I did a how to on linux software raid , from a ubuntu server POV ,

software raids are ok, untill you system dies and you need to recover data...

Then connect the drives to another system and rebuild the RAID using the same software. Software RAIDs also allow for expansion of the RAID, however, this should be done after backups have been made.

As long as your OS is mirroed, then the storage is in a separate, say raid 5, recovery should be simple.
