer drivers and which queues are actually using them (We are trying to clean up one of our servers) List printer drivers and their install dates and or created dates Find Corrupt printer drivers? Any of the above I have googled for VBS answers etc. and coming up short. There might be a couple of C alternatives or C++ but I suck at those languages big time. Why can't windows run on PHP? it would be so much easier then :-) anyhow sorry for such a noobish question but I'm really lost on this. We have 3 Presentation 4.0 servers here and 12 in another location. Our users run a system on the farm of 12 and the funniest part of it all is all 15 servers involved have different print drivers, different versions of software, different open ports etc. etc. and they're supposed to be identical. I almost fell off my chair laughing when I heard they were so disparate. But that's my company for you. (Public Service) anyway I have my work cut out for me lol. Anyone who has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate them. Thanks p.s. I just found this VBS script: strComputer = "ourserver" Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:" _ & "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2") Set colInstalledPrinters = objWMIService.ExecQuery _ ("Select * from Win32_PrinterDriver") For each objPrinter in colInstalledPrinters Wscript.Echo "Configuration File: " & objPrinter.ConfigFile Wscript.Echo "Data File: " & objPrinter.DataFile Wscript.Echo "Description: " & objPrinter.Description Wscript.Echo "Driver Path: " & objPrinter.DriverPath Wscript.Echo "File Path: " & objPrinter.FilePath Wscript.Echo "Help File: " & objPrinter.HelpFile Wscript.Echo "INF Name: " & objPrinter.InfName Wscript.Echo "Monitor Name: " & objPrinter.MonitorName Wscript.Echo "Name: " & objPrinter.Name Wscript.Echo "OEM Url: " & objPrinter.OEMUrl Wscript.Echo "Supported Platform: " & objPrinter.SupportedPlatform Wscript.Echo "Version: " & objPrinter.Version Next and it works to show driver files so maybe I'll modify it to find out modified date for the files themselves but I'm not sure how effective / accurate that would be. Thanks again for reading my long post.

    GTA4

My order says "in progress" so I'm hoping I'll have it for the 29th! Although it's not too likely with the Irish postal system :-P And I have to wait for the Irish slowness brigade to connect my broadband since I moved house (waiting a few weeks now) !!! Would you believe I get charged €66 per month which is about a hundred us dollars just for phone service + 3Mb ADSL with 384k upload???? And that's cheap for this country... mores to the point how come 2Mb is the average over here? Why can't we have what the Belgians have for example???? Ok rant over. GTA IV is gonna rock!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't waitz!!
  22. As I said before I know about the changing the registry thing but I just wanted something simpler and less dependent and nircmd seems to do the trick. I suppose I really should learn C and make my own apps lol... Thanks for all your help everyone.
