  1. Had some issues last night with my wifes gmail account, had somehow been hacked and emails sent out(containg links) to all contacts in her gmail address book AND all contacts in her work Outlook address book. Obviously the work related stuff is quite serious as she works for a large multinational............BUT none of her work contacts are saved in her gmail contact list and in fact she has only ever sent email to 2 of her work contacts from her gmail account.

She has access to her works email and intranet by way of a citrix VPN using a security keyfob number generator. Our home network is behind a router with all ports in and out nailed down and monitored, I regularly run all the usual anti stuff and all the usual security precautions are taken. Shes just been on the phone to me from work having had her help desk bod with her and he said it must have been from our end ( the companies) and happened when you were logged into the intranet from home! I said to the wife I thought that very unlikely, if the companies network has been compromised internally why then hack her google account to send emails instead of just sending them from her company email account -the only other option I can see is the company has standardised on blackberries for mobile access to email, maybe theres a weakness there. Just before the emails were sent from her account google recorded a login from a mobile device in france - obviously not my wife.

anyone had anything siilar or any thoughts? Cheers

  2. Use the on screen keyboard until you buy a new one.

Open the run prompt and type in "osk"

Thanks digip, will do that in the meantime but have become quite interested in this from a fun POV,thinking about a nifty little utility to screw around with mates computers by remapping various keys:) Just for a bit of fun of course

  3. Hi,

The u key on my dell laptop has stopped working, I've taken the cap off and checked the retainer which is ok, taken the silicon cap off which is ok, it seems to be a problem with the contact being made underneath but I don't know why. Anyway found a nifty utility that would alter the registry for me and map the u to an alternative ket. In my case I picked the right shift key.

Things is it didn't work , I've gone to microsoft site and read their scan code mapper for windows help page:(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/archive/w2kscan-map.mspx)

I looked at the changes tweakkey had made to the rgistry and it seemed to me that the third DWORD value( number of mappings ) should be 03 00 00 00 and not the 02 00 00 00 that tweak key had put in.

Here is the full scan code map data that is in the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout

    00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 03 00 00 00 36 00 16 00 00 00 00 00

Anyway still no joy. Has anyone her done anything similar and if so can you help?

    Cheers

  4. yes , I did and can use google - I was just trying to tap the broad range of expertise here to see if any1 had any particular recommendations due to their experience or really out of the way sites, just as I have recommeded sites and resources in my areas of expertise to others on here. If you can't make a positive contribution don't waste your time replying - easy enough isn't it? :P

  5. Hi

Anyone come across and used any good free turbocad(preferably v12 for windows) training materials/websites/videos?

Particularly to use it to produce room plans?

Thanks for any help. Much appreciated

Any1? Does no one on here use cad?

  7. Ok, so I am thinking just get a Fluke, instead of killing a bunch of cheap ones easily. What would happen if i stuck the testing cord into the electric socket of my house? Would a fluke be able to measure the power, would it crap out, or would I get a loud shock? I am guessing it depends on what model fluke it is? My friend who fixes cars had some kind of multimeter he tested my car battery with..

btw; thanks for the link on how to use a multimeter

From the sounds of it you need to get yourself through a basic electronics course -there are plenty of good ones on line. This will give you more of an idea of how to use a multimeter , what sort you want in order tocover your needs etc. As long as you get an autoranging one your pretty ok on not inadvertently blowing it - oherwise you need ot know what you are doing and be very careful with picking the correct range when usng it.

  8. http://hackaday.com/2009/10/05/pocket-multimeter-review/

And, as mentioned before, no one tool will do everything, buy a small ready-made case or assemble your own if you would like. If you think you're going to be making T568A/T568B cables (ethernet: cat 5, 5e, and 6), you will need little more than some type of wire cutter or even scissors because the connector cuts the insulation, making a solid connection with the copper wire inside. If you plan on doing any intermediate to advanced network setup or testing you might want to get a cable tester.

Fluke are the Dogs Bollocks of multimeters - and not those cheap chinese copy ones off ebay. They should be starting around $150 for the real deal. I use one at work - never regretted buying it.

  9. http://www.videohelp.com/ has many of the answers you seek.

AVI isn't a format, it is a container. Almost any type of video and/or audio can be placed inside an AVI container. Same for OGG.

1st, VHS resolution should never be up converted to DVD resolutions. google will help you find all the different common video resolutions. There are hundreds in use, however. http://forum.videohelp.com/topic174200.html

Consider SVCD, xVCD or VCD as a format alternative for VHS tape conversion. These are MPG1 and MPG2 encoded. These formats work in almost any recent DVD player. I'd guess over 95% of DVD players will play these formats.

