  1. I agree with some with what has been said, but I think a GTX 280 is overkill for a 19" monitor. I would at least bring it down to the 260 if you want to stay with Nvidia. I would go for at least the 4GB RAM, don't bother putting in 2, take advantage of DDRII being cheap. The Antec 300 was mentioned, that's a good cheap case, it's very simple but the two fans do a good job of cooling. But are pretty loud on the high settings. I built a system in one of them not too long ago. The P5QL Pro was mentioned, I prefer the P5QL-E for a P43 based board. You went for an Nforce chipset, which has been getting some bad press, but I've ran them in the past and they do a pretty good job.

I think the selection you posted is pretty good, just maybe tweak it to get 4GB RAM. The board you mentioned is more thant say the P5QL Pro and the E, so you could maybe switch to one of them and get the 4GB RAM. I'm basing this on the prices over here, I assume they're about the same in relation.

  2. Old thread but hey... I was looking around Uni's the other day, as I'm thinking about going back. I started Computing for Intelligent Systems back in 2005; there were not enough people so they killed the course off... But like said all that separated me from someone doing Graphics and Animation was maybe 2 modules. My main lecturer was a mathematician, openly admitting he had no interest in computers, and had his last PC for 6 years. The course was also largely based around Java.

Anyway, I noticed this as I found it funny actually having hack in the title BSc (Hons) Ethical Hacking & Countermeasures, so I'm sure there are similar courses around the world, this is what the course covers:

    What you study

    Stage 1

Computer hardware and networking; computer programming; basic computer hacking ethics.

    Stage 2

Further study of computers and networks and ethical hacking.

    Stage 3

Computer networking; Linux Networks; Project Management & Team Working; Ethical Computer Hacking; Professional Development.

    Stage 4

Network Management; Mobile Phone Technology; Penetration Testing; Forensic Computing; Industrial Group Project.

My little advice would be to look at what job you realistically think you would like to do, then visit a few job sites, or companies like oil or something. Just so you can see what they require, then look what course best suits you. Or rather their needs. They usually list something, even if it is just lotus notes

  3. We find that users of I-Doser fall into one of 3 categories: Susceptible to Binaural Beats, Originally Unsusceptible to Binuaral Beats, and Immune to Binaural Beats.

That's from their site, so not gonna work for everyone.

  4. Most of those mods were done by Wes I seem to remember.

I wouldn't mind some of the golden oldies. We had a C64 in the house, but I never really used it. I vaguely remember using the Amstrad, my Dad would make text adventure games. I wanted my own system so my Dad got me an Amiga 500. I don't know if either of these were popular in the states though. But I always like seeing what people have done with them.

  5. Yeah some interesting stuff. Made me have a look on irongeek for the first time in a while. Past two episodes have been great IMO. Not that the rest are shite but... All I need now is a proper live one, although maybe you's are trying to behave and not get gished on air, since the movie to Rev3.

  6. We haven't been doing the live episodes recently since we went weekly. Although, we do host LAN parties, and sometimes cut on the Ustream from our living room for those.

I hope they're not dead forever...

  7. @someoneE1se cheers, been saving that  8)

@voteforbush, that happens to be one of the worst ones to have, because no one is quite sure what error message 0020 means.  I've heard people say the motherboard is bent, so you could check that.  Others say it's overheating, but I don't think it is as simple as that.  Many with 0020 are dead, maybe you can fix it and let us know what you did.

  8. You're meant to have 3 years now.  Mind was void before it died.  If you hold the sync button and press the eject button 4 times, this will give you a code which can give you the answer to your problem.  Or at least point you in the direction.  When you say you have the new one, do you mean the ones with 2 heatsinks for the GPU?

Did you overheat the console after removing the x clamps?  What I have found works; change the clamps to the bolts, cook the thing, then tighten the bolts when it is hot. Don't do it too much though, as you don't want to bend the motherboard.  Stand to cool and serve.  There is the chance it's proper fucked mind you.

If everything fails all you need is a hammer and a packet of condoms, if smacking it doesn’t fix it, fuck it...

  9. It's shit being you...

Regardless of what you have done, it isn't a nice thing.  But you must have something they want, even if you're cleared of what YOU think it is they were after.  They will try their hardest to find something.  Looks bad for them if they don't.  If they do have to return your items, good luck with that.  I have friends who got a few things taken, some by forensics, this was about 5 years ago.  They didn't even get their shoes back.

  10. how well does the velcro hold ?

Pretty well, better than expected.  And doesn't seem to be affected by heat, the PC was running when I took those photos, though obviously unplugged the chipset fan.  The velcro was solid in place, even though the heatsink was quite warm.

  11. Well, if anyone wants to buy/trade I have an Xbox 360, I've haxord it to display red lights.  So as you can tell this is not your everyday 360. This does not play all original xbox games, or many 360 games for that matter, it does however come with a 20g HDD.  Grab yourself a bargain for the weekend.  Will part ex for new PS3, or Elite.

    Offers?

  12. HD0: 30°C

    HD1: 32°C

    CPU1: 39°C

    CPU1: 39°C

    GPU CORE: 48°C

    AMBIENT: 36°C

    MOTHERBOARD: 22°C

    CPU overclocked 2.66 to 3.4

GPU core overclocked 351 to 450.

I'm a cheap ass student.  So my cooling is far from perfect, but does the job. The heatsink on the CPU is a stock one from Pentium D.  The fan is a 12cm cool by color Akasa, with Asus Q-Fan turned on, so not too noisy.  I have an old Dr. Cooler CPU cooler on my GPU, took the temp down by 9°C.  I have the original GPU fan velcroed to the northbridge heatsink, which seemed to stop the system from crashing. Northbridge and CPU using startech silver grease.

  13. Haha, yeah I see now, I just noticed it on recent releases, didn't bother watching it just saw Pats face and assumed it was Tekzilla.  All I meant by the firewall thing, it's been done by many now.  No point doing things everyone else has done, unless you add something new.

  14. I'm gonna have a stab at this.  I think they are saying, the material isn't relevant to the average viewer.  As for the cigarette comment, s/he is either calling you a bunch of fags.  Or, s/he is going into the whole cigarette advertising of making smoking look cool.  As in, you're not cool if you don't smoke.  Translated into, Hak.5 - you're not l337 if you don't have the latest gadgets.  Possibly the eeePC.  And more segments should be done using older systems that people are more likely to have lying around and don't mind opening up. No warranties to void I guess.

Anyway, if I was somewhere close, the only problem I have with this is;  I think most that watch these shows might appreciate the odd how to on some older toys, but most of these are probably common knowledge or are at least documented all over the web.  And from reading the forums before I joined, I see the likes of Chris want to bring newer items to the show, so you see something new and keeps you coming back for more.  Which you are probably not going to get from turning an old box into a firewall *cough* Tekzilla*cough*

If I was completely wrong, then all my ramblings were your fault.  I hope you're happy with yourself.
