  1. If you are seeding I don't think you will find you need much of a download speed, but you can't cut it off completely because the requests from people leeching have to be sent to you, so therefore downloaded so you can start sending stuff to them.

It shouln't use much but still needs it.

But buying a dual graphics card laptop is stupid. It means that its not a laptop because its not portable. You won't be able to use it on the go because the battery life will be terrible and you still won't get the performance of a decent desktop.

Plus dual graphics solutions arn't really finalised yet and have limited supports, you might as well go for a laptop with one decent graphics card, some portability and battery life and save yourself a wad of cash.

  3. I like the cast cards but it seems the weapon cards are seriously lacking. It would also be good to use images of the same style, i noticed the joystick one was drawn and the cat5e was croped picture. Didn't look particularly good.

But keep up the good work.

  4. It depends on what you are running really I suppose, but it does stop /allow you to stop various programs/utilities/spyware from "phoning home" - and so your internet connection is abit more stealthed. However if you are the sort of person who knows every program/service that is running on your system and are spyware free all the time then its probably not needed from this perspective, but another issue is intrusion into your network , yes someone may get in through one avenue but if each computer is running a software firewall then at least all your machines are not compromised at the same time.

Firstly why would I care that programs phone home? I own all the programs that I am using so if I get better support and updates, as long as I say yes its fine.

Spyware is not a problem unless you like visiting the sort of sites which host it, which are places to get warez or porn. Neither of which I have a need to go to so don't.

Intrusion onto my network is practically impossible (I won't say completely because with time nothing is). Even if you find a weird network port and plug-in you won't be able to get anything.

I think people who run software firewalls are the people that are scared of using the internet. The only time that I would use one is if I had a direct connection to the internet or I was at a wireless access point other than my own.

  5. Really you should be running a software firewall as well - a hardware one will not still let traffic through from the internal side.

But why would I want to stop out going connections? Theres nothing here on that my machine that would be a problem.

You need a software firewall if you like visiting the red light district of the internet, download random programs that will "speed up your internet" and opening every e-mail attachment that you are sent.

Also the fact that my network has a very complicated set up which also leads me to believe that i don't need one.

  6. You keep pimping modX, once my server finishes compiling i'm going to give it a whirl.

I like it because it gives you are very nice back end with AJAX, which makes it very useful for running on servers on slowish connection because it only requests what it needs, not the whole page again.

And it is built very much around the person setting it up doing things themselves. Like designing themes and customising it. If you just want something to install, pick a theme from a list and use then its probably not very good.

  7. Probably not, and it wouldn't be worth threatening them with anything legal.

I'm sorry to hear they deleted it, my old school keeps work of previous students for 3 years after they have left now that they have some decent storage capability.

I know schools have to keep backups of work, usually on Tape drives but they usually only go back one week with an image taken everynight at midnight and then the same tape used last monday would be rewritten the next monday. So if they deleted it within the last week then they might have it.

If not then I doubt they will be able to return your work to them.

Also are you sure they have deleted your work, not just stopped you accessing the work now that you have left, or that they have taken one/some of the servers of line for maintence?

I suppose the morale of this story is keep your own backups and don't trust any network administrators.

Also if they need persuading, a nice box of biscuits will often do the trick with any technicians.

  8. im guessing its not financially viable to put that technology on the ap's for a company thats buying and installing thousands of them!

That would be because they are idiots and not using wonderful open-source software.

I'll have go and try this out sometime when my laptop has a operating system on it.

  9. AMD AM2 Athlon 64 3200 Orleans Core, 2.0GHz, 512KB Cache, Retail - £67.94

    Gigabyte GA M51GM-S2G NF430, Socket AM2, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 800, SATA II, SATA RAID, uATX - £52.83

    1GB (2X512MB) Corsair Value Select, DDR2 PC4200 (533), 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12 - £53.99

    Total - £174.76

That motherboard also has on-board gfx which will keep the price down of the computer and will last you until you can afford a gfx card. All you need in that is a hard drive, dvd-rom and case with psu.

  10. Where are you wetelectric? States, UK etc.?

The 3200+ is a good CPU, as Vako explained their rating system was some what a comparison to Intel speeds.

The 3200+ is one of the lowest spec'd Athlon 64 but it is an excellent deal at the moment. It will overclock well, i have mine at 2.8GHz most of the time which makes it very fast. I wouldn't recommend getting anything higher in the single core range because you will be able to overclock it well with a decent motherboard. Going dual-core is worth it if you can afford it.

The Intel Core 2 Duo is going to be expensive at launch plus with bugs and things still in the works I don't think it is going to be a viable platform until Christmas.

If you are still interested in Intel for Dual Core the 2.66GHz Pentium D is a very good CPU with massive amounts of overclocking, Tom's Hardware managed to get it up to 4.1GHz on some decent air cooling.

AMDs dual core offering is much more expensive with the 3800+ X2 being the cheapest, its only really an option if you have the money and want to only look at AMD.

You've mentioned about looking at bundles, be careful with what motherboard you get. I think the motherboard is one of thing items you really need to be careful picking as its the worst to change/replace, and its going to determin the stability and features of your computer.

On a finally note, don't be tempted to go with Socket 939 stock, there are some deals out there but AM2 isn't as expensive as people think with 3200+ in both sockets being nearly the same price. DDR2 is worthing going with simply because it will hopefully go in your next computer if you upgrade say the motherboard and CPU. DDR3 isn't tabled until '08.

  11. The trick to using a jammers is to not stay with it. You put it down turn it on and just walk away.

But they its not going to follow my target and people are probably going to work through it without noticing because it probably doesn't have a very good range.