If your playback device supports xvid, mpg4, or divx, you can get 2-4 times the video onto a single DVD disk with only minor impact to quality. The downside is that only special DVD players support this format, so you can't just assume a disk will play everywhere. I'd guess less than 10% will play, but if it is just your players, then there's nothing to lose. These divx playback devices aren't really more expensive AND any computer will still be able to play the files.

Perform all your editing in MP2 format, then convert to the final playback only format. Avoid WMV, MOV, RM formats unless those are your final target containers. Why - proprietary formats that aren't well supported outside commercial software.

For editing MPG2 files, I like VideoRedoPlus. Best $49 I've ever spent since it includes commercial detection (comskip-based) and single frame accuracy of cuts. With AVI files, usually you need to cut at key frames only or risk corrupting the video file.

Avoid converting formats. Don't take a DV -->AVI --> DVD since you lose too much detail when you do that. Don't get me wrong, it should work, but the final output will not be as good as a DV-->DVD file. Every CODEC loses something, avoid the loss. For example, if you have AC3 audio, please don't convert it into stereo. Just copy the AC3 or DTS over into the final video file.

BTW, a 1GB disk seems a little small. I hope that was a typo and you meant 1TB disk. 1 hour of MPG2 is about 2GB of data, dependent on scene activity and audio quality.

Just got back off holiday, thanks for taking the time to reply, will follow up all links and google research on the other info you gave. Again thanks - really enjoy having a new project to work on!!

  10. For basics to advanced Movie Maker tips, I always used: http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/ and Papa Johns site.

    http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Links.aspx

He also has some custom stuff to make HD videos, but Vista already comes with the ability to do this, it only pertained to XP coming up to speed and quality of Vistas HD output in moviemaker.

For codecs and such or compressing DVD's, just save the movie as a normal WMV or even AVI, but let the burner software(like Nero) do the compressing for you since they will end up having to recreate the data to fit on the dvd anyway. MovieMaker doens't like third party codecs and can cause it to crash. In fact, I usually go into the Movie Maker settings and disable all thrid party codecs except xvid and a few nero ones.

Movie Maker can also save directly to DVD, but if you want to add menus and such, Nero is the way to go and will convert the video to VOB files for you with more control over the files.

If you have a finished dvd or iso you want to shrink and compress, DVDshrink will do the job, even though you will have to find your own copy on the net because they don't have it on their site due to legal resons(it can rip copywritten DVD's so they can't host it, but it also works well as legit self owned dvd ripper and compressor, so its a great tool if you can find a copy)

http://www.doom9.org/ also has a lot of video editing links, codec reviews, tutorials and forums on video editing in general.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

  11. Hi

just looking for some advice on learning sources. I've got a whole load of DV and analogue tapes of family events etc lying around and have decide its time to get them into some sort of order and backed up so I want to get them onto my computer edit them ( very basic) to cut out the crap and then save them .

At the moment I have a core 2 duo with 1 gb HD, and am planning on using the inbuilt editor that comes to vista to start with - however if someone was to tell me that one of the cut down editing packages from adobe etc would speed things up I could probably swing to the cash for that.

What I am looking for is a site/books that takes a novice through from importing the video , editing ,rendering , archiving, what resolutions to use etc , basically the whole process.

For example I imported my first movie from my sony dv cam this week, imported it over the firewire connection in avi format. Did some basic editing using windows movie editor and then rendered it? to dvd quality - this gave me a file size of just over 8gb for about 45 mins worth of footage( my daughters school play actually), so won't fit on a DVD, its this non familiarity with codecs and resolutions for outputting stuff that I need to rectify. I mean do you guys keep a backup of your original AVI files or just saved your edited stuff in the output resolution? Hoping for some good advice on where I can learn about this stuff

    Cheers

  12. Most big city police forces have a computer crime unit however they are always tied up looking for indecent images on hundreds of hardrives rather than takling anything else. The head of the computer crime unit for my local force said they spent 90% of their time on pedophilia cases.

Your right about the time for working on the system stingwray. Todays press carries a release about pleope who have actually made tax returns to reclaim amounts upto £9k after they had been put on emergency tax code having to wait 3 to 4 weeks because the inland revenue are putting all records onto one system. I wonder if this is all some bollocks up by them with bank account record fields being transposed or something alomg those lines when the DBs are merged ???

  13. OK - bit of an update on this. My accountant has also spoken to the inland revenue about this because he also had a pile of letters from them for all his clients informing him of the £1999 rebate. The IR apparently however are stonewalling and making no comment - the police also were disinterested when he phoned them.

