  1. so a virus is a normal application. they are written in notepad. and they run like any other program. im assuming they would be a executable file then? and i know some virus's are in advertising space, but i know of a site that was listed as a attack site. i guess the coding was changed (i would assume) , so what happens to a site that does something like that, gets reported as a attack site and is dangerous? is there coding changed somehow? or the server hosting it have a virus? computers crash from virus's, what do most of those do, corrupt OS files than? what do they do to corrupt them? so a program can be auto ran if it can be a single executable how is that set up to auto run? so most arent done through command prompt, they are simply a application like anyother, programmed to target specific things within the OS, rather than using the command prompt to execute commands. makes sense, as a aspp would have more possibility's so what kind of programs are virus's saved as? .exe? and how do you program them, notepad is basic script but does the language have a name so i can look it up and learn it? i apreciate your time and i thank you! as a end user getting a virus or protecting against them i am knowledgable, but as far as being on the other end i am not really aware of how it works, and would love to understand it more, and that would probably help me security to.... although i run linux, it will help for a IT job.
  2. i am wanting some info on computer Virus's, trojans, spyware, and adware. how to create them what you create them in how they are uploaded to sites how they are downloaded what they are made to do how many parts there are to them How to create them what do you have to do to create a virus, what do you make them to target, how do you have them execute/run? What to create them in what program to create them in, and do you create them in a programming language, do you have them run through the command prompt as a .exe? how they are uploaded to a site how do virus's get onto websites and what kind of websites are vulnurable to virus's? how are they downloaded? do you have to click on something that is infected to have the virus download, or can they automatically download if a site is infected? What are they made to do lots of kinds of them, but what is the main function, to damage the OS or to bogg a system down with proccess's? how many parts are there to a virus? is it one single program or do you have a program that is executed by a .exe also attached to the program automatically upon download? basically this is purely informative. i am wondering about them and when i run a google search i get things like "how to make a fake virus that will shut your computer down!" when all they do is use the run program to run the shutdown command and give it a internet explorer icon so there friend will click on it. i also know one can put in notepad Format C: and save it as a .exe and have it be run on a computer, which is why i wonder if most virus's are targeted at the OS through the command prompt. anyway, would love to learn more about them! im a newb to virus creaton so anything beyond what i aked that is informative will be great. THANKS!
  3. i think they should drop MS and move to OS. i use open source and so i know there is a cheaper and just as good way to do it on open source software. knowing that, i dont want to pay for umpteen billion licenses for MS. authors note - i have nothing against MS. i just prefer linux as a better tool for me. live long and.....may the force be with you!
  4. ok, i think i am going to just go with a desktop then. i always have it on and running and constantly use it. i may pick up a laptop later on but wont invest tons of money into one. i guess technology hasnt increased so much yet that mobility is worth it! ;-]
  5. if you have not tried to reformat it on linux yet give it ago, on ubuntu it is system-administration-disk utility (or something similiar) you should be able to view the usb stick. then you should have a choice to reformat it. i find it easier to do in linux then in windows. even if it doesnt come up when you put it in, you should get it on the menu.
  6. Hey there all! so i am running linux, i am a fan of open source and am getting into programming. so linux is a good route. i am not huge huge into gaming, (it would be fun) other than some star wars games i would like to be able to play. so i am not really in need of windows. so a OSOS (open source OS) is what i will run. the main reason i was going to have a desktop was for gaming i was going to do in windows. (again, not a neccesity.) i was going to build a rig myself with some really good hardware. but i like the mobility of a laptop. so i was thinking, and it would be cool to build my own computer still, and i think that the desktop hardware is more compatible with Open Source. im not 100% on that or anything, but that seems to be what i have found. especiallywith wireless cards open source can be killer. so i think most all hardware would be compatible with a desktop i built. BUT i if i do not need killer benchmarks with my hardware (in ex. gaming) than i cant see much of a point with running a desktop where i can select all my parts and easily upgrade. and i dont need amazing performance so most laptops would work. so a laptop would seem fine, but again, not much choice in hardware that is compatible or not, also i dont want to suffer from no sound/wifi. but mobility would be amazing since i would be doing programming, to do that anywhere would be nice. the other thing i dont want to do is pay for windows and then blast it. blasting it i dont have a problem with, but i dont want to pay for it if thats all im going to do. and then a possibility of it not working properly. so im kind of in a delema because i dont know that i want to be confined to the laptops with linux pre installed either. so do i stick with a desktop i can build, and upgrade, and have more compatibility with but be confined to one place, or do i go with a laptop and possibly hit bumps with drivers not interfacing and rebuying a new laptop when mine is outdated and paying of a OS that i wont use, but be able to have mobility? opinions?
  7. i heard if you look you can find dealers selling computers with linux pre installed and all. i was wondering if thats what that was or did you just add the sticker to it? also, where did you get the sticker, i see you have one on your apple computer to.
  8. i think my OS changed from last time ;) im starting to get into programming so i switched to linux again... i actually have two HD's. one with linux and one with XP.
