pseudobreed
On a side note, http://www.3dbuzz.com is a great place to pick up some new skills or just get the all around feel of an application.

psychoaliendog
Blender's interface is pretty much a GUI for OpenGL with a few extra features like video/audio/image editing, animation, and procedural textures. There are some lesser weight apps like Wings3D http://www.wings3d.com/. But blender is by far the most powerful one out there.
