but debian-from-scratch would happilyUbuntu is a good choice if you haven't a clue where to start. However, it's not nearly "the deep end" if you wanna get stuck in. Of course, it is still Linux based, no-one can dispute that, so it still does everything it should, it's just a bit more bubble-wrapped than... almost every other distro ever. On the plus side, you can generally install drivers easier due to Canonical (the guys who distribute Ubuntu) allowing closed source drivers to be installed with a couple of button presses.
It's not, however, a good choice if your machine is lacking in power (and specifically RAM), it'll curl up and die on any machine with a lower spec than it thinks it needs at any given time.
this is completely true
for a server debian is probably better than ubuntu
but maybe if it's your first server ubuntu is a better choice than debian
but ubuntu will not work on a computer with 32 mb ram and 300 Mhz cpu

I hope to god Ubuntu server doesn't come with a GUI!
Friends don't let friends install ubuntu!
my recommendation for the high end is the same for the low end Debian!

I love aptitude too much but freeBSD (once you get it installed) is very solid
-
do not put a GUI on it, just install something simple and learn the command line.
I like debian but it's not newbie friendly

all you really need is a router(not a home nat device) and something DNS to get the CORE of the internet
TCP/IP wants to work, it's a very good protocol. IMHO

....and I call myself a geek... *tear*the highest comcast offers(in my area at least) is 8 megaBITs per second, that's 1 Megabyte per second.
I would say call them. If you get a reponce to the effect of "Well we just tested your connection and it seems fine" then they have temporeraly tuned off the throteling on your connection.

....wow and y'all call your self geeks?
comcast right?
the highest comcast offers(in my area at least) is 8 megaBITs per second, that's 1 byte per second. File sizes are mostly in bytes not bits so it takes some time to get used to that. comcast also offers PowerBoost that will "bump" your connection to 20 megabits/s, but ony for the first 10MB
(everything on the comcast site says MB for megabyte but it may be Mb for megabit and the web developers are just stupid)

you're trying to connect from windows into ubtuntu?
or from ubuntu into windows?
-
can a MBP even boot from USB?
-
most laptops don't have a reset on board but if you went with towers you could wire up a wire or two to the reset switch on the mobo and plug that into a serial port... I'm sure out there somewhere is a way to force a reset to one box from another

again k1u http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypocrisy

replacing someone boot sector with hello world...
that's just funny
-
...I'm confused, he's defending you, why are you flaming him?
-
well?Java is easy. C[++] stomps all over Java in speed.
Which one of these is the one you can compile and write to the boot sector of a computer and it would just display "Hello World"?
Now that is a waste of assembly...
How is that a waste? Do you even understand what that is?
Yes.....
how is it a waist?
