I am trying to run Backtrack in Virtual box on ubuntu. The adapter works with both. I am puzzled about how to set it up for Virtual box. Any Ideas?

Try to put a piece of aluminium foil over a can say 4 inches around. create a shallow dish shape. Point the ALFA at it, move the Alfa towards or away from it to experiment. I have no idea what this does. I would like to learn more about it. I am going to try different shapes and read up about RF. I could talk a little about marine radio, loran c, line of sight, the fact the earth is curved but this is not important. BB

I use the alfa it works well I get good speed with it. 900kbs I can get faster in the middle of the night. Out of the box it has good distance. To judge the distance I walk with my phone looking for public access points. This gives me an idea of how what kind of distance I get. I have a ton of access points to in the area. I cant say how far it goes this is something for someone else to do.

Please describe how you have your Wifi Hardware setup? I will start, I have a linksys 54g router with a mounting bracket to mount it too the wall. My laptop has the ALFA adapter. I have a Wifi to Ethernet bridge for my desktop. My netbook is standard off the shelf. All of our phones are wifi enabled. I am looking at some new antennas.

One could have fun creating a rogue access point. If you have two wireless adapters. Send them where you want. The memo was sent out to a certain operating system crowd. I know any open network should be treated as unsafe. A good suggestion vpn to a safe zone. Lots of business owners in downtown Sarasota have WIFI but you have to know or ask the waitress for the pass phrase for some. That is something for another post. Even downtown Sarasota has their own public WIFI. They have a proxy and you have go their mc d's like sign in page. The proxy probably blocks everything including HAK5. Lots of businesses have wifi you just have to troll with your laptop and or phone. I use wiggle WIFI for android I have a gps to on it to map them. Any downtown city has WIFI you just have to look and be careful.

Back to business, What kinds of set ups have you guys come up with. I am going to play with a pringles can for fun. I also want to take a piece of aluminium flashing to create a dish style antenna. I look at dish style antennas, the antenna points toward the dish. I think the dish collects the signal. What is line of sight? I want to see what other people think and use. What do you guys use to securly over write a disk(encrypt)? There is dariks boot and nuke. As for as disk images and pxe for a roll out. Just want to know what you think. I know clonezilla will do this.

I am wondering if anyone has used any digital recorders. Like the ones made by zoom. I play guitar and need to record things I create when I fool around with things. When I make something up I want to play it back to see if it has any substance. Maybe build on it from there. I can't bring the Ubuntu Studio box everywhere. Let me know what you might have done.

Do anyone on this board like to fish or kayak fish? I want to thank you guys for the help you give. My kayak has a Garmin Gps and fish finder. I use a cd as a visual distress signal. I have not gotten around to it but I am going to mount my camera to my kayak.Anyone else fish or kayakfish?

i am moving to an area that has a different ISP. They are more restrictive. I have a SFTP server setup for off site file backups. I will not use much bandwidth or bother the cap of my new cable Internet provider. I know their thoughts on netflix and xbox. I do this on my current cable Internet provider they do not care.

I fixed my own problem the other day with the web site I could not get to. I changed the Mac address on my Linksys router (laugh). The common though is these are permanent. When anyone asks I say it is like a Vin number on a car or physical address. That does not change unless the equipment is changed. The key word is physical. My thinking is how do I change my vin number or physical address without buying a new car or moving not going to happen. I understand pppoe and Isps that want the Mac address in a database. Also radius products (steel belted radius) might need this. Could this have changed. Is there an IEEE doc or 802 thing. Thanks you guys are great.

I found something: Utah open source. They have Hacker Public radio. What are your thoughts. I was listening to something about asterisk trixbox and freeswitch. I was wondering if there are other open source groups and public radio shows. I could start one but I do not know enough about computers. I need to learn more about Linux and Cisco and where networking is going. These shows are protected by free speech.

I was wondering if there is anyone here who likes to fish, kayak or kayak fish. The kayak fish activity is something that I first learned about in 2002. I first started fly fishing in south Florida for Bass and pan fish. I have caught many other fish with the kayak including bass and spotted sea trout. I know people in off of Ft. Lauderdale Catch Mahi Mahi, Sailfish and other big-game and flats fish like the bonefish. People is CA catch Calico Bass White, Sea Bass, Yellow Tail, and, many others. Yeah There are a few ways to do this one complain to the isp that your cable modem is not working. Or Linksys routers can clone Mac addresses and some will let you put one in. Or you can Change the router. Not as big a deal as it seems. But this messes with the teaching theory that a mac address is solid like a physical building address or Vin number. Oh well.

Changed the last digit of the mac address on my router. I get a new ip address from my Isp. Every thing works. Don't know why but it works. Thanks

Here is one of those questions. I cant access my web host from home. I tried 3 computers. Here is where it gets interesting. I can get to it via At&t and Verizon cell phones. I can from my Isp at the office. The wifi hotspot downtown. It even works at one of my neighbors. Any Ideas.

Any of the packet analysers will show what is going on just get his Ip and Mac address if you can. Laptop get the Mac add for both Wireless and Eth adapter. Any Multicast Traffic will do this. Which a lot of video and voice apps use. Might want to look into a better router or a separate router and a managed switch so you can limit band width for application like Voip (64kbs). I have not researched if putting him on his own vlan will help. Mike

I had a thought about something for any of us that work for ourselves. Not just computer people,musicians,artists,and other types of freelances workers. This is self explanatory. What are your costs. What is your income. Costs= expenses which could be, sales tax quarterly taxes inventory repairs.(this could be cat v cable guitar strings mileage meals as an example. Costs-Expenses=Income. This will give you a picture of what you are spending how much income is coming in. Where you need to cut spending.

This is not a real computer question. I have an oki c3400n needs a drum. I am wondering if I should replace it with an all in one laser printer. The drum costs about 50 dollars. I can get a samsung refurb all in one laser for 100. I do not need color.
