    Hello!

It's good to see you're interested in computers, but you really need to learn alot before doing anything. The last thing the world needs is another script kiddie trying to run push button exploits with no knowledge of what their doing or the consequences of their actions. Check out the sticky thread at the top of this forum for all kinds of links of places to go to start understanding the principles of hacking. Do your homework! It's going to take alot of time, effort, and reading.
  3. Absolutely, I’d love to stick this in the wiki. Go ahead and stick it if you can and i'll keep editing it as it grows. Like I mentioned earlier, the focus of this thread will be a "getting started" kind of thing, and in the wiki we can put the more detailed information and links to all kinds of different sites.
  4. That was funny, wonder when it was made?
  5. Maybe once we get it edited down to a nice thread we'll have Darren make it sticky (he's the one that suggested we start a thread like this) and then we'll stick up a more detailed article in the wiki. I think it's important to have this in here, should help answer some of the n00bish questions from people who don't have a clue what their doing.
  6. We're assembling quite a large libarary of links, thanks guys! It's already almost to the point where it needs to be cleaned up. I just want to make sure that we keep the focus on people who are new to the scene and not focus to much on all the different details. Maybe i'll make posts further down like an appendix and point to those for more details.
  7. Thanks for the addition, I stuck it in the top post. Once it gets a little bigger I'll try to clean it up and organize it more.
  8. I went ahead and started one, i'll do my best to keep it up to date as people contribute to it. http://hak5.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=913
  9. For all the people who are new at this whole “computer†thing and don’t really understand what hacking is all about and where to begin, I offer up these links to some great places to start learning. Please contribute to this thread and I will keep it up to date. Probably should be made sticky. If you have the time or motivation, go back and listen to them from day 1, they assume you know very little if anything and hit on all of the major topics in the security field. Fantastic show. 10. I can identify with him. I've talked to people about 20 times more useless when it comes to their PC. Worth the listen, but i've herd / read a ton of these types of thigns online. One of my all time favorites is the lady who requested a new cupholder because hers broke.
  11. That's a really vague question. Since you're asking it, i'm going to assume you probably know very little if anything about how networking / computers / security works. I suggest doing some research, get some books ,read articles online, etc. Your question can be equated to this: I know the person's address, can I break into their house?
  12. I've never had any of the resource problems mentioned in this thread about Azureus. And the updates are well worth it, especially the last couple versions because they support torrent encryption which will often result in better download speeds. My roommate tried uTorrent for awhile, but then permanently switched to Azureus.
  13. Are you just using XBMC to watch video files and play music and the like? MythTV is primarily used as a PVR so you can record and watch TV shows. That's my primary use for it, but I also use it to play video files and do stuff like check the weather or my Netflix queue.
  14. What kind of hardware do you have that myth can't work with? It works quite well with virtually everything out there right now, I haven't heard of alot of problems after the last updates.
  15. That little bit about the technology behind the hidden cameras is pretty interesting. One of the IPTV shows should try and get a tour of a set like that, like Systm, FTS, or (of course) Hak5.
  16. I wanted to play with photoshop, and photoshoping a hott girl is a lot less boring then doing something inanimate like a random pic or a wall. Makes for good eye candy. BTW, it's Lexa Doig from Andromeda / Stargate SG-1 / some other random movies.
  17. No, MythTV wasn't bought out by anyone, nor will it ever be. It's a wonderful open source media center program, I built mine about a year ago and can hardly live without it. Hell, I watch Hak5 on it. Download on the PC, then transfer it over to Myth (or stream it) and watch it on a nice TV. If you're interested in building your own, I really recommend going over to www.mysettopbox.tv and checking out Knoppmyth. Fantastic installer program that takes all the guesswork out of configuring your own system and offers plenty of configurability. Now that I look, they've come out with a new version within the last couple days... time to upgrade perhaps....
  18. Here's the link.... recently got bored and started playing with photoshop to make them: Current BG Playing with reflections Same as cave, black BG
  19. In that case yes, MythTV. Fantastic media center, and free ;)
  20. What do you mean by "media center" ? Like a full home theater setup, or a MythTV / TiVo?
  21. This was bound to happen eventually, just a matter of time. Still a fantastic service.
