  1. People should learn not to bullshit to people who actually know that stuff. They are neither impressed or think better of you, quiet the opposite actually. Currently fastest copper broadband in the UK is 24Mb ADSL2+, for which the majority is supplied by Be Internet and O2 (who own Be). They have been experimenting with dual bonded lines and more, which obviously increases speed in multiples. You really lost everyone by claiming to have reached over 100Mb, there are very few modems that could even support speeds that high, seeming that I'm willing to bet you a have the free modem you go with the connection, your certainly not got one. Please go and waste your own time and not others.
  2. I would be willing to bet a considerable amount of money that it was 8GB of RAM and not 16GB.
  3. I use 'The Unarchiver' on the Mac, Stuffit was just too much like WinRAR for me liking. I use 7Zip on windows.
  4. Well I ordered mine today finally. I was interested and horrified to see that the payment screens didn't default to HTTPS Then even more horrified when the Certificate they used wasn't valid for that domain! Don't know if anyone else noticed this, but I'd be careful if anyone else goes through the process.
  5. I'm definitely it, but don't need a bed in a hostel. Sounds good to me, although I don't think I'll be drinking again by then after last night.
  6. I hope so. Given that I'm London all the time, if anybody wants to go for a drink/meet then I'm always up for it. Just drop me a line. If your nice enough then I might even put you up for a night on my fouton... (no sleeping bag included).
  7. I don't know of any video codecs which are jpeg/etc sequence. Videos have their own file formats which are designed to be optimal for videos, not stills. The biggest difference is that most video codecs don't represent each frame as an individual picture, they use keyframes and then update frames which map changes to the keyframe. This is going to severely limit the amount of data you could hide in a video (but obviously still more than a single picture). You other problem is that codecs and file formats for media work in very complex ways, which are often designed to remove information which cannot be seen by the human looking at it, this is the area where you would store your information. You will have to study the video codec you want to use very carefully to come up with a placement algorithm for the information, this is non trivial. Its not going to be any harder to detect, StegAnalysis systems often are designed to process large amounts of information, this is because people don't hide information in every picture already, they just aren't in a video format. Steganography really isn't a simple as that exert from Wikipedia implies and as I previously mentioned, it depends a lot on the file format. I really suggest you get a copy of Disappearing Cryptography, it is a really good book and will answer nearly all your questions about current steganography. By no means is the project impossible, but given the amount of knowledge you seem to have (no offense), its likely to take you a long time. It has little practical application, but would be a nice PoC. Any more questions, just ask.
  8. I think you need professional help and a life.
  9. Already going, went last year and its worth it. Its not like CCC or Defcon, so don't compare it to them. I think it also coincides with the London meet, if it happens...
  10. Not as far as I know, you might want to check that. Hyperthreading is not dual core. As far as I am aware, there are no laptops using the dual core atom, because of the increased power usage.
  11. I can build it for about $400, even if thats $50 over the Fit PC, I would consider I was getting a lot more for my money. Tranquil PC make one which is fanless, its a bit more price, but I'm actually considering getting a 64GB SSD for it, then it would be completely silent, while having everything that I want.
  12. Sorry, this thread only requires one answer = Google
  13. Given that it only has a 2.5" HDD, your not going to be storing much music or movies on it. Plus with no RAID your not going to have any help when the disk dies unless your really good with backups. One video out connection is poor as well for this and it's not going to have good audio either. Also its not going to be able to play HD video, you'd be better trying to get something ION based if you want to use it for media work.
  14. Not good bang for your buck. Get a Mini-ITX atom dual-core, they are really good value. Not as small, a tiny bit more power hungry, but a lot more power and proper multi-threading which I personally think is necessary in a server. The fit pc is better suited for other, more interesting activities.
  15. I can't really see what that size is, looks a bit like 1/4 inch. I have plenty of 9mm ones which your welcome to, assuming you don't want tons of them.
  16. Sounds right, but I don't know why it would have been released under a completed different name!
  17. I don't think anyones has mentioned it, but I can really recommend Cypher.
  18. Look for the people dressed in all in black in the height of summer and wearing sunglasses inside that have pale skin. Thats usually a good place. Short of that, look for hacker t-shirts.
  19. Very possibly, haven't done it, you likely to take quite a big hit in performance if your running it on a optical disk. USB flash would be very good though.
  20. Yes, copying a website is rocket science. What can I say? Crime does pay and pay well it does. Where's there is money, you'll always attract the best and the brightest. And too think that phishing websites like that are the lowest rung on the ladder.
  21. My opinion is stick to a core subject for a degree. So if your want to do computers then thats Computing/Computer Science. In my opinion if you really want to work with computers, having a good CS degree will take you a lot further than not if you know your stuff. Thats not to say that people who don't do CS can't get the career in computing that they want, but you will have to do a lot more learning on the job, yes you might be able to program reasonably well in C or Matlab, but there is a hell of a lot more to computers than that! My advice is that if you have started the Mech Eng degree, then stick with it, its a good course and all of the engineering subjects have a lot of ground in math, so they have to teach that. Remember that is one of the core skills that you will be able to put on your CV from your degree. Then if you want to go into computers then do a Masters in CS. This will give you enough grounding and start to be able to do a CS job effectively from the beginning and show you where you need to spend more time. I really see getting a Bachelors in a subject as just grounding for life and teaching some core skills, you take a Masters in what you want to do for a career. As for PhDs, well I'm off too minds about them, because of the big difference between learning styles of a degree and a PhD, you have to work out whether it would suit you and whether you would benefit from doing it. Its not likely to help your career significantly. Its more about yourself and giving something back to the academic community in my opinion.
  22. I killed my laptops OS about 7 times while at CCC last Christmas. I reinstalled it 3 talks in a row one day. Most of the time I was being way to fast for my own good and ended up doing too much damage worth fixing, so out came the USB key.
  23. I've had it so that part of the key is stored on the USB drive, then when booted, the system has access to part of the key to access the USB drive's encrypted partition. But never the kernel on the USB drive, I'm going to have to try that.
  24. Linux supports full disk encryption. Look for LUKS with a LVM. I don't think hardware encryption on disk drives is that great and you normally end up paying way too much of a premium because they are aimed for business use. I've used LUKS with LVM on ubuntu and fedora now and they work well, I'm moving away from encryption on my mobile devices now as it causes problems with certain aspects of the law. Its easier and more secure in my opinion to remote into a machine and do any sensitive work from there. Works especially well if the machine is located somewhere outside the laws jurisdiction.
  25. No one's calling you an idiot, we're just trying to help you with your question. If you can't be bothered to quantify your question with enough material then expect people to think some things.
