  1. Nice to meet another school admin, manuel_l :) How to get round the filters really depends on the setup. Which you havn't really provided much information about. The schools that I work in all run through an off-site filtering system, meaning that I cannot unblock sites. So talking to Techs / Teachers to get a site unblocked may not work, even if they agree to it. If your school's setup is ok, there is probably everything but port 80 (for web traffic) closed. And there will most likely be group policies in place to stop you from changing the proxy settings. In short: I'm not gonna help someone get around school restrictions. When I was at school, I did it because I was curious; because I wanted to learn. Not because I wanted to go on myspace or watch porn.
  2. I have an idea... I hearby proclaim this thread's topic changed to: "What laptop do you own/use, and what are your likes and dislikes about it?" :P
  3. I completely agree. I used to hate Dell machines... And the idea of buying one. But even for desktops: it's getting to the point where it's very hard to buy components and build a machine of the same quality and performance, but for the same price, as a dell machine. I was almost certainly going to go for a Dell... But then a ton of people recommended Acer. I really need to find somewhere I can try out lots of different laptops. But that can be a pretty hard thing to do, esspecially for Dell  I usualy wouldn't be so indecisive, but because it's for uni, this laptop is going to have to last me for 4 years. I'm really not going to be able to afford to replace or upgrade while I'm on a student budget. Thanks again for everyone's advice :)
  4. Thanks guys :) I'll hopefully be able to disable things. I'm torn between Dell and Acer at the moment... It's a tough choice ;) Thanks again
  5. Right, I know compativiely little about laptops... I've always been a full tower kinda guy, but I'm moving out for uni and I'm going to be really pushed for space. I've decided I need a laptop, and I'm leaning towards a Dell 640m with a few of the added extras (1gb ram for one). Anyway... Back to the point... Is there anyway to disable the trackpad click? By that I mean: the ability to left-click by tapping the surface of the track pad. I've been using a borrowed old acer laptop, and it's so damn irritating when my thumb touches the track pad and selects a different window or a different section of the piece of code I'm working on etc. As I don't have the laptop yet, I'm unable to poke about in the settings... So if anyone could tell me if there is an option, workaround or a hack to disable the trackpad click, I would be extremely happy! Thanks
  6. Depends on what you call "a decent installer"... I love the slackware installer. The amount of times I've had problems with graphical installers and my obscure hardware is just silly. Just because it doesn't look pretty doesn't mean it's not easy to do. Slackware was one of the first distros I ever installed. It was easy enough, and I learnt more about configuring linux that I have done from any other distros.
  7. When I saw "I almost got killed today" posted by "wetelectric" my first thought was one of irony :P
  8. Firstly, it's VERY unlikely. Mainly because someone would have noticed by now. And secondly, what would you like to know about ethereal? :?
  9. 1. Because man holes are round, as suggested 2. So they don't fall in?
  10. They are just two of tripplets? or Quadruplets? Or Quints? Or $NumberOfKids++; ?
  11. Texts used to be the way of the hacker... Non of this IPTV and podcasting crap
  12. Thanks for your continued advice. I'd allready gone and got the resouce kit, tried ntrights... It didn't work. I figured I might try again though. Uninstalled and re-installed the resource kit, and it works! Woo! Now I can go about getting rid of this irritating little bit of spyware! Thanks a lot, guys :) I'd still love to know why I was having problems before though :?
  13. Thanks for your replys :) I've tried adding a group, as suggested. Still no joy. I've tried the built in administrator account too. I also tried making a new account with admin privileges. No luck :( As for the ID thing... No, I don't think Windows does have anything like that :P
  14. Right, here's my problem and what I've done so far... I'm trying to run a program from sysinternals called Filemon (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html), which requires Debugger privileges in order to run. My system is running Windows XP, SP2. Everything is fully up to date. My user account is in the Administrators group and I still get the "Your account does not have the debug programs privilege" error. I added user account to the "debugger Users" group in Computer management > system tools > local users and groups > users. But, after a restart, the error still remained. I tried it the other way round and went to groups and added my user that way. Still nothing. So I went into the local security policy (secpol.msc) and added my user account to the "Debug programs" policy in Local policies > User Rights Assignment > Debug programs. I restarted for the changes to take effect, and my user accout was no longer in the Debug Programs policy. I tried again and the same thing happened. I've also tried to use an application called "Unlocker", that requires debugger privileges. I get simaler errors with that. Also, the Filemon and Unlocker applications work fine on my laptop (XP Home, SP2), so I'm ruling out the application as being the problem. Any ideas? I've spent hours trying to figure this out today, and it's really starting to get to me :?
  15. Hmmm... I see flaw. I'm pretty sure a certain Mr Gates realises people are going to use his operating system to hack and crack their way into things. They really need to make it more specific
  16. Well THAT is certainly NOT Unix
  17. Sure sure ;) Just after I posted the answer I realised I had a PM from tabath from a few hours before hand. He's the only person to get it! So well done to tabath. A big round of applause, and... stuff? You win a piece of GNU licensed software of your choice Seriously... If I come up with another puzzle, I'll think of a little prize of some sort :)
  18. Alright. I'll let you all know. It was pretty mean afterall, I guess :) SPOILERS: "Trust your technolust"... I thought someone would have got it just from counting chars, which is why I put it all on one line to start with. I'm pretty sure it's not something you will have not come accross before. It's morse code of a 2 char shift. The sneaky bit being that the dots are represented by lower case letters and the dashes are represented by upper case letters. The idea being that everyone gets completely thrown of the scent by focusing too much on the letters themselves. I actually thought melodic had it when he asked about the capital letters. So to round up... trust -> two char shift = rpsqr rpsqr -> morse code = .-. .--. ... --.- .-. .-. .--. ... --.- .-. -> caps / lowercase = vGy eWWa wux WLaR xAq Sorry if it was a little hard, guys :)
  19. Still no correct answers :P Remember... Send them on the back of a postcard, as we do not open envelopes. I think another clue is in order! So here you go... It's three words: vGy eWWa wux WLaR xAq nPL SA lty sVCb nDe YbXl oO cxNb bDnm GS eWES bng NGeG zEn Maybe I made it a little too hard? :?
  20. Ah, to hell with it... I'm not sure it needs any photoshopping
  21. Yup :) That's the last clue though. PM me the answer when you get it so it doesn't ruin it for everyone else ;)
  22. Nothing too taxing for the likes of you lot, I should think :) What does this say? vGy eWWa wux WLaR xAq nPL SA lty sVCb nDe YbXl oO cxNb bDnm GS eWES bng NGeG zEn PM me the answer and I shall announce who got it first :)
  23. Glad to hear you got things sorted :) Knoppix can be a saviour
