  1. Im still messing around with it - i actually really like it! Any ideas on how I can configure internet access to each vlan?
  2. hey sorrow! i just found a copy of it at the bay. it looks really good so far - is there any way of adding the devices that i have in particular or is it limited to what is given? I got myself a 3550-48 switch and a 2950-24 of which i want to focus on the 3550. I saw that you can also export the configs - its a long short but ill ask anyway - is it possible to import these to the physical switch? if so, how would i go about doing so? Im still trying to get my head around igrp and rip, not having much luck :( i've erased configs like 100 times lol
  3. I'd give it a miss, you'll get bored after an episode or two!
  4. The level of IT these days that is being taught is appauling - I am a network administrator for a number of schools in the south of london and its a joke what I am seeing. Things have changed alot (very quickly) and the syllabus should do too. A programing language of some sort should definately be introduced in secondary schools and then developed in college then uni rather than introduced in college and then onto uni. Im still young myself and was at school 8 or so years ago i think and i did a GNVQ in IT which again was a doddle...
  5. I never made an effort to watch it but I did if it was on... comedy wise it wasnt the greatest to be honest lol
  6. @hex - Ah I see! - not a problem, I think Im going to have to go down the network hub route and hope for the best @digip - thanks for the links, I think I'm going to purchase the AnywhereUSB, theres one on ebay atm. As for AutoConnect, ESXi needs to see it before it can be set to automatically pass - I would have thought that it would have made sense to allow the use of hardware identifiers filters in case of situations like this. Almost like MAC address filtering in Windows
  7. @hex - Great! Do you by chance know if the iPhone is passed through using the devices properly? i.e will I be able to sync with it with the hub? If possible could you demo it? @digip - I can pass through using Workstation on a W7 Host but not with ESXi - I think its a an issue with just ESXi rather than vmware as a whole. The guest is also a W7 box but the same happens with a XP guest, both with vmtools installed. I cant even bloody pass it through to Linux boxes either! lol
  8. iTunes WiFi-Sync is bit of a fail. Only ever works once after its been sync'd with the cable then repeat - but thats another matter lol I was lookin at this hub as well as the Digi AnywhereUSB and have even emailed Digi to confirm that it will work. Reason why I want to make sure it works before coughing up the cash is because having never used the device, I would assume that it works by assigning an IP address to the device connected to each port - once assigned you can then add your storage media, printers etc which is great but how will it work with iPhones if that is the case? Do you use this particular device yourself? *edit* http://www.digi.com/products/usb/anywhereusb#overview This is the device from Digi (5 port)
  9. The controller is added as default on all VMs - the option to add a USB device is there but only enabled when a device which is available for pass through is connected which is what I've tried with the above results. Also, I'm running ESXi 5 - I havent done any updates as I didnt see any available from the site when downloading the site. Also - with regards to unmounting - how would I go about doing that? But the question then is, doesnt it needed to be mounted to be able to see it to enable the pass through? I cant enable to the pass through currently because its not showing in vSphere but dmesg via ssh shows it connected. This is so odd! :(
  10. Ah sorry i forgot to mention - its my iPhone that I am trying to connect to the W7 Guest! (will also need to attach my iPad also) It doesnt need to be USB2 as I already have a USB over Cat5 extender which slows the speeds down but works on the physically machine that was virtualised. The usb drive i used as a test that did go over was a standard usb2 16gb flash drive. The phone is getting power as its charging with the USB cable but the host isnt showing it up as a device that can be transferred to the VM. I SSH'd into the server and ran dmesg and the phone does show up as an Apple iPhone but I still consider myself a linux noob and cant tell whether it has registered the drivers or not. I feel this may be the issue, drivers may need to be installed but I really dont know where to begin, let alone if i am right :/
  11. Hi all - in my quest to remove as much as hardware in my network as much as possible I have gone and virtualised my windows iTunes box to ESXi Now the issue is as follows - I CANT PASS MY USB THROUGH TO THE GUEST :| I have tested with standard usb drives and it works but not the one that matters most :| Has anyone had this before? I am searching google and cant find anything as of yet which is upsetting :( Cheers guys
  12. I found this switch which I think is capable of IGRP - link is this okay do you think? also, do you happen to have any reading material or advice on how to setup igrp?
