  1. With Vista releasing soon I'm on the dreaded search for a new computer to replace my old clunker. I hear alot of different things from family and friends that tell me to not upgrade my computer, they all say wait for something better and stuff like that. I have already decided that im gonna upgrade to a Alienware notebook sometime this year but with this recent hype about quad core, octo core processors im having second thoughts. Whats a ideal time to buy a new computer should i wait for quad core? DDR3? Is a core2 duo fine? If i shell out for a 2.5k laptop would it last me a while?
  2. What we need is OphCrack for NTLM hashes. Maby since with HD-DVD and Blueray being introduced to the market you can store alot more hash values.
  3. I would recomend a fingerprint lock if your gonna try and do usb they arent horriably expensive considering the added convenience and never having to forget to lock the door. http://www.nextag.com/fingerprint-lock-security/search-html The way your trying to approach it is just a standard usb port on a computer which is terriably insecure and someone can hackyour computer including your lock with a laptop by connnecting it to your usb port.
  4. I wish viruses were that simple then I wouldnt have to spend all that money on antivirus programs. Ha but then all these computer security guys would be out of work. But sadly thats my fantasy world real computer viruses have to be able to be self executing and reproduce.
  5. I finally tried mounting the volumes and from what i can tell it looks like just a shortcut to the other drive. Is there any difference i should take note of?
  6. could you explain mounting one of the volumes to a directory on the other hard drive better?
  7. Because its annoying to have two drives on my computer. I use my external hds for movies, shows, ect and i just find it annoying to sort the media between drives. I just want my 2 physical drives to show up as 1 drive is there any alternative to raid?
  8. I got quite a bit of questions here. First off can you raid external harddrives? I hear alot of raid 0 how if one drive fails the other drive will not work, but does raid 0 shorten the life of the harddrive? Lastly if i cant raid my external harddrives is there another way to make the two harddrives appear as one drive?
  9. I cannot see any practical use for this. Copy large files like movies on a usb hard drive is beyond slow and you would be caught before you finish one video. It would be better if you can make it like hack saw instead of a cmdline email client you could upload the files on a ftp server.
  10. I set up an FTP and Apache web server on my home comptuer. I port triggered all the correct ports: 21, 20, and 80 I even tested it form another computer outside the network but when i try and log in from school the website does not work and neither does the ftp server. I can understand why the ftp server wouldnt work but could they have blocked my site just because it is hosted form a residential isp?
  11. Making a full switch isnt really great if you wanna play all your games. Most games have not had linux releases but you can always just get a windows emulator except the performace isnt as great. As for drivers usb mouse and video cards made by nivida and ati have linux versions of the drivers. For wireless as long as your wireless card supports linux its fine.

Voltage Drop across led is usually 3.3volts for most leds. If you bought your BLUE led from alan's website then you will need a 68ohm resistor. The hookup wire isnt a necisity just normal insulated copper wire will do. Also just to clarify USB is 5volts.
  13. I never heard of 192.168.1.1 as being the default password. It is usually 192.168.0.1 besides that if you have physical access to the router just reset it there should be a little place in the back of the router that you can stick a paperclip in to reset it. Also most routers have the default password stuck on the bottom of the router you can always check there but i think he would have changed the password.
  14. who knows if the pentagon has wifi. And what your talking about is MAC spoofing which just makes the os report as a different mac address, your mac address is stored on a eeprom chip which cant really be modified easily you get a modified copy of the data sotred there and you have to find a eeprom programer which isnt cheap.
  15. You dont know that though since the people that know gets silenced by the government. The simple answer to your question is no you would not be likly to be tracked. Can they? sure would they? nope if your talking abotu a residental line in the middle of nowhere.
  16. i hope you didint yank the cmos out cuz it wouldnt work anymore then. yes the pulling out cmos and laptop battery would work also there should be cmos and bios jumpers to reset your bios/cmos settings. if all that doesnt work some cmos/bios manufactures have backdoor passwords just google it and then if that doesnt work you can always pay some place to get your cmos reprogramed
  17. Heinzanova's response isnt retarded if you tried to hack the pentagon of corse you can be tracked they probally have like a team of people that just monitor the network for suspicious traffic. I wouldnt be surprised if they are looking up your ip and busting you right now. But i mean if you were just on someone's home network and just happened to break their 128 bit wep password I mean noone would probally care unless your like downloading off bittorrent and really slowing down the network. I mean sure they can catch you even after you disconnect cuz routers usually keep a log or something and they can get your mac adress and bust you but if its just a residential line who would bother.
  18. ok i tested the compression Content: 12 mp3 Software: Winrar, kgb archive Uncompressed: 69.2 kgb archive: 68.2 normal compression 16min Winrar: 68.7 normal compression 2min kgb compression ratio: 98.5% winrar compression ratio: 99.3& Final Thoughts: Sure i saved 500KB but the 14min time difference is too much. Their claim for mp3 compression is 95.5% which is a little better than the results i got. I choose mp3 because it was the only thing i had redily avaliable after testing it i got to the conclusion kgb isnt as great as it seems. I saved 500KB but at the cost of 8times slower than winrar not worth it.
  19. hey its like that claim of being able to store hundreds of gigs on a letter size paper
  20. http://portableapps.com/apps/development/xampp Apache MySQL PHP + PEAR MiniPerl OpenSSL phpMyAdmin XAMPP Control Panel Webalizer Mercury Mail Transport System FileZilla FTP Server SQLite ADODB Zend Optimizer XAMPP Security all that for just around 30megs I dont see why would you need a webserver on usb 1st off its gonna be slow. 2nd off if your gonna be taking it on the go most comptuers would not have port 80 open

    FTP help?

I just recently set up a FTP server at home since I was fed up with the slow connections of sending files though msn and aim and the free filehosting services just wasnt cutting it. For the FTP server im using to activate PASV it said that you need ports 1024 and above is that safe or should i use PORT commands which only requires port 20 and 21? Also I do not understand the difference between port forwarding and port triggers, i know port tiggering is a form of port forwarding thats about it.
  25. I'd feel bad taking that little kid's ps3.
