  1. Hi, will a cluster help me? If it will could someone point me toward information on how to cluster Windows 7? My situation is described below.

The computer on my desk at work is an old Intel machine running on a dual core P4 with 2GB of RAM. It is running Windows 7. I haven't run into any problems with it, except the occasional CPU hogging program that slows everything down. My boss encourages tinkering and we have plenty of old parts laying around that I should be able to scrap together another machine or two to cluster with it.

  2. For most imaging software they will do a bit for bit copy so the unused space on the drive will be put into the image. If you are using a hard disk then you could create a big file filled with 0's and then delete it. Otherwise your unused space will contain random data from old deleted files which while will compress won't compress as well as a big block of consistent data (dd is a very good tool for creating these files).

If you are using SSDs then I wouldn't recommend this as they have a limited number of writes and don't store unused space in the same way.

Thanks for the tip, I think I remember a program that wipes the free space. No, I don't use SSDs. They are way out of my price range.

  3. Very. For one thing, there's no key for it on a standard QWERTY keyboard. And whenever I try to write it I feel like a child learning to write for the first time... and it always looks weird.

    how is τ(tau) any better?

  4. Partitions where never meant to be:

    • expanded
    • reduced
    • other wise re-sized
    • moved

Always keep a backup available when doing any of these things.

Whether or not they were meant to be, it is nice to be able to. Gparted is the best one I have ever used. I have never backed up data before resizing partitions with it(never really had anything important enough to) and have never lost any data in moving or resizing a partition. The program will usually not complete the change if it detects that data will be lost or corrupted.

  5. Thanks, I like the web interface on this one. I am not sure if it allows for a Windows server to backup though. Their website only mentions PCs.

Does anyone have experience using the free crashplan.com? It looks like a pretty straight forward program and easy to use. I think you can even do free offsite backup to one of your own computers. Has anyone here tried it or have an opinion on it?

    Thanks,

    Chris

Windows Server shouldn't be any different than backing up XP. Files are files, all you need is a program to copy them to wherever you want your backup.

  6. I would do that, but my laptop has a 500GB HDD and that is the biggest one I have. I was hoping for a program that would create and compress the image at the same time. If this is not possible, what is the best archiving program for Linux?

  7. Hi, I have been real busy the last couple days installing and configuring software on my new laptop, and I want to make a backup as soon as I have everything the way I want it. I want to backup the entire Windows partition and possibly the whole HDD(recovery partition included). I am looking for the best free compression software out there for compressing multiple files and file types into the smallest size possible. I am not really worried about compression time. I plan on connecting the HDD to my desktop for the backup. My desktop is running Ubuntu, so it would be nice if it is Linux software.

  8. They dont run as fast as a GPU on a graphics card.

    But check out pico cards.

It was the type of stuff used before GPU got big.

    http://www.picocomputing.com/e_series.html

Could something like those be made with GPUs? I was hoping for something more like a second CPU slot to turn the average motherboard into a multi-processor board via a standard PCI slot or a CUDA card that is designed just for CUDA use making it cheaper by eliminating unnecessary components used on a graphics card. Would a card like that need its own RAM?

  9. Would it be possible to make a PCI card that has several CPUs/GPUs on it to make a super computer? It couldn't be that hard to make one with GPUs seeing as there is already CUDA out there, but would it be possible to put say two AM2+ sockets on a board and use some of them since they have recently been replaced by the AM3 and should be dropping in price(acrually it might be cheaper and better quality if we use AM3s, there is no way that I know of to use Intel processors and keep it cool, not to mention the cost)?

If it is possible, would any one be interested in working on the project?

  10. 11. Don't leave the power cord plugged into your laptop when not charging it. (It can easily be bumped and break the power jack in the computer.)

    12. Don't set your laptop on a soft surface that it will sink into wile it is on.(suffocated laptops overheat)

    13. Don't set your laptop on the floor. (People and pets tend to step on them and damage the screen and other components.)

    14. Treat it like it costs hundreds or thousands of dollars because they do.

  11. Don't you hate it when you pull up the boot menu, select CD-ROM, turn around to do something else, and come back to find you missed the Windows CD's stupid boot prompt. I am constantly using Windows CDs to repair and reinstall Windows on customer machines. How hard would it be to edit the file that prompts for you to hit a key so it comes up with an option screen like a Linux live CD and doesn't do anything on its own? Could I put the CD files on a USB drive and use GRUB some how?

Some help/insight as to how the boot process works on a Windows CD would be helpful.

  12. I mainly want to make an anti-virus distro. I like Kaspersky's rescue, but sometimes the distro it is built on has issues with certain machines. I would like to build my own distro to run it, possibly something more light weight to see if I can reduce scan times. There are also some other Linux based anti-virus disks out there, and I wanted to combine them in a way that I wouldn't have to reboot between using the different software.

How easy do you think it would be to just brows the file system and find the necessary files?

  13. Hello, I am looking for a way to collect programs from Linux live CDs. I would then put the software on my own live CD distro. Is there a program I can run that will find all the files for a specific program and bundle them into an rpm or similar package?
