  1. Thats basically what i meant tom. You can charge for it but you cannot force people to buy it as the only means of obtaining it. What I mean is that if you use the linux kernel you are free to charge for it so long as you provide the opportunity for people to obtain it for free somewhere, source code included.

You don't have to offer it for free, aslong as the person buying it can get the source.

  2. TRAITOR!!!! INSTALL TIGER!

blasphomey. run linux on a mac. what next? 6ghz processors ;)

    EDIT:

    yellow dog costs money... http://ydl.net/

no it doesnt. Yellow dog is free. You are free to buy it if you would like. It is illegal for a company to use the linux kernel and charge for it. They have to provide it free somewhere.

Wrong, you can sell it aslong as you offer the person the chance to obtain the source code to the distro.

  3. Because Open Source is better.

    Cleaner and more reliable code.

How do you know the closed source code is not cleaner or less reliable if you cannot see it?

I get the feeling most people think it's the "cool" thing to do running open source software these days.

  4. I suppose that it would be futile to point out that if you are building say gentoo from stage one you are essentially building your own distro. A distro is just the kernel with a bunch of software to accomplish a specific task or set of tasks.

Building, maintaining, and marketing a distribution is a huge undertaking.

Building and maintaining nUbuntu doesn't take much effort.

  5. you can compile your own kernel to incorporate drivers and such, but making your own distro is just plain stupid, unless your apple, which I highly doubt.

    GOOGLE: howto compile kernel

    I'm stupid?
