  1. That was funny. Dont think if I wanted to get to London from new york or vice versa I would swim it though.
  2. so you all want to know what I smell. I smell a scam, that will only get you spam. You know you like my mad rhymes.
  3. well of course, just from looking at linux most should be able to tell that Linux isnt intended to be like windows at all which is why making it work like windows is so hard. Linux is designed to give someone full complete control over there operating system. Literally every aspect of linux can be rewritten or switched out. Linux is marketed at those with alot of computer expierience. It is not intended to be user friendly for your average joe computer user.
  4. I agree on my laptop right now I have Xubuntu and it is great because of the fact that it doesnt look like windows and uses almost no system resources.
  5. I have never seen linux act the same as windows though. The closet I have seen linux get to windows is Linspire.
  6. very nice thank you, really like the blue and orange one.
  7. I am doing a dist-upgrade to Kubuntu 6.10 right now and when 7.04 is ready to be released then I will do a dist-upgrade to that. I think Ubuntu 6.10 just had problems running on my laptop so now I am gonna try running it on a desktop. The same config as above but keep your finger crossed that it will still work with my USB Belkin Wireless adapter.
  8. there is a massive community around 6.06 and as for out of date, well not really, all my hardware works and all my software works on the newest version, so I wouldnt call it out of date. Even though there is a newer version available. I actually have 6.10 and I went back to 6.06 because I liked it better plus ship it will send you the 6.06 cds for free meaning I dont have to waste any money
  9. Ive got Kubuntu 6.06lts running on a Pentium 3 1ghz 512mb Ram 60gb Hard-drive Radeon 9250 and am very impressed with how it runs. I just wanted to spread the word of how well it has worked for me. Maybe someone else wants to try it. Very good for wardriving I might add.
  10. I like how that new forum looks I just checked out that test, I like it alot. If you move over to that I will have no problems with it :-), cheers Hak5
  11. Sweet I missed my HAK.5, welcome back to the internet Hak5
  12. sushi, cherry coke, coffee, and trail mix sometimes
  13. its all yours famicon long as it remains unchanged. The purpose was to describe the problem Hackers have at school and such. I have alot more, find myself in extreme boredom day to day so I decided to get involved with my crappy little schools "zine" so thats what Ive been writing this for. Glad you all like.
  14. The Hackers conundrum By: Aaron Capper I think the realization of who you are occurs in high school, and most schools have a place to put you to help you realize your potential. An athlete interested in football would probably want to join the football team, if they are interested in soccer they join the soccer team. The problem that we face is that there is no team for us. We quickly realize that what we want cannot be satisfied by the programs that schools offer, they do not offer something for us. The last time I checked, all the computer courses did was teach you how to use Word and Powerpoint. “I am a hacker, enter my world... Mine is a world that begins with school... I'm smarter than most of the other kids, this crap they teach us bores me...†Hackers are quickly ostracized from the social structure that runs the schools, you have a groups of people that hang out together. The athletes, the preppy kids, the wanna be gangsters, the real gangsters, the stoners, and of course we cant forget the rich kids that probably should go into the preppy group. Heres our problem initially upon entry into the high school world we almost immediately realize that we wont fit in. “Damn kid. All he does is play games. They're all alike. And then it happened... a door opened to a world... rushing through the phone line like heroin through an addict's veins, an electronic pulse is sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought... a board is found. "This is it... this is where I belong..." I know everyone here... even if I've never met them, never talked to them, may never hear from them again... I know you all...†Then we begin to realize the reason we do not fit into the high school atmosphere. It is because the high school atmosphere was not intended for us. It was intended to help people like the above mentioned groups succeed in life and society. Hackers however are seen as unimportant, they are seen as being the counter culture of success. Its not that we are anti social, actually it is usually quite the opposite most will answer any computer question you have, Usually in great detail and length. This is an oddity because most people assume that in order to have knowledge of something that you need a diploma or certification of some sort. This results in us having a problem, where as we are unable to proceed with our lives due to the fact that high school will totally turn you off of any school in the future. Soon though A hacker finds an outlet, some way to make a living off what they do. Usually this happens later in life though. “This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch, the beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering gluttons, and you call us criminals. We explore... and you call us criminals. We seek after knowledge... and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias... and you call us criminals. You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals.†Eventually we realize this is our world that we can tap into the system and use it to our advantage. We have the ability to do things that others cannot, we can stare for hours at code, or hardware and without even knowing what we are doing, fix it, or modify it to do something better. It is almost as if our subconcious mind has been modified to allow us to understand how computers work at a level others cannot. “Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like. My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me for. I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual, but you can't stop us all... after all, we're all alike.†All quotes taken from “The Hacker Manifesto†By: The Mentor
  15. well the project is pretty much dead, I need more resources and maybe in the future but doing this while going to school is just a pain in the ass so maybe when I am out.
