The weird thing is that it seems to just be incredibly dim, as if only half of screen went out. So, my question is: What do I need to do? Is it a replaceable light or a permanent problem? Thanks for your time. Sound sliek you just have a burnt out back light if you can still see some of the screen. They aren't too hard to replace and only take a few minutes,although I have enver done one personally, I watched someone do it in a couple of minutes. Even a whole screen can be replaced fairly quickly once its pulled apart, but if you don't feel comfortable with doing it yoruself, try to find someone who knows how and ask them to show you. Save yourself the money from taking it to some place liek BestBuy, etc... Oh, and if you do take it to a store, remove the HDD. cooper Posted December 26, 2007 Share Posted December 26, 2007 I can't think of any other reason except the burnt out backlight. An alternative would be to set her up with an external monitor. If she's into My Little Pony I doubt she takes the lappy along with her when she goes anywhere, so the loss of portability wouldn't be too much of a hassle. I, like probably many geeks around here, take care of a number of PCs scattered throughout the family tree. If any of them ever gave me that type of lip, I'd tell them to fix it themselves. If Compaq doesn't offer a repair at a sensible price, you may want to try finding a new screen in its entirity, as taking the screen apart isn't going to be an easy task. moonlit Posted December 26, 2007 Share Posted December 26, 2007 I'm going with dead backlight too, that or a dead inverter... either way, if you're handy with a screwdriver then you might be able to get spares, either the right sized CCFL or a compatible inverter.
