Netowork Proxy

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Me and my good friend are trying to defeat the school's NO MSN by using trillian messenger portable on the school network. We only have one problem, how do we find out the school proxies? I know the Network Admin but he is being a complete wind-up about it and has told me to "go find them youself" so anybody know any programs I can stick on my USB Flash Memory to run and get me the proxies?

Regards once again,

Jimmy

Ask IE? We have no access to the Internet Settings and all registry viewing is banned which sucks. How can you "ask IE?"

And the Admin likes me a lot and knows that I could blow the network with a few clicks and we joke about computer stuff so I know he doesn't care if it is for "personal use"

<school admin rant>

Why in the hell do we have to see so many threads about how to get around the proxies and filters? Come on... Stupid or not, they are there for a reason. Most admins wether you think they are dumb or not, have some sort of fucking clue! Do your fucking chats/email/whatever at home or the public library. School is for learning; not for hacking past filters...

And while im ranting, learn to search forums here, google, ask.com, hell I'd even settle for MSN search. If you want to learn, learn how to do it by searching and learning how to properly weed through the results.

</school admin rant>

BTW, welcome to the Hak5 forums, but FFS, learn to search, please.

Honestly, if we jsut googled and searched forums for all solutions. forums would be useless to post in after a while.

Secondly, not all admins are intelligent. It's kinda hard to do homework when relevent sites are blocked. I mean Digg is bloacked as a newsgroup FFS.

Third, if you're caught, you WILL be suspended or possibly expelled. I was almost suspended for using Portable Firefox (off my USB drive) becuase "IE is the accepted standard".

Well thanks for the bollocking. Infact I had googled it, I just was gooogeling for the wrong thing so I came up with nothing I wanted. And I am intreeged by my school network. And I believe it is pretty insecure considering they have all the "secret info" stuck up on the wall in the server room. Sorry if this post has been done before but I needed a clear answer which lots of posts never seem to get (for obvious reasons). I will try what u lot have said at school tomoz and then get back on how it went. The only reason I am trying to run trillian portable is so that I can show the admin that he isn't so clever afterall. Infact, me and my friend have changed about 50 computers so the "Start" bar says... "Haha, Mr _________ OWNED". I know this may sound immature but it was worth it. He didn't even give me anything like detentions - he just told me to put them all back to the old exporer.exe's which i never did, i just was a complete suckup and changed them to the name of our skool.

There's topics that have been beaten to death that we KNOW are really, really easy to find on Google (or your favourite search engine). People don't bother, they just head to a forum, in this case us, and expect to be spoon-fed exactly the kind of stuff that we think is a complete waste of time or stuff that's easily found on Google.

Filters are present for a reason... School facilities are there to enable you to complete your school work, not to read the latest Digg story or go play Yahoo Pool or warez some movies.

Sure, some admins may not be aware of certain important sites that are banned but shouldn't be, but maybe you might want to try talking to them about it rather than trying to fight the protection. They'll be more willing to help you if you help them but if you get caught circumventing filters they'll (rightly) come down on you like a ton of bricks...

Lastly if you're going to be this dumb I hope you do get caught. Seriously, by doing this you risk losing your access to school computer facilities AT THE LEAST. You can be suspended or expelled for it too.

Ultimately this could (as much as you try to ignore it or think it doesn't matter) affect your WHOLE LIFE.

Think about it; you loose computing privileges... then you fail a class... then you don't have what you need for further education, then you don't have the paper to get that neat job, then you have no money, no house, no car, no booze or girlfriend either.

It sounds extreme but it can happen. I lost my ability to use school computers on many occasions and it made it VERY hard to complete my work and especially hard during a computing (IT or ICT) lesson... That led to me almost failing to reach the entry requirements for college which would mean I'd have very little going for me in terms of qualifications righ now if my first college hadn't been so forgiving.

So in short, don't do it. It's not worth it, it's not clever, it's not funny, it pisses off everyone here and it'll piss off your admin who CAN and WILL act on it.

Sorry for posting this in a second message but I didn't wanna make the last one any longer and I didn't see this before I posted it.

After reading this message I wonder how you can expect anyone to help you at all now... You actually intentionally tried to piss off the admin?! How dumb can you get?! You're not even skirting around the issue just doing things you're not supposed to, you're getting right to the point and TRYING to get suspended...

The point is not to try to take the admin down a peg or two, that's exactly the wrong way about it. If you think there's a vulnerability then speak to him about it, don't piss him off. If you piss him off he's even LESS likely to listen to you and even less likely to take you seriously...

Admins, as with any technical people, do not like to be proven wrong by an idiot but they're usually very open to suggestions on how to improve something but they will do what they can if you piss them off and they can do an awful lot if they choose to.

See the previous messages in this thread and stop being such an idiot.

God you lot are so persuasive and harsh! Now I feel like a n00b lol Oh and there is another long story behind the taskbar thing - he was kinda asking for it.

Ok, well I won't do anything. I am just going to ask the Admin about the topic of proxies (soon as I am interested anyways) and how the skool utilises them.

So thanks for putting things straight, I will have to find a slightly different project to work on!