As far as the IR system being down for 2 weeks - I don't believe it - I know how much stink it causes at some multinationals when downtime is as little as 1 to 3 hours so for a major vital government department its pie in the sky. According to my accountant the online access to client files at the IR is still operating. AS it is the security on the online access to these accounts is pretty pathetic anyway.

With regards to this scam - the accountant is working his way through his client list and it seems separate accounts have been opened for each and every client with Barclays, some have already had the rebate paid into the account and some haven't. From the lack of response from the IR and the dodgy "computer system down for 2 weeks due to maintenance blah blah blah......" recorded and verbal message I think this is alot bigger than just the clients of one accountant , IMHO something has gone awry with the revenue computer records.

The opening of so many bank accounts also points to online account applications so the perpetrators obviously have my and others personal details in order to do this. I've checked all my accounts and so far everytinhg seems ok.

Serious;y if I don't get some answers off the IR soon I will be going to the press with this.

  14. Got a tax rebate notice yesterday for £1999. Phoned the IR as I hadn't done my tax return for 08/09 and I also didn't recognise the bank account no or sort code. All I got off them was the payment has been stopped anyway , but it was done after submission of your 08/09 tax return and they couldn't check anything else cos their system would be down for 2 weeks!!!!!WTF!!!!!!!

My brother phoned me today to warn me that he had also got this notice of a £1999 refund despiye not having done his tax return. Apparently the IR don't check any refunds under £2k , my brother had phoned his accountant (which we share) and he said either his system was hacked or its the IR but someone has got hold of all the bank and personal details etc and submitted bogus tax returns sending the money to newly opened accounts and then moving it to offshore accounts.

I will be going to take a look at my accountants system on Monday but was just wondering whether any other self employed UK hak5'ers had had similar experience???

Really am very *****ed off with this and want to know exactly what personal info there hackers have got. Also its unbelievable the IR has its com[puter system for maintenance for 2 weeks just at the time this has happened!!!!!

  15. Which is your favourite? I find I need a few to handle all the file formats I hve come across or is there one you use that does them all? I have tried numerous but have on my machine at the moment - wnizip, winrar, tugzip, magic disk. What do you use for those files with less usual extensions like .sit and .ufi?

  16. Not come across this before. Have Dld'd some files and tried unpacking them with winrar.

    Files are something.r00 .....something.r01...........etc............to something.r12

Have done a crc check usng the sfv file . tried starting the unpacking with something.r00(as there is no something.rar file) an keep geting the error message:"You need to start extraction from a previous volume to unpack something.r00"

done google search and the closest thing I acn get to explaining the process is this link:http://www.jtpfxp.net/nfosfvrar.htm

but from this I seem to be doing nothing wrong .

    any help appreciated.

  17. Just moved my domain registrar and cancelled my hosting. Set up dns using zoneedit and hosting using google apps, tried to send email to my domain from my yahoo webmail account, got the following message:

Sorry. Although I'm listed as a best-preference MX or A for that host,

it isn't in my control/locals file, so I don't treat it as local. (#5.4.6)

I am able to send email from my gmail account to the domain account, can I take it this problem is just because the dns has not updated round the net yet? I set up zone edit dns 2 days ago.

  18. Hacker Spaces are a good idea, I've been in a few and I know of a new one opening in London soon. The issue is they cost money and the only way they really work is if you do it with a group of people you trust. Anyone you let in has to be a friend of the people you trust otherwise everything tends to go tits up and things get nicked, damaged or the place turns into a shit hole.

I can't see how a Hak5 hacker space would really be any different than where they live now.

Juts been sent a mail from a guy trying to organise one inthe north west uk..........will have a look see, seems interesting.

  19. Its that time where my hosting plan is up for renewal - its with dreamhost at the moment - must say they have been really good BUT I don't use all the facilities, storage or bandwith so am looking at something cheaper as the renewal cost for 2 years is $190 which equates to £134 gb pounds for me at the moment. Hae found a plan with 123.co.uk for £2 per month working out at £48 for the 2 years which will do what I want.

I'm just curious what other folks on here are paying and what recommendations you have.

  20. Well just bought a new dell for the kids - first new purchase that will come with vista preinstalled. All my other computers are either running linux, win2k or winxp. I haven't used vista before so am considering leaving it on there.

    My questions are:

Is vista past its teething phase now?

Any links for reading I should do Vista , securing it, what utilities I should be loading and how to set up?

Any advice greatfully appreciated from a vista newbie
