Hey all, last week I thought that maybe I could get a Realtek audio management program for Linux like the one they distribute for Windows. I went to their site, saw a Linux driver, and thought there might be one in the package. So, I downloaded it and ran the install file as instructed. However, my audio quit working and hasn't worked since. I think there were some errors in compiling the code or something.
I've tried reinstalling alsa from my package manager as well as from source, but when I go to the sound configuration I don't see any hardware listed. Does anyone know how I should go about fixing this? I really don't want to reinstall Ubuntu, but I will if there is no other way.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hey, any one use OCR? I'm looking for a free OCR program for Linux, Windows, or be a web application. It needs to be able to read multi-page PDF files. I would like it if it would preserve graphics(diagrams/illustrations) in the document as images. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know of any usb 3.0 addon cards that are compatible with Ubuntu? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'll have to look into that.
iptables would be a solution.
Could you explain iptables, or point me to an explanation?

My internet goes through a series of routers and I would have to set it up on all of them. Could I do something like reverse port forwarding where my computer is looking to see if someone is trying to connect to a different ip and forward the connection to itself?
psudocode example:
redirect -from 20.000.000.10:22 -to localhost:22

I was trying to set up ssh so I can access my computer from wherever I want. The problem is my computer isn't assigned a public ip. Can bounce the connection off a remote computer somehow? Is ssh IPv6 compatible so I can us Teredo?

ComboFix finds running rootkits and viruses, so it would not work in a live cd environment.

Yes, I know I can change settings or disable McAfee, but I would have to do that with each and every computer I work on. Whereas, if I use some sort of modified file I can use that file on any computer regardless of what AV the computer is running. It should also protect ComboFix from viruses. There are several that stop ComboFix from running.

As most of you know McAfee and ComboFix aren't exactly the best of friends. I use ComboFix a lot as a computer technician and most of our customers' computers are running McAfee. I am looking for a way to disguise ComboFix so it doesn't get deleted the instant I plug in my flash drive.

Since the webserver you are running is from home, all you have to do is open a forwarding port 80 on your router at home. When you are outside all you need to know is your router public ip address, or could you use dyndns.com.
I have port 80 opened on my home router. When I put in my public ip address it comes up with the Mikro Tik router that is in the business that provides our internet service.

Hello, I am trying to host a website from home. The problem is, there are several routers between me and the web. I don't have the passwords to all the routers either. I've been able to host the site locally with apache, but I would like to be able to access it from elsewhere.

I know this forum is kind of dead, but I was wondering if anyone ever got this to work on a non-admin account.

Hey, I was wondering if someone had a good limited to admin escalation method for XP that could be made into an exe or bat file. This would be a great addition to the usb switchblade/hak saw.

I've been looking into more RAM and maybe a quad-core processor down the line. I have a dual core so I think RAM is my main problem. I've only tried running one VM at a time.
Could anyone help with the question about mounting the vdi files as drives on the host. WinMount will do it, but I was looking for something free.

How much RAM does your computer have? You can specify how much RAM a VM can use in the VMs settings.
Accessing virtual disks without a VM: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=4748
My computer has 2GB of RAM shared with the integrated video card. I haven't really messed with the RAM settings on the VMs, and I can do that, but I would like to have a way to create some sort of virtual RAM.

Hello I have Virtual Box running on an XP host and have a couple questions.
1) My VMs run slow, and I was wondering if there is any way to create virtual RAM for use with Virtual Box.
2) I hate starting a VM just to access a couple files, so I was wondering if there is a free, easy to use tool out there for mounting VDI files on XP.

but isn't there some way to make a boot managing disk, like a grub loader or something, that will use the file system on the hard drive

The 40 GB was in the closet because I had been using it to run Windows 7 beta on my main PC, but I took it out to free up an IDE port. This is the only hard drive in the machine I am trying to set up as a server. The motherboard is so old that it has two simm slots in it.
When I referred to Ubuntu seeing the space I was talking about during the installation process.
-
jumper is set to master. When I do an auto configure from the bios it shows a hard drive, but all the values are 0.
Ubuntu saw all 40 GB of space so I don't think anything is broken.
-
yes, but the motherboard doesn't recognize any drives when I try to auto configure the hard drives

Hi
I recently decided I wanted to try setting up a home linux server using an old pc that has been sitting around forever. So, I hooked it up. the hard drive was making horrible sounds so I knew it was bad. Luckily I had a 40GB drive in my closet. I stuck it in the machine and installed Ubuntu Server on it, but it wont boot because the motherboard is so old it wont recognize my 40 GB.
I was wondering if there is any way I could write a floppy or CD that would boot the file system on the hard drive.

Make sure the computer connected using the cross over cable is set to get it's IP address from DHCP and dosn;t have it set statically.
You'll also need to bridge the two network adapters on the computer that is connected to both the wireless and the other computer.
Thank you, I just figured out how to do the bridging.

Hi, I'm sorry if this is common knowledge to other people. I am trying to set up a server, but there aren't enough outlets close to our router. It is a wireless router, and I have a computer in the next room connected through wifi. I have a crossover cable and have tried using that to share internet, but my other computer keeps giving me a message saying it has to have the same IP our router has. I was kind of wondering if I could build some sort of wireless hub with a network jack on it. Is there a cheep way of solving this problem. I would rather not buy another wireless card.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10. It is completely up to date. Is there a repair option on the boot CD like on Windows?
