pimmpinit
Hey guys, I just bought a Alfa AP121U from eBay and realized it doesn't have a usb port in the listing or the pictures. Is this a new model or am I crazy? http://www.ebay.com/itm/310520124058?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 How does this effect me? Can I still use this model? Sebkinne
Well, you bought the ap121 (check the page again). No USB. It is possible that it will work, but you loose out on most features. I suggest you cancel your order.
pimmpinit
Thanks Sebkinne, I canceled my order and was refunded. Do you know of any other online retailer that sells the open source Alfa AP121U? I already have one from the HakShp but now I want to build one as a gift to my friend. pimmpinit
They have them on Amazon. I've looked high and low and can't seem to find any on amazon. I am finding the AP121 model not the AP121U model. I also tried to search for the Hornet-UB. http://www.data-alliance.net/servlet/-strse-642/Alfa-AP121U-802.11n-AP-fdsh-Router/Detail I have ordered from this company several times. They are legit. They seem to have the best price and everyone is linking to them. Thanks
aredsquare
I think this is the amazon listing you are looking for: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A8E4I42 I mistakenly bought one of these confusing it with a next-gen Alfa AP-51. Since I couldn't find a manual for it, or figure out how to make it use my ALFA adapter by itself, I had been using a Raspberry Pi to bridge the two. The model number is AP121U; If it really is possible to turn it into a wifi-pineapple somehow then maybe it wasn't a bad buy after all. If you bought the one from the Amazon link, you can indeed flash it with the Pineapple firmware. The only thing you will need is an appropriate serial cable (USB-UART 3.3v Adapter). Then you can follow these instructions - see the "Clean flash" section.
aredsquare
Thanks. After reading that and poking around a bit I ordered an adapter this morning on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009GXEF8A It looks like it should work for creating a pineapple and interacting with the raspberry pi somehow. Why did you not just get one with the CP2102 Chip on it. Like in the HakShop. -Foxtrot.
aredsquare
I haven't visited the hakshop in a bit and didn't think to check if they sold one. The amazon one was actually more expensive. Is the CP2102 chip needed? I read the clean flash instructions and yours was the first mention of it I saw.
Legomaniac
I don't mean to thread hijack too badly ... But I ended up with the usb-less model because I'm a noob. Going to try the clean flash method unless someone warns me it won't work. Will post results. Also wondering if usb mod would be possible. I can soldier. From the pictures looks like my board is missing a couple capacitors at the sub port end.