  13. As with my previous threads I have mentioned that I want to setup vlans at home (on a budget of course) and I have decided that I may aswell go down the cisco path so that i can a) have a proper solution in place B ) have some hands on experiencing with configuring the equipment - why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone ey. I have a Windows background, server and client administration and can setup vlan scopes etc but havent had much exposure to cisco config - I can read and understand cisco config but havent actually configured equipment in a live environment. at present the only equipment i have is a 2950-24 which allows for basic vlan config 802.1q. What I plan to do is as follows: Modem/Router - WAG120N - 192.168.1.254 Server 08 - DHCP dishing out 192.168.1.x 2.x 3.x... And then of course the switch (2 trunk ports - (1) Internet from WAG120N (2)To my ESXi box - vSwitch with vlan tagging) Problem is that I need a another (possibly layer 3?) switch that supports routing to allow for internet access to all vlans. Unless I'm wrong? In theory I understand what needs to be done but when I think more into the actual config I get a little confused. My scopes will obviously have gateways of 1.254 2.254 3.254, as far as I can see - only 1.254 will have access to the net. does this mean 2.254 and 3.254 need to be bridged with 1.254? (if so how would you do that? Can I actually keep the WAG120N or will I need something that supports multiple gateways? Im not shy in purchasing new equipment but dont want to spend more than I have to, for this will just be used at home. As always i appreciate all of your help in advance :)
  14. Im making a bad habit of this lol - I figured it out! Banged my head against a brick wall a few times then found out where it was supposed to go - Configuration - Licensed Features - Edit then add new license!
  15. Evening All, I'm a little confused here... I know ESXi is free but I have just setup a dedicated box for my ESXi server and it shows as in evaluation mode - Also when I log in with vSphere it shows up that I have 60 days until the end of eval. On the vmWare site I have a VMware vSphere Hypervisor 5 License but I have no clue as to where I need to put the license :| I've googled and I keep seeing that all licenses need to go into the vCenter Server... :/ Help? lol Thanks in advance!
  16. I just want to be able to dish to scopes - 192.168.1.x and 2.x and have them setup on their own individual NICs therefore negating the need for a 802.1q router/switch which are often costly and can be avoided by using multiple standard switches. Cheap and cheerful but it works. I think I might know what the issue is - I think I might not have configured the firewall rules correctly - I will need to rebuild the box (been messing around with other distros) and then re-test. I know for the amount of devices I will be running - running two scopes with the 24 bit subnet is rather excessive but it gives me a little more peace of mind :P
  17. :D Wooo - I wait in anticipation
  18. I still havent been able to figure it out ahhh. As I host personal sites also - what I want to do is keep my external boxes away from my internal boxes - im sure my personal data/boxes are still accessible but it increases security somewhat
  19. Have a look at what Mr-Protocol suggested - the OM2P - looks like it would be perfect! I want to build one too but I am unable to build firmware
  20. I agree with the above - I would love to see the interceptor revived - I want to possibly try building one of these but the hardware is non-existant from my searches :( Someone start a poll!
  21. Woop Woop - Just what I wanted to hear. Cheers mate
  22. Out of all the ones you've used so far, what would you say was the best? I tried to install ClearOS on my machine but had the issue with the screen reso but then VM'd it and was playing it - looks cool but cant see a vLan setup area. Im probably going to go back to PFSense but was a little lazy and couldnt be bothere to burn it to my USB earlier =[
  23. Another quick question I just wanted to throw out there real quick - Am I right to believe that If I had a AP51 (straight out of the box - Brand New with no previous flash) That I can flash it straight away without any other work using the Freifunk Tool and Sebs firmware?
  24. I have two switches which I was using in the setup to test. But I even bypassed that and connected my laptop straight to the NIC using a standard patch and a xover cable. Still got a loopback add. Reading over those links now, thanks. Have you ever used ClearOS?
