  1. Yeah........I agree...............I nearly posted a poll on asking peeps opinions on sausage with marmalade or ketchup...............whats theie fav? Please stop me from posting polls like this by putting a min 5000 post limit before your allowed :-P

  2. I'm looking at developing a home automation system , its just in its initial planning stage at the moment, but basically the control interface would be graphical , maybe using a browser........the hardware would include things like X10 controls and a 1-wire system with associated controls.

It would include to start with automation of heating system with weather compensation(along with monitoring of energy useage), lighting and appliance control, security cameras/alarms and maybe media. It would all be accessible remotely away from home and I'm looking to wrap it all up as an app running on one box, maybe with a NAS/Media server as an extra add-on.

The only thing out there like this that I have found so far is an open source project called Mister House developed in Perl and I'm thinking of maybe using this as a starting point( well it gives me an excuse to learn Perl!).

First, does anybody  with Perl programming have any recommendations for texts or web tutorials?

Is anyone interested in getting involved in a project like this?

  3. expensive wtf most things can be made, downlaoded or found for free and if yor strapped for cash you could do the free tacks

Yeah you could do the free tasks, no prob but off the top of my head without even going back to look at the list how many peeps on here have a radio scanner?in the UK at least I belive hand helds are about £70 upwards. A fair bit of money for something u are not likely to use a lot.

I really should do my research properly - sorry! you can buy scanners realy cheap off ebay (UK) for £13 - don't know if they're suitable for the task though as I have no experience .

  4. This seems like a good deal from expansys. The thing runs on linus so is very hackable and various utils including security stuff is already available for it. Could be a good option for a spot of wardriving/cycling(lol) but as I haven't got one yet I can't comment on how good its wifi is.

  5. Yes would love belgium. Why? yes for the beer- you are bang on djoek - the one thing Belgium does better than most. I would suggest though that most could not afford this. Perhaps see where most of the people wanting to attend are and go with that? Also august is closed season for uni's so maybe if your looking for somewhere with cheap digs and somewhere to hold it that might be feasable?

  6. I think the options for the vote should have included "might" as I might go depending on the location and work commitments. Maybe its best to get an idea of the numbers who might or would like to go and their locations then go from there?
