  1. Most internet filtering appliances block both ip and domain names. Such as the 8e6 r3000, a common one. The best way to by pass these devices is just buy a proxy or ssh hosting service, around 5bucks a month. Another idea is to ask your net admins nicely to just unblock hak5.org.
  2. I plan on buying an external Raid 5 array. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822101049 I am wondering if you need a raid controller to use this product? Or would any old esata port work with this drive?
  3. Does anyone know of a good low profile cpu heat sink/fan for the socket LGA 775? At work we purchased a few ati x1900xt just to find they don't fit in our low profile Dell Optiplex 745 cases. (5-10cm of the card is blocked by the cpu heat sink) I need a heat sink similar to http://www.silverstonetek.com/products/p_c...ro&area=usa but for the socket LGA 775. I have checked a few brands but they only sell monster heat sinks.
  4. Yea a free file hosting site like fileden.com would work.
  5. I have 2 machines, one a laptop one a desktop. My desktop has 3 drives that i want my notebook to be able to access over the lan. I've tried FTP but movies didn't really work off FTP. I've also tried windows sharing but theres security issues because i want password authentication. I've looked at freenas but i need a fully functional OS still. Is there any sorta program i could get that can allow me to access my computer and be able to have all the same functionality of being on the drive itself and keep the OS functionality on my desktop.
  6. Recently Asus released the Asus G1S-A1. I have seen tons of people talk about how great it is and the specs are pretty amazing. 15.4", Santa Rosa, Core 2 T7500, Geforce 8600GT,2 GB ram, the works and it only costs under 2000bucks. Seems like a pretty good deal, i was wondering though how long would this thing last if i wanted to play new games? Also i have seen some amateur benchmarking on the 8600m GT with 3dmark06 and the scores were pretty poor for a next gen video card, less than 4000. Is it because of crappy vista drivers or does this card just suck. I was hoping of scores similar to the 8600 GTS
  7. Clearly you've never had the (dis)pleasure to encounter old Compaq computers. :P I think a few old, shitty laptops did this to cut costs aswell. I guess not I never touch budget machines. I guess I'm lucky.
  8. If you read it carefully you would notice that he gets no image from his monitor so a live cd wouldnt help him and a harddrive would be irrelevant to this problem. Not if the BIOS is set to the hard drive and the hard drive is bad. I had a Compaq that had the BIOS on the hard drive and someone formatted it and had no way to configure the bios afterwards. I had the same problem and all lights would come on, beep, etc, but no screen would show up. It flickered black and white lines. I eventually managed to put XP on there, but that was after a long bout with a modified install of win98 in order to get xp on there becasue there was no bios and not any way to boot from cd, I had to use an old floppy drive to boot the pc, load a ramdisk, format the c drive and then modify the win98 install to boot from the c drive, not the floppy, then put xp on there. It was a pain in the arse, but I did manage to get it fixed. Your BIOS isnt stored on a harddrive it is always on a EEPROM or Flash Memory. Most likely your bootstrap loader was gone. Personally I wouldn't even go near Geeksquad unless i knew the person personally and probably just paid him directly.

  10. Since your talking about speakers i assume you dont know what post beeps are since you dont need speakers for them (they beep like right after the fan finishes reving up). They sound kinda like the polymorphic or w/e cell phone ringtones except its monotoned and its coming from the motherboard. Also if you think its a powersupply problem (which is somewhat doubt) just check the voltages on the p1 connector with a multimeter (with it still connected to the mobo). My bet is still on video.
  11. Your first approach should be to replace the video card and or monitor with a known working one or switch to intergrated. Also do you have any POST beeps? One is normal for most BIOS. And 1.5gb is the official minimal requirement for Windows XP home and pro. Edit I also hope you didn't listen Atmo especially the cardboard box you risk firing your motherboard.
  12. Yea hes basically asking how to use a proxy heres some sites that can help. IE 6 and below http://support.microsoft.com/kb/135982 Firefox (you have to search though it) http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/options Opera http://www.opera.com/support/search/view/3...p;platformID=12 Simple googleing works too you really should try just googleing i found all the above in less than 5minutes I guaranteed though they blocked you from accessing options in the browsers. If that is true i recommend OperaTor or Torpark or any other portable Tor browser were you can just put in your flash drive and run of there. Oh yea write in English next time not gibberish. I found the sites faster than reading your post.
  13. alright thx ill take a look
  14. I just recently reformated my computer (like 2 weeks ago) but recently i have been getting errors. When i leave my computer on to seed in (Bit comet) like over night in the morning I would find all my open applications frozen and unable to open any new applications (even task manager and notepad) If i try to open any program i would get the error The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on ok to terminate the application. The problem is fixed once i restart my computer. (which is a huge pain) I have done some googleing but all the results are application specific. I am not sure if its bit comet causing the problems I haven't really tried to check since i seed at night but I will check tonight. Please Help, I really don't want to reformat again.
  15. what live cd supports ntfs mounting right out the box
  16. For some reason my external hdd had a bunch of folders (the windows update ones) and they are right protected so i can't delete it. Normally i would just reformat but the drive is too big to backup any ideas on how i can remove the folders?

    Ipodlinux

Its impossible to break your ipod with ipodlinux. (unless your talking about smashing your ipod in frustration) it can all be fixed with the hp formating tool. But that was all in the old days now ipodlinux comes with step by step next>next>finish installations and it will install all addons and stuff automaticly.
  18. Well the 1st time i used it was almost a year ago. But then recently on the 1st hak5 live show i used it again for the streaming and as many people expericened so many artifacts.
  19. aright ill try it out again
  20. No i dont overclock and when they say it supports MKV and h264 i natually assume it works right out of the box (well download in this case).
  21. I'v used VLC before, the actual product is VLS for the streaming but i wasnt really happy when i used VLC before for watching movies the video were very distorted and lots and lots of artifacts i'd get yellow blocks all over the place and since then iv been staying away from VLC and VLS well its going to be my last resort. But thanks anyway.
  22. i thought ipod linux had a nice gui step by step installer so you dont need to go though all this command line crap
  23. Im looking for some server programs that can allow me to stream video and/or music to any computer on my homenetwork. I have a server running windows xp which im planing making it a linux box once a get a new computer (so preferbaly the program is multi platform). Though some quick googleing i came up with VLS (im not a big fan of VLC) and Lanovision (which has no linux support). I havnt tried them yet but im justing wondering have anyone of you used those or do you know any comerical products or other open source ones. Ideally i want a multi container support (mkv ogm avi mp4 etc) and multi codec (DVIX, XVID, h264 mpeg-4 etc) and cross player support (web, windows media player 10, zoomplayer etc) and an ondemand libarary. ~thanks
  24. lol i use the flash drives i find stuck in the usb ports of public computers :P.
