  1. *spoken like Chris Rock...* I live FOSS, but there's FOSS, and there's FOSStards. And the FOSStards have got ta go. If your mamma was a FOSStard, she wouldn't bother buy you baby food and diapers, because tho do so would support companies that produce RFID tags and use proprietary inventory management systems. There comes a point where you got to say, pay the man and get some shit done. Life's too short to spend in your basement writing useless software all day and making 97 copies of the wheel. If you want to, do it because you enjoy it, and stop preaching. Let's be human about this. If you are a turbo babble FOSStard advocate, you're seriously a douchebag nerd. And that's different from being a smart and scientific contributor to society. Fo sure.
  2. This is more of a routing issue, not a firewall issue. Do something like this... # route add -host 192.168.1.12 gw <insert the IP of the default gw of ppp0 here> That changes the default gateway for that host only. then to open the firewall you'd want to do something like... iptables -A FORWARD -s 192.168.1.12 -i eth0 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -d 192.168.1.12 -i ppp0 -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT That should do it.
  3. A hot redhead. 22y/o. She was crazy too. Kept dead rabbits in her freezer to make stew.
  4. Usenet is worth the ~$15/month. IRC is for people that have goods to trade on fservs with ratios, etc. Prepare to spend a lot of time talking, and wasting time, and getting IP traced if you don't know how to mask it.
  5. I use Macro Express. http://www.macroexpress.com/download.htm It's not freeware though. FYI. But it's easy and powerful.
  6. Hardware necrophilia is a hard disease to break. At some point you need to realize that it's time for your old friend to die. If old men became immortal, their old ideas would hold back the human race. At some point you just have to "let go". I know it's hard, as I still have a sick love for the old 286 that I used to play Sim-City on, and keyed my first DOS commands... Long dead, I keep its memory alive by carrying a 2MB SIMM on my keychain to remind me of my old friend. It's a sickness and you may need professional help.
  7. I'm highly OS agnostic, and I usually have 2-3 computers running a mix of every operating system that runs software not available on another operating system. Software rules. I follow.

    Linux top 5

I agree that community support is the #1 decision factor when picking a distro. But there are reasons to choose different ones based on speciality. Here's my selection... Ubuntu - Best distro for home desktop use and want something that just works without too much tinkering. Debian Stable - Solid for server use, with good support. I use a clean install (no gui) for a lot of my firewalls. Fedora/Redhat Enterprise - When you have commercial linux software or support needs (like when your company's backup solution requires it) If you're just trying stuff out, live CD/DVDs are awesome. I recommend... Knoppix Backtrack 3 - for security/forensic type work If you really want to learn a hell of a lot, and have lots of time to tinker with, break/fix things... best to brew your own distro following a guide from a site like... http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/
  9. Turbolinux 1.0, and Redhat 4.2. I remember seeing the ping of death exploit and that changed my view of security and hacking forever.
  10. I tend to like Debian. Backtrack3 comes in handy. I love to see smart peoples homebrew setups, always gives me great ideas. I don't like Fedora 9, it seems I always have extreme difficulties in doing simple things like configuring the network. Frustrates me to the point of not using it, because I don't have as much time to waste these days.
  11. I'm OS agnostic, because I think that the most important aspect of any OS is the software that it runs. Therefore, I do not choose a specific operating system. I switched from PCs to Macs, because they can run almost anything. OS X Native, Windows via bootcamp, Linux/Win via Vmware fusion. That means the fewest software limitations = win. Worth the Mac tax, in my opinion.
  12. I use social engineering in online games to scam people out of their pretend stuff, or mess up their pretend lives.
  13. After reading this, I feel (conditionally) sorry for that girl. If this were me, it would all depend on her personality. If she's a nice person, tell her the truth. If she's a hosebeast, then cut her off like a bad mole. But I 2nd Xarf's post. Just tell her you're not ready for a relationship, because you want more shallow sex with other girls. This usually works fine.
  14. For those of you asking for respect, you must be new to the internets. :)
  15. I listen to Trance. I highly recommend... The Thrillseekers Armin Van Buuren Paul Van Dyk Underworld BT http://www.tranceaddict.com/
  16. I should've known people here would be anime fans. One Piece deserves a mention.
  17. Do you have a bluetooth device that would catch mouse input? I had this issue one time when my keyboard was randomly typing 7's. I had a wireless keyboard that I wasn't using at the moment, and it had an ethernet cable laying on the 7 key.
  18. With the advertising and audience, it may has well have started out there. I'm sure they've been hankering for new techie content ever since their defunct podcast thebroken stopped releasing new episodes. I was always more entertained by that one, not to say that hak5 isn't informative, it's just not as entertaining. I vote good.
  19. I spent years trying to drill the very basics into my head and it eventually got me married. Most typical women don't think about these things. They do whatever their emotions tell them to do at the time. Ladies, I'm not saying this goes for all of you, just generalizing here. I realize there are those that don't fit the stereotype. Swooping in under the radar can be very effective. Find a reason to be alone with a lady, break out the candles, wines, hot tubs, massages, etc... not saying you need to do this, some women will be happy just chilling renting a movie, and having a good laugh... focus on an activity that is completely de-stressing. Getting her extremely comfortable with you is the key, then simply wait for natural urges to hit. Whether or not those urges will hit honestly depends on the day, and amount she has been getting in the recent past, hormone levels, time of the month, etc etc. Asking a girl out or putting connotations on future dating prospects between you and her is a big no no, especially for geeks. Can't stress this enough. I call it moment engineering. Also, the girls know that you are doing this, but if they are having a good enough time, they don't care. Like I said, they do whatever their emotions tell them to do at the time. For more on the philosophy behind this kind of style and someone who does it way better than I do, check out mystery method... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystery_method