Regards

Jimmy

I had a similar bollocking when I joined thinking that hacking was all black hat stuff and asked for people to help hack my school. Now I've reformed :) and no longer try to hack my school, you guys give some very good points as to why you shouldn't hack your school network, thanks for saving me before I got caught :D

While im not sure if I was one of the few who "set you straight" I will say you are welcome. I am very happy to read that you took our advice and learned from it.

run net stat or use process explorer and right click a internet program that work and usually you can find the proxy ports and the ip's but as most people here schools are smarter that that and have multiply method of stopping junk traffic so you are better of not trying and just get some web space and place a php chat script but like it said schools are smarter that that

Wow. I normaly do not post here but now I have to because I could not believe this one-sided peice of wrighitng right here.

First of all, you actualy know that schools do not really care about your education and more of how much money the faculty is paying off right? Also, if you look at the Six Founding Princibles of US Education they go as follows:

1) The adjustive or adaptive function. Schools are to establish fixed habits of reatcion to authority. This, of course, precludes critical judgement completely. It also pretty much destroys the idea that useful or interesting materials should be taught, because you can't test for reflexive obedience until you whether you can make kids learn, and do, foolish and boring things.

2) The integrating function. This might as well be called "the conformity function," because its intention is to make children as alike as possible. People who conform are predictable, and this is of great use to those who wish to harness and manipulate a large labor force.

3) The diagnostic and directive function. School is meant to determine each student's proper social role. This is done by logging evidence mathematiclly and anecdotally on cumulatice records. As in "your permanent record." Yes, you do have one.

4) The differentiating function. Once their social role has been "diagnosed," children are to be sorted by role and trained only so far as their destination in the social machine merits--and not one step further. So much for making kids their personal best.

5) The selective function. This refers not to human choice at all but to Darwin's theory of natural selection as applied to what he called "the favored races." In short, the idea is to help things along by consciously attempting to improve the breeding stock. Schools are meant to tag the unfit--with poor grades, remedial placement, and other punishments--clearly enough that their peers will accept them as inferior and effectively bar them from the reproductive sweepstakes. That's what all those little humiliations from first grade onward were intended to do: wash the dirt down the drain.

6) The propaedeutic function. The societal system implied by these rules will require an elite group of caretakers. To that end, a small fraction of kids will quietly be taught how to manage this continuing project, how to watch over and control a population deliberately dumbed down and de-clawed in order that government might proceed unchallenged and corporations might never want for obedient labor.

Long Story Short, school is not primaraly teach you knowlageable information. School is there to make you an obediant citicen, depending on the type of goverment in charge, that can mean vastly diffrent things.

Not to mention alot of schools are not runned very well. My schools amazing security system blocked NASA's hompage for a science project. NASA!!! I reported it to the admins, and they could not find a way around it. Finally, with there premission, I had to hack into the protection software in order to unblock the NASA homepage. Wow, amazing.

The point is not all school systems are supose to provide informative unbiased information for the perpous of seeking knowlage. Not to metion looking back at school, besides basic math and english, I had never used anything I have ever learned from middle school or high school in the real working world.

So yes, please stop being a robot and while you may dissagre with a person that you atleast know the other side of the story punk.

Because it's not narrow-minded at all for you to assume that all the posters on this forum are from the US.

The United States is one country, the internet is global. The rules you speak about have little impact in hundreds of countries (including mine, Australia). Regardless of how an individual school operates, a school by definition is an Educational Facility. It is primarily to educate. So to present such a naive argument as one of profound intelligence, you're merely showing immaturity.

I don't think many people take the "if you do this, you can have your PC access removed" speech seriously, but they should. After doing something I shouldn't have in Year 7, I almost had mine removed. Listen to your elders.

I finally dug up the effort to read your mammoth post and to be honest to some degree I see where you're coming from.

However it's apparent that kids aren't seeking knowledge, they're seeking MySpace and YouTube... I don't see that as a valid reason to bypass school filters which are there for a reason, whatever that reason my be. If it is within the power of an admin to help you access a site that is going to help you with a school project then a lot of the time they will.

I'm certainly not a 'robot' and nor am I a punk. I stand by the points I made because they are valid. If you do hack a school system you risk losing access to certain facilities that will allow you to complete your education and as a result you risk leaving school with those pieces of paper that allow you to get a better job that requires intelligence. That's not always the case I'll grant you and it isn't impossible to get a worthwhile job without them but why waste a chance on trying to look up porn or your latest blog comment?

I'm completely aware of the other side of the story as it happens. I've been there, I've seen what admins can do if they catch you doing something you're not supposed to be doing on a school computer. I can almost guarentee I've been banned from more schools' IT facilities than almost anyone on this board so I think I'm qualified to say what I've said.

Remember school facilities are not yours to do what you wish with they are school and/or government property (depending on where you are) and as such you may not use them as you see fit. You wouldn't suddenly decide to hire a car and use it to street race so why would you do this?

I understand that you disagree with certain aspects of the education system where you currently reside and you may even appear somewhat bitter that you're getting the bum deal but that's not the case for everyone.

Throw this in your address bar http://wpad.domain.tld/wpad.dat, where domain.tld is your schools domain. If you're not sure what to put there, and you can run an ipconfig, it will be listed as the DNS Suffex. See if you can figure that file out. Go here to start looking for more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_Proxy_Aut...covery_Protocol

If that file doesn't exist the problem will be a lot harder to solve. Good luck, and I hope you learn something about how auto proxy discover works. Keep in mind that even if you do find out how to get to the proxy server, your admin will most likely have firewalled off the ports for common IM protocols if he doesn't want you to use them.

Also, I assume they've filtered http://wwwl.meebo.com/

P.S. I am a punk.