  16. dude it says in small letters on this bottle of Jack Daniels I had, Warning may cause intoxication, but milk, thats kinda stupid.
  17. I am unsure what you would call it, it isnt spam in the normal sense because we got free MP3s but then again it would seem that it was a spammer that put it up there. Even though those MP3s wouldn't be my first choice for personal listening, some may find them very amusing with that in mind I do think that this is like good spam which would be the first good spam I have ever seen in my life. So congrats spammer you have managed to gain the trust of the various internet entities on these forums, bravo.
  18. This is the first time we have ever been spammed by something usefull.
  19. I wasnt really trying to single out 1 group but I have just seen alot of like palenstinian hate sites. But the article is undergoing some revisions as we speak so this is supposed to have information about hackers in general, meaning the community. Not me so feel free criticize me and dont worry about me being all emo about it cus I want the criticism. I was also hoping to quote from this thread what some of you have said. If you all dont mind.
  20. I was reading an article entitled bullying making head way on the internet and was wondering how the hell it is possible to bully someone over the internet anyway heres the article http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/sch...1455722274.html Plus I wouldnt advise trying to bully someone here over the internet or the person doing the bullying might have his computer doing some strange things.
  21. Ive heard that Microsoft uses Sun based systems for alot of their database stuff.
  22. I agree on all the points presented mostly, I just feel that a majority of Hackers do not believe in something that has a detrimental effect on the spreading of knowledge. For example being a racist hacker would hard since you would negate some piece of information because it was written by someone of another race or sexists would declare something false because it was written by a female and such. I probably should rephrase alot of the parts because I dont think most hackers care who they get information from as long as it is factual.
  23. Well here in lies the problem this has to be explainable to people who dont understand anything about computers. I am having trouble getting the Hackers ethics, across to normal people, what we believe and why we believe.
  24. So as I am sure everyone here is aware the public opinion of hackers is really low so I wrote something to raise it. Here it is in all it unedited glory. What is a Hacker By: Aaron Capper 1 common question that comes up is what is a hacker? Many peoples perception is that we are bad, that we exploit computer systems, we write viruses, that somehow we are responsible for the ills of the internet, this is in essence false. Hackers are not people that exploit computers, and write viruses and spyware. A hacker is someone who has an insatiable lust for technology. Essentially we are people that are mesmerized by the computer. We take it and learn everything we can about it. We understand the computer at its core level. Not at the level where if I click this button the computer reacts by doing this. We understand it at the level that if I click this button the computer runs this program and that does something, then it translates this into something human that I can interact with. Our fascination is driven by possibility. What we can do with this now that we have this, from the day it was created the computer was essentially a device filled with possibility. It becomes more then just the device we sit at and use it becomes more of a second hand. It stops being a device and more of a window, into a world that so few people understand. People have described it as a descension into a metaverse. Why a descension, because we don't understand it on a level above other people we understand it on a lower level, the core level if you will. (guess what I am gonna use the word metaverse, if you dont know what it is, its the information universe, basically all information). So why is public opinion so low? It is because we are not normal in societies eye. We understand something that is abnormal to most. So few people understand computers that anyone that does understand it as we do is seen as being abnormal. Often hackers are looked down upon so a lot of them do not show that they know anything about it at all. We are seen as lesser people sometimes because of the fact that we are not understood. No one understands what drives us and no one understands what we understand. Most people fear what they don't understand. (if you are a hacker and you read this then you should know thats why the moron with a 5th grade vocabulary keeps trying to screw with you.) You can see this fear in the government almost daily. The way hackers are prosecuted, Kevin Mitnick was held for 4 years without a trial, he finally did get a trial in which no evidence was provided against him. It wasn't that he had commited a hanoius crime it was that they where afraid of his inteligience. Because they felt that he was smart enough to essentially start a nuclear holocaust if he had access to a phone. Most would agree this was rather far fetched but this was the reason he was held for so long. After he got out of prison he was on supervised release where he could not use anything other then a standard