  1. Your pro-BNP? Dear god, why? They have no clear ideas about politics other than "its all immigrants fault", they are hopelessly corrupt, and the only people who support them are the "I'm not racist but..." crowd.
  2. First thing to do is to consult with the people who run the schools, and possibly there lawyers. You need to have a written policy which discusses legitimate uses of the network, and illegitimate uses. This needs to be agreed to by the school, and made available for the students to review. If you opt to install IT polices unilaterally then there is a chance it will come back to you. Secondly, unless these are tiny schools, your not going to be able to do anything yourself in real time, you will need to use block lists that are updated automatically. Your not going to be able to block everything, by accepting this you can be more productive. As for what to use, I would suggest using SmoothWall's Network Guardian or more specifically School Guardian, as it is Becta ready. You don't want to be the person blocking anything yourself, you want to off-load that to someone else, because if its your block list, and somebody manages to download Harry Potter slash fiction then you get the blame, if its a 3rd party they are responsible. http://download.smoothwall.net/pdf/brochur.../65034-S-A4.pdf Its either a software appliance or a box you can buy and plug in to the network. Lastly, don't wiretap the kids (unless its a monitor port connected to SNORT), it opens a whole kettle of fish you don't want to open. If they get there facebook password stolen after using some proxy with a .ru name, this isn't your problem. Having there password stolen will make them learn faster than any number of boring lectures from the IT guy about SSL and cryptography.
  3. You need to be a lot more clear about what type of things you intend to do with your laptop, your budget, features you want, features you don't really care about etc. I like business class machines like the Dell E-Series, HP EliteBook and Lenovo Thinkpads, but you will pay a premium for them, and you can get next day, on-site warranty repairs with these type of machines.
  4. ID cards are being scrapped, along with several databases it was attached to, and there will be a comprehensive review of anti-terror legislation including things like the 28 days detention without charge and stopping photographers under section 44.
  5. 1-888-571-2048 If that doesn't work, just call the switch board and it should tell you. You may need to reinstall if you have used up all your time.
  6. Alas, they are required though, we've been living way beyond our means for some time now.

  8. http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/opensour...-android-devel/ http://www.vogella.de/articles/Android/article.html I never progressed beyond BASIC so take that as it is, but IBM always have good advice for developers when it comes to Linux.
  9. Ahh, welcome to Android fragmentation hell. I upgraded my HTC Hero, which has been stuck on 1.5 (HTC might update it to 2.1 in June), to a Nexus one which will be getting 2.2 in a week or so. The problem with the heavily customised Android phones is that they are usually running older versions of the OS and the updates take much, much longer to arrive. The long a short of it, unless you root your phone and deal with the somewhat precarious nature of custom ROMs for android phones, you are stuck on whatever the manufacturer provides. In your case, Sony are planning to do a 2.1 update in Q4, 2010, but this is a vague date. If your happy with your phone as it is, then while you will miss out on some of the newer features, and a large chunk of apps are only being developed for 2.x currently, it will be better than whatever you had. The main reason I got a Nexus One is so I could be at the bleeding edge of Android development despite the Desire being a technically better device. I am tempted to advise you to unlock and sell your X10, and do the same, but this isn't cheap. As for iPhone vs Android? iPhone hardware is technically better than most Android handsets, its a more popular platform and easier to use than Android. Android is more flexible, and far more hacker friendly the the iPhone, and devices like the N1 & Desire are nicer than a 3GS imho. If you want to make money, develop for the iPhone, if you want to do it for fun and learning, maybe making a little bit of cash, then Android all the way. Plus, Steve Jobs is a cunt, this may factor into your thinking. ;)
  10. Not really correct. Left wing politicians tend to be more controlling, want to micro-manage peoples lives and generally believe that they know better than the people who elected them. Right wing politicians tend to fixate on a few issues they consider to be Bad, but otherwise leave people to get on with there lives. New Labour was formed out of 70's style socialists trying to re-invent themselves in light of Thatcher (i.e. "we can do the whole economy thing but be kinder"), but there old tendencies to think that if only they could force everyone to behave in a certain way, there plans would work came through, especially in light of 9/11. The conservatives come from privilege, and thus tend towards the idea that they just want to be left alone to do what they want to do, which is make money. This really comes to light when you compare Cameron's ideas (Britain is broken, and it will need the people to fix it) with Browns (Britain has problems, and the state needs to fix them). The liberals tend towards the idea that people need to state to help them help themselves, ie you raise the level of income tax and it goes towards dealing with the gap between living benefits and the minimum wage. Who didn't see this coming? It was bound to happen as soon as VAT went from 17.5% to 15% (which made fuck all real difference to the things I bought). Plus, something has to pay for raising income tax limits from £6.5K to £10K (which will do more to help poor people).
  11. If it is a web cam, it will probably be tied into a municipal network, and not exposed to the internet in a manner you can access.
  12. This pretty much explains the problems, additionally a large chunk of employment is provided by excessive levels of public services. You can't have a circular economy with no wealth producers. I disagree, Scotland, Wales and NI need to have separate budgets that are based on there tax receipts, not on funding from Westminster. In England, we need to see more development of infrastructure in the North to encourage more companies to invest there. Its all very well saying only the south is worth it (and this is coming from someone who moved to the south to find work) but if we want to see a successful Britain we need to see development of infrastructure and investment in the people and businesses of the north of England. Its not like everything south of the M25 can go it alone. Long story, Scotland needs to put up or shut up about seceding, if it thinks it can go it alone then do it.
  13. The tragedy is that Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland are all far to poor to secede, which is why the nationalist movements never seem to go anywhere. So until Scotland is financially independent I think the British government and people have every right to "stick our nose in".
  14. The liberals in conjuction with the conservatives, in a *full* coilition? I'm actually quite happy about this.
  15. I disagree. One of the main reasons Hak5 has been far more successful than a lot of online tech video things is because it borrowed heavily from television production values. When it comes to online vs broadcast you have to view this as just a distribution channel, rather than a format. This is backed up by services like Hula and iPlayer, its the same content but delivered via a browser instead of a TV set. TV has had many years to work out how to make a show, so you should use/steal these ideas and just use the internet to bypass the broadcast restrictions TV has.
  16. Worst thing was, I wrote to my MP about it multiple times, and she agreed that it was being pushed through to quickly, that it was incomplete and had many areas both she and her party disagreed with. Then when it came to the vote she didn't bother to turn up. Fuck you Maria Miller.
  17. Escalate to higher ups, email bomb the board members and consider a small claims court action (this is complicated by you leaving the network). However, there is no law regarding unlocking of phones, only OFCOM guidelines so you have no legal right here. You may just want to sell the handset if you get no action.
  18. they are cheap and insanely hi-powered, if you have a better solution for a USB device then let us know, and I will buy one.