  9. Hey all, so on itunes its really easy to subscribe to the podcast. i also really like rythmbox. im just not sure how to subscribe to a podcast on it. any help is much appreciated!!! Thanks Kolton Kuhns
  10. as any hacker should do, download linux. its a good OS for hackers. and the mindset. but just incase anyone wants to try it before they go ahead and permanently delete windows off there computer, wubi is a good installer to run both. dual boot option. so if you want to become a hacker, take a stab at linux to see if you like it or that its compatible: http://wubi-installer.org/ also i like this tutorial: http://catb.org/esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html
  11. cool. thank you guys!! i wasnt sure so that helped!
  12. yeah its installing now, i changed that and got it working. it is a balancing act. basically though im going to need to wait to build my computer before i get more ram. might as well have patience and put the money to what i want than to something that will hold me over.
  13. my aunt who has a macbook pro puts a book under the end of it for cooling. it allows airflow, and she likes the keyboard tilt. but yes i guess that is the other problem, is airflow, thanks for reminding me. and who cares if the other employees hate macs, they probably arent as computer savvy. its a tool like any OS.
  14. i got it to boot into ubuntu but it says unable to allocate lock memory. and your making fine sense. aslo i may try that other program if this one doesnt work. EDIT: i ran it again to try to bring up the error, and it did, so i whent to the details section and it said the host's memory is low. so im guessing i need to keep more ram here..... or better yet, buy more ram. i just really dont want to invest 30 dollars to this machine.
  15. by that you mean? i am just going into the file system and selecting the iso file instead of the D; drive correct? or am i putting the iso file on a disc or do i burn the iso image to a disc to make it bootable and continue to select D; drive?
  16. ok, i will downlaod the linux iso images i want, those are the main ones that i wanted anyway, vista and 7 would just be fun, ill find those to im sure ;) thank you a ton for your help, i really appreciate it, it looks like you help many people on here from a glance of some of the threads i have seen. thats awesome and it is much appreciated!
  17. if i have this correct i have to have an iso image for the OS in order for the virtual machine to run it. basically extracting the contents. and the local drive D; which is the DVD drive i just change that to the location of the iso image? so besides linux, i can grab those, where do i get a vista and 7 iso image?
  18. honestly, if work is going to be picking up 80% or so of the cost, i would go with a mac. there nice as far as hardware goes, metal cases. good for transport. good battery. if you were footing the bill, then i would not suggest a mac, as they are expensive pieces of equipment, and in my opinion not worth the cost. but they are nice! so if the company will be paying for most of it though, then i would pick it up, if cost is covered on there end, then you are getting a nice computer that is good for transport and is sturdy. like i listed above they are what your looking for. so if your paying for it all, then i suggest an HP envy like already suggested. HP's are nice computers. never had a problem with them. BUT, if the company will pay most of it, grab a mac! ;) just my two republic credits.
  19. thank you, i did that and it installed. so now i have come to another question. basically i try to create a new VM. i follow the instructions. when i go to enter the brand new VM it asks for a bootable drive or something, the only one listed is D drive, and then when i try to run it, it comes up black with words and reads something along the lines of no boot able media or something. tried to check the PDF already.
  20. i was trying to install virtual box on my windows XP 32-bit system with service pack 3 and as the installation was just about finished, a warning came up saying this that the software had not passed the windows logo testing and that it may impair or destabilize the correct operation of my system. im wondering is this standard and simply because it will be running a virtual version of another OS or did something go wrong with my setup?
  21. Hi all, i have a quick question: do most company's hire a IT guy, or employ a IT company? i ask because i cant imagine all company's knowing how to hire a proper IT. so i would assume that they would employ a IT company. my dad has a small business, and he hired a guy with his own business to set up his network. but of course a small company more than likely wont be hiring a IT full time. thanks!
  22. mines nothing to special, XP on a upgraded dell. once i get my car i build a computer. desktop by astromech_kuhns, on Flickr setup: 0812001542(2) by astromech_kuhns, on Flickr
  23. should we start a very realistic, thread to compare not bash OS's? sorry to kind of bring this back up but it was suggested in the first page. it would be nice to compare it on three levels, community/support, software, hardware. i think a good thread, would be a good idea just to compare the OS's. like you said tools is what they are, but it would be a nice project for the community to contribute to. so that people can compare them to make there choice. let me know what you guys think.
  24. Hey all, astromech_kuhns here. saw hak5 a while ago and forgot to keep coming back, stumbled back upon it again last night. love the show. i have ran both linux and windows recently, and have taken a computer class at my school on macs, plus have family with macs that i help so i am experienced with each. im 16 and looking into going into the IT field when im a bit older. i love computers. after i get my car im going to build myself a gaming rig. do small amounts of networking at my house and dads office to. i am currently reading CompTIA A+ its a book that is for passing the ComTIA exams, it goes over everything computers. its a good book so far and am learning a lot. so just wanted to say hi!
