Sebkinne
Hey guys! I have been busy working on new features for the upcoming firmware releases. One thing that keeps coming up and really bothers me is that people are having issues with Client Mode. As it is a vital function of the WiFi Pineapple MKV, I really want it to work for any type of network. This thread is an attempt to get to the bottom of the issues people are having. If you are having an issue, please reply to this thread while adhering to the guidelines below. If you do not, your post will be removed to keep this thread clean and constructive. I want to avoid comments such as "me too" or "WPA2 doesn't work". So, how can I help? First of all, make sure you are on the latest firmware version (1.0.4, not the beta) and that that all system infusions are up-to-date. Also, please make sure that you don't have the WiFiManager infusions installed. If you have had it installed previously you will need to completely remove it and then perform a factory reset. Yes, this is annoying but it can / might have changed some settings breaking our built in Client Mode. Please include the following information in your reply: Your AP's encryption type. OPEN/WEP/WPA/WPA2 - CCMP/AES or TKIP or Both An output of "ifconfig wlan1 up && iwlist wlan1 scan". This command needs to be run over SSH. Please only post the appropriate section for your network or tell us what the SSID is. NOTE: For the paranoid, you may change your BSSID / SSID and edit out all other wireless network the scan picks up. Just make it clear which part of the output is your network. When you select the network through the WiFi Pineapple MKV webinterface's Client Mode tab, before entering a password, what do you see? Does it show the AP as encrypted? What encryption mode does it say? Note: When you post your "ifconfig wlan1 up && iwlist wlan1 scan" output, please use the [/sPOLER] tags. --- I would already like to thank you all for your replies. If you do reply, please check back in a day or so - I might require further information. Let's get rid of this bug together. Best Regards, Sebkinne
Xcellerator
Alright! I'll start off this train, then!I'm using WPA2-Personal with AES.Here is the output of iwlist: wlan1 Scan completed :Cell 04 - Address: XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XXChannel:11Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11)Quality=70/70 Signal level=-37 dBmEncryption key:onESSID:"Xcellerator"Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s; 54 Mb/sBit Rates:6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s; 48 Mb/sMode:MasterExtra:tsf=00000028fe2c2a96Extra: Last beacon: 10ms agoIE: Unknown: 000B5863656C6C657261746F72IE: Unknown: 010882848B962430486CIE: Unknown: 03010BIE: Unknown: 2A0100IE: Unknown: 2F0100IE: IEEE 802.11i/WPA2 Version 1Group Cipher : CCMPPairwise Ciphers (1) : CCMPAuthentication Suites (1) : PSKIE: Unknown: 32040C121860IE: Unknown: 2D1AFD191BFFFFFF0000000000000000000000000000000000000000IE: Unknown: 3D160B001700000000000000000000000000000000000000IE: Unknown: 4A0E14000A002C01C800140005001900IE: Unknown: 7F0101IE: Unknown: DD090010180206F03C0000IE: Unknown: DD180050F2020101800003A4000027A4000042435E0062322F00 Only my AP is shown and I've hidden the MAC Address. In the Pineapple interface, it displays my AP as having the right encryption. However, when I type iwconfig, it claims that wlan1 is connected in managed mode to my SSID, although I get no replies from any ping requests and refreshing the network tab still shows "Wlan1 IP: n/a". This always happens after a reboot (complete power cycle). If I connect again through the web interface, "Connecting, please wait" spins indefinitely and doesn't ever stop. If I exit the page manually and refresh the network tab, it confirms I have an network IP address from my AP, and I get replies to ping requests. In other words, I can get Client Mode to work, but its buggy to get it running. THCMinister
Usually in the network tile, I can only see the AP provided by wlan0. Occasionally it will see my home AP. Once I try to establish a connection it's a hit or miss wether it connects. When it does connects and gets an IP, it acts as though it times out trying to access the internet for infusions/packages/etc. The wlan1 LED sporadically goes on and off with no rhyne or reason. Sometimes on for hours, other times a few seconds. I have reset the pineapple, removed infusions/etc. There is no pattern to progress with any order in which I do things. Hope this helps. I masked my AP MAC. You can see that it keeps losing association with the AP. I haven't changed the location of the pineapple. I decided to change my AP TX Power from 71 to 95. I have also changed the Wireless Security to WPA2 AES and set a high key renewal time. As I have heard that this may cause connection issues for some cards. After making these changes, the pineapples client mode seems to be working flawlessly. THCMinister
Update: i don't know if it means something, but i have to be really close to the AP so i can connect to it, so close as the lenght of the ethernet cable provided with the pineapple, and the connection is stablished only for a couple of minutes. I have recently moved my pineapple into close proximity to my router and have noticed that it no longer disconnects as it was before. The pineapple before was at 11 feet and now it is at 5 feet and no issues. I mean obviously closer to signal is always better but a matter of complete failure to 100% working due to 6 feet seems odd to me.

(https://hakshop.myshopify.com/products/sma-male-jack-to-rp-sma-female-adapter) Do you have Karma running? This may explain why you see you SSID 70 of 70 and Open Security. Just a thought. newbi3
I'm not sure if anyone has mention it or not but the interface does not have logic for hidden SSIDs at the moment, being able to specify the SSID or having a manual configuration mode would be a nice feature. THCMinister
@daredevil_g have you upgraded to 1.1.0? Are you still having issues?
THCMinister
Client mode isn't working again for me. I did a factory reset, no other infusions installed. Scanning with wlan1 Only shows the pineapple ssid from wlan0. It doesn't matter the distance near an AP. Closer/farther produces same result. The odd thing is when I fire up my android tethering, it detected it, it had to be within 3-4 feet. I have tried changing several of my APs encryption type and no change. daredevil_g
@daredevil_g have you upgraded to 1.1.0? Are you still having issues? @THCMinister, i just did a flash to 1.1.0 and i've already conected to my network. No problems, no issues at the moment. The signal quality is 70 of 70 and the strenght -30 and sometimes -40 Every time i load the Client Mode, recognizes all the networks arround. I like this update :D (y) No infusions instaled, i'll try installing ssl strip and tell you if anything goes wrong. Strange, Any ideas?
Sebkinne
Just a quick note, if anyone is using other antennas than the ones we shipped with the MKV (ie yagis, panel antennas, MKIV antennas), you will need an adapter. While it seems to fit, we use SMA connectors now and not RP-SMA connectors. Apart from that, THCMinister, sounds like your realtek chip is defective.. contact shop@hak5.org. Best Regards, Sebkinne
THCMinister
No problem. Thanks.
Alarial
I posted this in a separate thread, but I wanted to put this here in the official "fix client mode problems" thread. I was having client mode problems that I was eventually able to fix on my own. It required manual intervention and will likely require me to do it again if I use a different network. TL;DR: If your SSID has a plus sign (+), you have to manually edit /etc/config/wireless and fix the appropriate "option ssid" Networks that have a plus sign (+) write to /etc/config/wireless incorrectly. There is a space instead of the + and so wlan1 just dies and won't do anything. SSH'ing to the pineapple and manually updating the "option ssid" in /etc/config/wireless after you have chosen your network in the network box will fix the problem. This could potentially affect more than just SSID's with a +, but hopefully this is enough to at least start tracking it down.
