  1. Call me cazy, but aren't molex to sata power adapters only a couple of bucks? It seems like it would be worthwhile to go that route rather than splicing connections.
  2. Hmm, this sounds like a really interesting idea. I'm not sure what you plan to accomplish with the laser, but the idea of incorporating a ddr mat sounds really neat. If I ever get around to getting a wiimote, I think I going to try this.
  3. While I do agree that there is an obvious bottleneck created by running the ram-disk through a sata controller, it still generates a large enough performance increase to outperform a multi-disk raid 0 setup. Though, I only recommended the device because it was the closest product that represented a modern version Moonlit's idea, without using the ram that is used from the processor. I still resolve that the performance per dollar ratio of a hard drive is much better than using a ram disk.
  4. While I agree with moonlite that the feasibility of this project is a bit questionable, gigabyte does make a pci card which allow you to use some ram as a hard disk. http://techreport.com/articles.x/9312 You could conceivably install the os on the ram disk and then connect to it from a floopy or flash drive loaded with grub or lilo. Though, performance per dollar, I would say it would be a better value just to buy a raptor hard drive.
  5. How fast is your cable internet connection running right now? To be honest, I don't think modifying the modem will really offer you any better download speeds. As far as I know, the speed of the internet connection is regulated by the ISP rather than the modem itself. Also, even if you were to drastically increase the available bandwidth, single files and web sites will still run about the same speed due to bandwidth throttling on their end. So, I would resolve that even if you could get a decent speed increase, the actual usage of the hack would be well, mediocre.
  6. Every once in a while I try to switch over to linux, but there is always some issue that gets in the way. Though, the last time I used ubuntu, it was pretty nice. I ended up switching back to windows due to some issues with flash (didn't feel like fixing it). Now I have a macbook running os x in addition to my windows machine, which seems to be a good balance.
