  1. Are you intentionally confusing lines of argument here? I have no beef myself with peoples personal sexual orientation, my friends who have"been chewed up and spit out by the gay scene" expressed this opinion themselves, it wasn't my conclusion, they haven't suddenly decided to lead a hetero life either. They are only saying that the "scene" they experienced here in the UK is not the way to go for young people. they would rather have never have got into but just relied on leading a normal life interacting with other people in their local area and developed relationships gradually and naturally rather than being drawn into the "scene" and basically exploited and pressurised into living and acting a certain way because of their sexuality.

Anyway you throwing that comment into the mix again misses the last line that we were discussing which was the "rights" of gay couples to have children. Again your going on about me presenting no empirical evidence, you are missing the point here. It is you who need to be presenting a solid and scientific argument in favour of your position as the phenomenon of gay couples bringing up children is a recent one, and therefore less is known of the consequences for the child and society as a whole. Looking at it from a personal experience I have children, would I allow any of my gay friends to look after them? Yes I would be happy for some of them to the same way I would be happy for some of my hetero friends . Would I be happy for my wifes gay brother and his partner to look after them, yes I would. Would I agree that they would do a good job bringing up children from birth ? They would probably care and love for them as much as we do but that doesn't mean that the kids would develop and learn in the same way they would with a mixed couple. Basically your argument is if a couple of either mixed or single sex is involved sexually they should have a right to children. Why does being sexually involved give them this right? If this isn't your argument then what about if two friends or relatives(2 sisters for instance) who have the intention of living together long term want to have a child by whatever means and raise it? Do they have the "right"? If not why? Is it just because they aren't having sex? If you think they should have the right do you think a child will develop as well in such an environment as they would in what is regard as a normal mixed sex environment?

"Surely you have some empirical evidence to back you your beliefs, or you wouldn't be attacking my evidence as unscientific, would you?"

Again I don't have to have empirical evidence, and its "your evidence " is it?

An example of your reasoning would be:

Let children have sex with adults as soon as they are 14 - why not? Well show me the evidence this would be detrimental to the children?

My response to this would be(which is what I'm argiung in this case):

I don't have to show you any evidence that this would be detrimental because it shouldn't be allowed in the first place because you would be basically running an unethical experiment with children as the subjects. Is it ethical to say to gay couples - go ahead have kids - your rights are paramount and the rights of the children you have are of secondary importance. The fact we're running an unethical social experiment here doesn't matter?

I suggest that allowing same sex couples as a general principle to be able to have children when they want is tantamount to using the children as lab rats in a social experiment and as such cannot be condoned. That is not to say that ther can't be exceptions which could be looked at on an individual basis with the good of the child being paramount.

Btw:have you read any of the links I provided discussing whether psychology is a science?

  2. Physcology is not a "science", and I'd love to know what evidence they have for this. Whats the percentage of kids in same sex couples they have looked at, were these brought up from birth or later?

Have you actually read the thing I linked to? It has an extensive bibliography of where they drew their evidence from.

How old are they now for the "physcologists" to have reached the conclusion they have. Anyway Horza you obviously have made your mind up about this which is your right so fair enough and I've said my peace now.

The first study on the subject was in 1972. Yes, I have made up my mind - after doing some research on the matter. You appear to have made up your mind based on wild speculation and ignoring evidence I provide that is contrary to you beliefs.

Your next arguments going to be that gay penguins bring up their kids?

No, that's my argument against homosexuality being unnatural.

"You appear to have made up your mind based on wild speculation and ignoring evidence I provide that is contrary to you beliefs."

Just because I have not stated sources or argued points does not mean I have made up my mind based on "wild speculation"- also from my point of view ignoring "evidence!" you have provided links to is completely logical since IMO and many others pyschology is NOT a science.

Why don't you follow your own suggestion and follow some of these links?

  3. Physcology is not a "science"(imho), and I'd love to know what evidence they have for this. Whats the percentage of kids in the whole study were same sex couples they have looked at, were these brought up from birth or later? How old are they now for the "physcologists" to have reached the conclusion they have. What percentage of the pop as a whole was the study group cos this will affect how they have extrapolated the data. Anyway Horza you obviously have made your mind up about this which is your right so fair enough and I've said my piece now.

Your next arguments going to be that gay penguins bring up their kids?

  4. The "gay scene" is what you find generally in the bigger cities. I don't know about the states but in NW england Manchester has a big scene - this is where a lot of young people go - this isn't my label/description .

As for a reason - I think kids are generally better off with one parent of each sex - I don't think a child can get as rounded a life and caring experience otherwise. Both sexes bring something different to the mix.

The wink was for the sterilisation crack btw.

  5. Solely because you think they'll find it hard to accept their parents' sexuality? I'm not certain what you mean by struggle, do you mean they found it hard to accept that they were gay? If that's the case I think the reason those people probably struggled with their sexuality is they grew up thinking there was something wrong with being gay, it seems less likely someone who grows up with gay parents would think that.

