OtterFox
Two hours ago I decided that making a website would be fun and educational for me. I would like to know if and domain regeistering places are better than others? Also what should I use to create the page on Linux (all I know is frontpage for windows), I will be doing the html coding by myself but i might want to do some tweeking with someting else. Lastly what should I run Apache on my server?
Famicoman
As for what to run on your server, Apache seems to be the best bet. However, don't use the current version if you want to use PHP 5. I heard the are incompattable.
PoyBoy
As for being incompatible, I had a PHP5 proxy running on apache 2.2.(something) on linux. Personally I like Flash alot and am bound to piss some people off here by saying so. So, linux is out of the question for my development, but linux kicks ass for the actual server itself

OtterFox
Better not use JavaScript then. OK Ill remember that. No popup boxes then, not that I have any reason to use them

PoyBoy
You could always buy one of VaKo's warez CD's that he kidnaps small children and makes them sell them on the streets of london Of course then you would have to stick with windows. Damnation.

VaKo
On windows I use notepad2, which is basically notepad with contextual coloring. You could also do with looking at xammp from apache friends, its just about the easyest webserver setup you can imagine. http://www.cssbasics.com/ <--- does what it says on the tin http://www.csscreator.com/version2/pagelayout.php <--- good for quickly making basic layouts http://alistapart.com/ <--- good for more in depth tutorials http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html <--- quick server When it comes to site design, the best way of learning is working with a simple text editor. Something with contextual highlighting is good. That way, instead of reliying on a wysiwyg interface, you remeber what everthing does. That way when IE6 cocks up your code, you will find it easiyer to fix it. Also, Digg is an excellent resource as it lists loads of tutorials.