telephone. (please how the hell do you start a nuclear war from a phone, it isn't technically possible, I seriously think the judge was on something.) Business and government is afraid of hackers because of the fact that we are very good at getting information and exposing it. Most governments and businesses do not want their actions to be published or known. The risk that there might be someone out there that could get this information makes them a threat. We are not anti-American and we are not anarchists we just want information. Hackers see things that are going on as being wrongs against society that are executed by corporations. For example I am sure that everyone reading this has bought a Windows based PC. After about 2 weeks of use it runs slow. This is because it is infected with something called Spyware. Spyware is essentially a small program that turns on in the background of the computers operating system. The purpose of spyware is to gather information off your computer. Basically it goes through and gets your email address, any email addresses you have saved or are in a plain text format, and then it will grab and passwords and logins that are stored in your cookies that are saved by the internet That is on top of gathering all your personal information, address, real name, stuff like that. What happens is you got lots of spyware on your computer and it slows it down on a massive scale eating up your CPUs power. If you want some proof of how spyware gets your password, well if youve used Myspace then youve probably heard of profile hijacking. (funny thing is most of the spyware companies reside in Silicon Valley well within law enforcements reach.) Microsoft, Ebay, and especially Myspace all make money from spyware. They contract out to spyware companies like Adrevolver, GATOR, and Adsoft. This software essentially as I stated get onto your computer and causes it to slow down as well as collecting all your personal information. Whats worse is that this is illegal under the canspam act. Has anyone ever really been in trouble for creating spam. No, why, they have money and lots of it too. How can this not be prosecuted. It damages other people property and can slow down a computer by 20%. Hackers did not do this, if anything weve tried to get rid of this by telling people about it. Hackers have contacted judges and attorneys all which refuse to do nothing. Even the specialists set aside for computer related crime when notified just look the other way. This is what makes us so upset at how our world, metaverse, the internet, whatever you want to call it has changed. For those that think that hackers are bad and immoral I would like to present to you a list that will more then likely change those theories people have created. Things we Believe in: -We have no religious bias (Muslim, Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Klingon we don't care) -We have no sex based bias (male/female it doesn't matter, although female hackers would be nice because then I might get a date :-), nows the part where you burst into laughter.) -We have no race bias (black, white, brown, hell purple it doesn't matter) -None of the pop culture BS (really if you listen to Britney Spears and cry who gives a shit) -We believe in the spreading of knowledge (that is knowledge, not something that impedes it like the other shit.) This is a short list, if you notice these are all things that we do not care about. We care about the spreading of knowledge and the use of the internet for information. That is legit information, not malicious information. Things we don't believe in: -Spreading of race hate (this makes the spread of information limited based on race, that means all you neo nazis are shit outa luck and need to get the hell off the internet, before we put the smack down on your server and send all the info on it to the FBI, really though if you cant get over skin pigmentation I dont know how your gonna get over being one of the sisters in county.) -Stupid sexist crap (we all admit to being attracted to the opposite sex which means that we can understand the photos, but when some pric creates a webiste to say how women should stay in the kitchen, well its BS and they need to get the hell off the internet.) -All the fanatics that think one religion is better then the other (guess what you Palestinians who post how you hate Jews so much need to get the hell off the internet.) -Cant forget the pedophiles (get the hell off the internet because what you do is just wrong on so many levels, you and the neo nazis can share a bunk in prison together, plus the bright side is the neo nazis will probably shank you within the first week.) So lets see if we can get this down right: 1.If you are a racist you can not be a hacker 2.If you are a sexist you can not be a hacker 3.If you hate people of a different religion then yourself you are not a hacker 4.If you hate people based on their music, TV, clothing whatever you are not a hacker Also I would like to not stealing code does not make you a hacker so Bill Gates you suck and will be in a seperate cell beside the neo nazis and pedophiles only because we dont want them to shank you or make you their bitch. (sodomy is just wrong on so many levels.) I hope this document clears up a lot of the questions that anyone may have. Thanks for reading it if you bothered to read this far. This is who we are, not a word, and no one is gonna make us change.