Basically , in a perfect world I think a kid should have a mum and a dad, this is a generalisation I know and I accept there are some gay couples who would make great parents however this doesn't mean they have a "right" to have kids. On the other hand there are lots of hetero couples who should never be allowed kids and should be sterilised to prevent them breeding

As far as my friends go it was more than them struggling with their sexuality- basically the gay scene took them in, chewed them up and spit them out. Have they turned straight because of this? Of course not - they can't can they? What some of them do wish however is that they could.

This is getting a bit heavy for this board methinks.

  6. Yeah maybe, but it would be fun just to go over some pointers on hacking together a multilan network using a few routers or even a few old pcs as routers. I mean the hardware routers evry1 has now are a good first defence but who has them setup as secure as they can be, also running a web server hanging off them with a dmz option selected is just a joke, you need another router hanging off one with the server behind that.

  7. A whole show on securing your home network would be good - how many folks on here have made their netowrks as secure as it is possible to, especially if they have kids with their own comps or run their own web/mail servers?

Maybe a "hack my network challenge?" - j/k

  8. so what if men were only taught to like women and visa versa...

I never make my sexuality an issue with other people. If my friends or co-workers start talking about their significant others, I will, too. If someone asks me questions, I'll answer honestly.

As far as public displays of affection... I don't like seeing other people doing it, and I don't care to be seen doing it. It just makes me uncomfortable. Go suck face somewhere else.

Couldn't agree more- but I must also add I find it just amazing that some people who are gay think its a "right" that they can have kids. I have some good friends who have told me they had it hard enough growing up dealing with their own sexuality - they would never have kids and put them through anything approaching what they went through.

  9. Hi

I've been looking for a plugin so I can use my mp3 player with itunes. I've been to badfruit and tried to download badapple but had no joy. I've read somewhere there was not much success with it anyway. Has any 1 else done this or got any ideas

  10. Thanks for your reply. I sort of went through everything you suggested apart from the knoppix - I had pclinuxos boot disk but it didn't have right drivers for my card. Anyway tried the knoppix and it went ok - connected wirlessly fine so it must be down to the win / dell setup softwareutils.

Spent the last 15 mins checking them and boy are they a mess, if you don't do things n an exact certain order which non of the docs make clear they each keep changing the others settings. Finally managed it by running windows task manager to check when windows was loading anything while I was using the dell util to set up the card and connection. Sure enough I had to clos a couple of things before applying the changes I had made and hey presto I'm back on wireless. I really have no idea how this happened in the first place but I'm blaming MS and Dell!

  11. I know this board isn't really a "hardware I got a problem please help me " type of board but I have so please help me.hehe

My dell inspiron 1300 laptop which I have had for 3 months now has been running fine -cnnecting to my 3com officeconnect wifi router with no problems and even pickiing up a neighbours wireless connection quite accidently - I must remeber to tell him to stop using WEP encrytion! Anyway a couple of days ago i stopped being able to connect wirelessly to my router or indeed see my neighbours connection either.

I assumed it was a hardware problem with the card which is a mini pci card. I ran the dell diagnostics on the card and it says all is fine with it! I then did the following

Reinsgtalled the drivers for the card - still didn't work

Checked my router and updated the firmware - the router works fine.

Googled for any known porblems and solutions for this card - no help there.

I did install vmware player about 3 weeks ago but it hadn't caused any problems at all - anyway I uninstalled it to make sure. Still no wifi connection. I am running win xp and it reports no problems with the device in device manager. It just won't connect to my wifi router. Any suggestions please?

  12. Didn't want to start a new thread as its a related question so I hope no one minds me putting it here.

I can't register for Pandora.com as I am not in the USA , can I just make up a zip code or does it check against existing zip codes and what are the legalities of me doing this?

  13. Had to edit this section in the vmx file:

    # Higher resolution lockout, adjust values to exceed 800x600

    svga.maxWidth = "1024"

    svga.maxHeight = "800"

    #

They were at 800 and 600 originally and the x install wouldn't work with these settings. Kept getting "screen height too large, exceeds 600 adjust settings " or something along those lines. edited the vmx to use 1024x800 and all was well! Wonder why this was a problem with pclinux and not ubuntu or mepis?

  14. Hi - just found the casts and am loving them. I'm no uber hacker or mega programmer or linux guru. In fact I am still pretty mucha linux novice. Still I am making a big effort this year to get my skill levels up to where I know about half what you guys are talking about. I am pretty ok with MS stuff and basic networking though.

Anyway just been playing around with Vmware player on my laptop. Managed to get Ubuntu and Mepis both running but am having problems running pclinuxOS cos it hangs at the point where it is installing the vid drivers. This is a bit weird cos I can run pclinuxos on the same machine off of a LiveCD.Btw the machine is a Dell Inspiron 1300 with 40 gb HD and 768Ram. Any pointers on sites I could look to find a solution to this would be appreciated .

Again just want to say how cool the casts are guys. Keep up the good work guys! And more of Ali please- she's a riot!