    Dumb Noobs

Mainly because I suspect that your basic human desire to stay alive and in one piece will over rule any cunning plans you can come up with to hide your data. From my experience this is always true. You can brag all you want, but your only human and that's your weak point.

30 minutes in a windowless room with an electric drill, claw hammer & pliers and I could have any volume of passwords I wanted.
  21. WD 1TB Black editions run for about 99US$ Also, Intel x25m SSD's are mint, good price/performance ratio.
  22. Apple make great products, really well thought out and designed for the end user rather than the geek. The iPhone 4G is probally one of the nicest designs for a phone I've ever seen, I'd buy an iPad if I had the cash to waste on one simply because its the first coffee table tablet I've seen that really works for me (although the JooJoo Pad looks nice from a hacker POV, it doesn't have an IPS panel or the same market penetration), and Mac Pro's + Cinema displays are some of the best desktop PC's on the market. However, Steve Jobs is a pious cunt, and for that reason the iPod touch I have will probally be my only Apple purchase.
  23. Double the memory (or if you can't afford to, plan your current purchases with a mind to do so), and consider getting a Dell UltraSharp 2209WA and replacing the HDD's with WD Black Edition models (faster and a 5 year warranty).
  24. England isn't devolved, we're run by the British government. As for the matters discussed, the economy & foreign relations are British issues (especially since Scotland is subsided by the English tax payer), but I will give you domestic issues. And like it or not, they are the largest parties and the only ones that have any real say on British issues as neither the SNP or Plaid Cymru will ever win a national majority. The regional debates were there and focused on the issues that are more important to the devolved governments, as they should have done. The real issue here isn't the TV debates, its why Scottish and Welsh voters have any say on English matters, they should hold independent elections for there respective parliaments that will form devolved governments which are part of a national government. If the ultimate goal is independence along side a fast tracked EU membership then this will have to happen.
  25. Mainly because the SNP, Plaid Cymru are minority parties who will only ever appeal to a small amount of voters, and because the combined population of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is smaller then the metropolitan population of London alone. I do think devolution needs to be examined further, but both Welsh and Scottish nationalists have to come to terms with being much smaller and far less influenced parts of a whole. I don't think either were justified in being part of the main debates (and neither do I think UKIP or the Green Party had a place), but there was nothing stopping BBC Scotland or BBC Cymru from hosting there own debates that focused on the devolved governments politics. Oh wait, they did: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdo...cottish_debates http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdo...0#Welsh_debates http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdo...Ireland_debates Personally, as someone living in Hampshire I have very little interest in what the SNP have to say and no one actually cares about Northern Ireland so long as they aren't killing each other.
