daedalus
Hey. I recently got interested in 3D modeling and i'm looking for a place to start. Any suggestions for good modeling programs to use? I would prefer something free and fairly easy to use. I am booting only with linux right now, so a program native to that OS would be nice. Could someone point me in the right direction? daedalus

metatron
If you like Blender and 3D modeling it can be fun setting up your own cluster to speed up rendering.

Bah, books are for n00bs. I been using blender since before it had any features at all, and learned them as they were added. and pick up the GIMP (probably already installed) and Inkscape, they all work nicely together... sort of... well, its all open source, so I'm not guaranteeing anything, not even an expressed warrant of merchantability. VaKo
Lightwave is good, you might have to acquire it though. I just found its one of the easiest programs to learn 3d modeling in.
Nanob0t
In relevancy to Blender. I just downloaded the program and I got a decent way through the tutorial and it all makes sense. Problem is: I get nothing when I render 3D objects I create. I get a background and...... a background. I've searched on their FAQ and around google with minimal success. Any help? You have to make sure that you are rendering the right layer, its usually in the first layer (press the 1 key) if it isn't press the ~ key to render all layers. You may also need to add lights (space -> add -> lamp -> lamp).
Nanob0t
I tried it, but nothing works. Tried putting like 50 lamps, and using all layers, but nothing seems to allow me to render it. I just have a simple cube that I rounded the edges. It doesn't even allow me to render the default cube on the start page. Any help?
psychoaliendog
When you start blender there is a "DOS" window that pops up, does it say anything weird? other than: Compiled with Python version 2.4. Checking for installed Python... got it!
Nanob0t
Ah ha. It says python is missing >=( What do I do now?
daedalus
Sorry to intercede on the ongoing problem, but I have created my first independent render. The Phantom Slurpee Yes, I know it is quite chunky and rather unrealistic, but I thought I would show the first result of this thread. Thanks guys. daedalus

psychoaliendog
yeah, if installing python doesn't fix it. you might want to take this to the blender forums. It might be a graphics card problem, try updating your drivers, but I don't wish to keep hijacking this thread.
Nanob0t
Thanks for the help. I think Python was what was missing. I got this error and never really took note to it. It seems to be the error of the rendering. Sorry to intercede on the ongoing problem, but I have created my first independent render. Very nice job :o I have gotten to a pretty fancy cube thing, but stopped due to the lack of rendering. I want to see my pretty cube :(
moonlit
It's not 3D modelling, but it's easy to create 3D scenes in DAZ|Studio, it's quite a fun program to use, is free and is compatible with Poser and Bryce...
Nanob0t
Great! Thanks guys. I got the wrong version at first and I was about to delete the program. Just got it working now. nanob0t ---Later--- Nevermind. I got: Compiled with Python verson 2.4 Checking for installed Python... got it! Yet my blender program is still incapable of rendering a valid image. :?:
